You’re kept on speed dial by countless celebs – do you have a favourite famous client?

“Ha! That would be like choosing between my dogs! We have so many long-standing and really wonderful celebrity friends who love our brand; a few are Cat Deeley, Davina McCall, Amanda Holden and Lisa Snowdon. Of course, there’s also the lovely Kelly Hoppen, Vanessa Williams, Tess Daly, Claudia Winkleman and Trinny Woodall! They are all fabulous, embracing women, so I couldn’t possibly choose.”

You’re a style icon for so many – but who’s your denim icon?

“There are lots but women who wear or have worn denim never stop inspiring me. Kate Moss, Marilyn Monroe, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Sienna Miller, Princess Diana – I could go on all day!”

Cigarette, bootleg, skinnies – what is your go-to jean shape and why?

“That’s a tricky one. I love anything cropped as I am short. If it isn’t cropped, I roll it, and actually if it is already cropped, I probably have to roll again! I also love flares because I can hide a good, stacked heel underneath and give myself six extra inches in height. Skinny jeans are great, too as I can tuck them into boots, wear with a loafer or ballet flat, and then add a heel for the evening. The endless versatility and modernity of jeans excites me, as they can take you anywhere and always feel fresh.”

For us, shopping for jeans can be a fashion minefield. What’s the secret to finding your perfect pair?

“My biggest tip is to know your body shape and be honest about it. Be open to highlighting your best asset. What suits your friend will not necessarily suit you. At Donna Ida, we do a lot of online styling and chatting to customers. We WhatsApp them videos and FaceTime them. That one-to-one and getting to the bottom of what will work for someone is so satisfying.”

So when it comes to body shape, what should we consider?

“The biggest thing for jeans is knowing where your length is. Do you have a long or short body? Do you have long or short legs? Or are you average all over? Just knowing this will narrow down choices very quickly. For example, if you have a long torso, look for a high waisted style which will balance out your proportions. Similarly, if you have a shorter body and longer legs, look for a style that is mid rise and focus on the leg length. If your proportions are more or less balanced, you will be able to wear a range of leg lengths and rise heights. Looking at your proportions will really help you to decide what shapes suit your best, and more importantly what you are comfortable in and fills you with confidence.”

Your jeans are beautiful but out of many people’s price-range.  Is it ever possible to find a flattering pair of cheap and cheerful jeans? 

“Check out our Donna Ida end of season sale! It is also worth looking on Vinted, as there are a lot of good pieces on there and I think re-selling and re-sharing things is important. I read recently that hoarding works against the law of use, and I really believe in that! If you don’t need something or aren’t using it, either sell it or give it away to keep the energy flowing.”

What would you say is the ultimate jeans faux pas?

“I like to think everyone can express themselves in whatever way they want, but if I had to say one thing, it would probably be squeezing into something that is way too small. Something that I used to be very guilty of myself!”

Your jeans are all about creating body confidence. What makes you feel great?

“I like relaxed elegance, so keep my wardrobe streamlined. A few well-fitting things that always feel special, aren’t difficult to wear and make me feel comfortable. I am much more at home in a well fitted bodysuit and jeans than in a dress or something with lots of ruffles. I don’t like to have to spend a lot of time thinking about my outfit as there are so many other important decisions to make during the day. I like getting dressed to be stress free.”

With London Fashion Week in the bag – what Spring/Summer trends should be on our radar?

“I loved the amount of denim and leather on the catwalk, blazers and quite a few bursts of bright acid shades. A blazer and jeans are always a timeless look for me and I cannot wait to see what goes down the runway in Milan and Paris. Donna Ida has a very European feel to it and I love the way the French and Italian women dress. So stylish!”

And finally, as the undisputed Jean Queen, can you please settle the age-old argument: is wearing double denim ever a good idea?

“Always! I personally prefer it if the denims are a similar wash level though. Then I think it looks super punchy and slick. I love it!”

But it’s not just as a solo artist that Nik has enjoyed global success – he’s also written and produced best-selling songs for Elton John, Gary Barlow, Lulu, and many more. He even wrote the Chesney Hawkes smash The One And Only, which spent five weeks at number one and cracked the top 10 in the USA. 

All that as well as being the founder of his own record label Shorthouse Records, it’s fair to say that Nik has plenty to talk about – and that’s exactly what he’s doing on his intimate theatre tour, Musings & Lyrics. Let’s find out more, shall we?

Nik, tell us about your tour.

“I’ve loved the solo shows I’ve done so far. On until 23 November, it’s giving me a chance to share songs, stories and have a Q&A session with the audience.”

So what’s the best question you’ve been asked ?

“A few years ago someone said, ‘Nik, can you sing Fantastic Day for us?’ I had to break the news that I wasn’t Nick Heyward, and that they’d booked tickets for the wrong show!”

Anything else?

“I get asked a lot about Live Aid, which was unlike anything else I’ve ever done. It was an incredible experience, and I feel very privileged to have been part of it. When you realise just how many people were involved behind the scenes in making that event happen, it’s amazing.”

Take us back to your time in the Mid-Eighties

“My feet didn’t touch the ground for about two years. It was like my life was on rails and I couldn’t get off the train.”

But by the end of the Eighties you quit performing. Why?

“I’d become disillusioned with being a performer, so took a step back to write and produce for other artists. Some were written on my own; some in collaboration with others; some for established artists, some for hopeful idiots; some for major label projects; some just for the hell of it!”

Did you have a process when writing them?

“I used to wake up in the middle of the night with great ideas for a song and have to write them down. Or they’d come to me when I was driving the car, or out on a walk. I’d start whistling a tune, and it would grow from there. But the really successful songs came to me relatively quickly. They weren’t difficult to write, and just sort of happened – that’s often the way.”

What’s different when you’re not writing your own songs?

“It’s a very different process. You may have very strong views about something, either spiritually or politically, which would feel right for you to sing. You can’t do that for others – it has to be more generic. Harmonically I used to go off all over the place, but you can’t really do that when you are writing for others, either. You have to operate within certain parameters.”

And that’s what took you back to singing again?

“Operating within those parameters became the thing that frustrated me the most. I realised I couldn’t really go for it and write some of the songs I wanted to because no-one else was going to sing them, so I decided I was just going to have to sing them myself!”

So are you still singing now?

“I still do gigs, which I enjoy, but don’t have the same hunger and drive to be constantly creating new material that I had in my 20s. There will be another album at some point, though. At the moment I’m just not sure what it will be, and when. You always have to think that your best-ever album is still to come – there’s no point in doing this otherwise.”

Back to the show and the question we all want to know: will you be giving us a definitive answer to the meaning of your1984 hit The Riddle and reveal once and for all what it was all about?

“Yes – I’ve developed a new way of explaining it, and the process I went through when I was creating it. No spoilers, though – you’ll have to come to one of the shows or buy my book to find out.”

After disbanding in 1986, Stewart was far from done, composing soundtracks for blockbusters and with subsequent near-four decades at the forefront of contemporary music. We sat down for a chat to find out about his incredible career.

How did you end up where you are today?

“Music’s always been in my blood: my dad was a jazz aficionado, and my brothers Miles and Ian pretty much brought the English New Wave invasion to America. They started IRS Records, which gave us The Bangles, The Go-Go’s and REM. Sadly we lost Ian to melanoma in 2006. I miss him every day.”

Where did you come in to all this?

“I was 12 and playing drums in a school band. I noticed a girl, Janet Roberts, grooving to my beat – to me she was a Goddess and out of my reach. But she was dancing to my groove! I was playing in the band and she was dancing and I couldn’t believe I was causing her to move. It was an epiphany. I was the runt of the litter but banging on the drums turned me into an 800lb silverback, swinging through the trees.”

What happened next?

“I was 15 and playing drums during a school Christmas service at Wells Cathedral. I’ll never forget my music teacher pointing his finger at me to begin. For a moment, I was leading this magnificent artistic enterprise that I’d just been absorbing so profoundly. I was now the boss of it – and that told me there was a higher purpose in music, higher even than 15-year-old girls called Janet.”

Moving on to The Police: do you really think you where conquering the world?

“It’s a bunch of statistics. The interesting thing for me about that era is the world of fame and what that looks like. You’re not yourself: life’s guardrails are removed and that’s why so many come a cropper because they’re not limited by the normal rules of social intercourse.”

But what about your audience’s response?

“The phenomenon itself is incredible. It’s such good fun. You do something and get an immediate response. You bang something, and 80,000 people cheer. It was everything we dreamed of, and it was wonderful to be the centre of that attention. But there’s a point where there’s such a thing as too much love and adoration, and that becomes oppressive.”

So how did you cope?

“Most of the time we were fine; we could handle it because we were young, egotistical and confident. We were in our late 20s by that time, so we’d lived some experiences. For the next eight years that was all we knew. We were riding that rocket ship.”

We’ve read recordings with The Police had ‘become hell’ – is that true?

“It was, so I went off to record a film score for Francis Coppola. I was struck by the relief and joy of that music. The lack of judgment and tension was incredible. To just be making music myself was a pleasure. Francis would come and say: ‘Great, great, great.’ It was heaven to learn there was a world outside of The Police.”

So composing became your lifeline?

“The Police was like a Prada suit made out of razor blades. Outside of the band I was an employee. I worked for hire in a studio creating music for money. Two different things. Guess which one made me happier?”

You’re now travelling the world with your Have I Said Too Much? tour. What can we expect?

“Simply put it’s me, in conversation, talking about my career from the early days until today. Because it’s been quite a ride during my 72 years on Planet Earth.”

Richard, what was your career before you went on Britain’s Got Talent?

“I was serving full-time in the British Army as a Bandsman with the Household Cavalry. I’d been in the Army for several years, and most of my role revolved around performing music for ceremonial duties, state occasions, and concerts. It was a wonderful career in itself, with a strong sense of purpose and tradition. I loved the huge amount of travel it gave me and the excitement of every day being different.”

How did magic come into the equation?

“I began learning magic when I first joined the Army to help fill some of the down times while travelling. While I loved performing music, I found that magic gave me another way to connect with people on a more personal level. In the Army, I would often perform little tricks for friends and colleagues, and I soon realised it was more than just a hobby – it was something that brought joy to others and gave me a creative outlet.”

So what made you want to apply for Britain’s Got Talent?

“Friends and family had been encouraging me for years to audition, but I always hesitated because I wasn’t sure if I was ready. Eventually, I thought: ‘why not’? The show is an incredible platform for performers, and I wanted to test myself on the biggest stage in the country. It was also a chance to represent the Army in a different way, and show a side of myself that people might not expect.”

Had you left the Army by then?

“No, I was still serving while competing and I continued part time for another six years. My mindset at the time was very much ‘just enjoy the ride.’ If I hadn’t gone all the way through to win, I would have simply gone back to my Army duties; proud that I’d given it a go. Winning was never the expectation: just the dream. I loved my Army role which is why I didn’t want to leave, despite being super-busy juggling magic shows with duties.”

What did it feel like to win?

“It was surreal. Honestly, it didn’t sink in for a while. Standing there on that stage, hearing my name called out as the winner; I’ll never forget that moment. It was overwhelming pride and gratitude all rolled into one – not just for myself, but for everyone who supported me along the way.”

Where did it all go from there?

“After winning, opportunities started coming in fast:  tours, TV work, corporate events, theatre shows – the lot. I eventually made the decision to step away from full-time service in 2022 ,so I could give 100% to magic. It wasn’t easy to leave behind my Army family, but the transition felt natural because performing had become my calling.”

What are you doing now?

“I tour around the UK with my own live shows and also perform internationally. My act combines sleight of hand, mind-reading, and storytelling; often with a nod to my military background. I perform in theatres, festivals, and private events and host lots of corporate events, so no two weeks look the same, which I love.”

How does it feel now you’re the one deciding what you do –and not an employee?

“Liberating. I get to follow my passion and shape my career on my own terms. Of course, it also means the responsibility is entirely mine, but that’s part of the excitement.”

What’s the best thing about being your own boss?

“The freedom to be creative. If I want to try out a new idea, develop a new show, or take my work in a different direction, I don’t have to ask anyone’s permission. That independence is incredibly rewarding.”

Any downside?

“The uncertainty. In the Army everything is structured and secure: you know your schedule, your pay, your role. As a self-employed performer, there are ups and downs, busy periods and quiet ones. It can be nerve-wracking, but I’ve learned to embrace the unpredictability.”

Finally, what advice would you give to anyone considering becoming their own boss?

“Go for it – but plan carefully. Follow your passion, but also be realistic about the challenges. Build a support network, stay disciplined, and don’t be afraid of failure. Most importantly, believe in yourself, because if you don’t, no one else will.”

She was the youngest Brit in nearly a century to play in the main draw at Wimbledon, but at the age of just 21, Annabel made the bold decision to step away from professional tennis to seek new challenges, which has taken her from the jungles of Sri Lanka and the Treasure Hunt helicopter to the Strictly Come Dancing studio and now her place in the Wimbledon commentary box. Now she’s lifting the lid on it all in a new touring show, Annabel Croft: From Tennis Balls to Glitter Balls. We sat down for a chat with the tennis legend to find out more

Annabel, tell us about your tour. What’s it all about?

I’m really excited! It’s running from 25 September to 23 November and is all about sharing my experiences from the world of tennis, broadcasting and dancing on Strictly.”

How did your career begin?

“When I was 11, a schoolteacher asked me to write an essay called ‘What I Would Like To Do’. I said I wanted to be able to play tennis, win Wimbledon, make journeys all around the world, and dance on stage! I did play tennis at Wimbledon and win the Open Girls’ tournament. I did travel the world playing in many other tournaments. And many years later I also got to dance on one of the biggest stages of all, Strictly!”

So, your dreams really did come true?

“Yes! Not everyone is lucky enough to be able to say that, so I hope that 11-year-old Annabel would look at me now and think I’ve not done too badly!”

What else do you think contributed to your success?

“When opportunities arise, I’ve always been the sort of person to walk through the door and at the very least look at what’s involved. I’ve never been afraid of putting myself in places where I could end up falling flat on my face – which believe me has happened on more than one occasion! But that shouldn’t ever discourage you. We should never be afraid to give things a try.”

Do you ever have any regrets about turning your back on tennis at such a young age?

“No. I’ve never fallen out of love with the game – and still plays most weeks – but I couldn’t come to terms with living out of a suitcase, dealing with agents, managers, solicitors and sponsors, and giving up anything resembling a conventional social life.”

Going back to Strictly. Many questioned you signing up just a few months after the death of your husband, Mel, from cancer. How did you cope?

“I hadn’t appreciated just how good things like dancing or yoga are for people dealing with grief. Having briefly practised ballet when I was young, the show took me full circle to those early years when I’d be in my room putting on Tchaikovsky or Prokofiev and dreaming of doing Romeo and Juliet. I loved the process on Strictly of learning all the different dances, and it felt as if my tight, stiff body was unravelling like a giant ball of string. The movement and fluidity of the music and routines helped me to free up and release the tension.”

What about extra support from your colleagues?

“It’s a close and tight-knit community on the tennis media circuit, and I felt very, very supported. They were brilliant. I felt a lot of love and support at that time, and I’m so thankful. To go back into commentary straight after Mel’s death at the French Open and be able to talk about the world I knew helped to distract me from the way my life had been turned upside down.”

So, what are your plans when it comes to your career?

“I’m not looking too far ahead right now for another challenge, other than trying to enjoy and appreciate life’s simpler pleasures like taking regular walks, and connecting with nature. I’m focusing much more about being in the moment, and enjoying what I’m doing now. It’s something that the top sports people are trained to do, and is one of tennis legend Billie Jean King’s most famous lines: ‘be present’.”

What was the best part of Love Island? 

Besides getting paid to sit in a lovely villa with 40 degree heat and the girls walking around in bikinis? I met some really great people there. I’m still in contact with a lot of the lads, like Jordan, Michael, Danny and Chris. They’re all good mates of mine now.

I get along really well with Joe Garratt from the season I was on, funnily enough. We weren’t actually in the villa together but we’re good mates now. My favourite part was making pals like that and sitting in the sun.

Was it easy to keep up your exercise regime while in the villa? Or did you have to adapt?

I actually trained twice a day in there. I don’t think they showed any of it to be honest, but I was doing weights in the gym in the corner and I ran across the garden. One day Ovie ran across the garden with me, and another day Anton joined me, so it was all good fun.

They feed you really well and all I did was train and drink water between the drama. So funnily enough, I left in really good shape.

Any behind-the-scenes secrets you can tell us about being in the villa? 

People tend to think that it’s all staged and what’s happening is produced, but it’s actually not. Everything and every word an Islander says comes out of their own mouth, it’s their own autonomy to say what they want.

Obviously, the producers have to make a show so they have to encourage people to have conversations. But if you mess up and say something wrong? That’s on you. It’s far more real than people think it is. At the end of the day, they only have eight weeks to produce the most-watched show in the UK.

Another thing people don’t realise is that there’s cameras everywhere. Even in the toilets, there’s a camera in your face when you’re doing your business. I think the reason behind that is in case a couple starts having sex somewhere or an argument takes place and the team need to capture that.

Did you get any secret coded messages slipped under your door by producers to encourage you then?

They actually tried to make me kiss Amber the second night I was in there. They said: “Greg would you maybe think about kissing her?” And I told them no, I don’t want to I’m not ready. They took it really well and backed off.  

Did you get much mental support after leaving the show?

ITV are very good in that they have a full 14-month programme that you have to do on the way out talking to therapists and psychologists. Even before you go in you have to be signed off after meeting a psychologist. They do everything they can do to help you, but it’s on you at the end of the day.

I received a lot of negativity after the show, but that was because I didn’t follow the standard path of asking the girl to be my partner, move to London, take all the brand deals. I had to go home for training, I was going to the Olympics the next year.

Being a Love Island winner wasn’t part of my plan, and I got eaten alive on social media. I was called a money-grabber, and in reality, I was going home to work a full-time job that pays below minimum wage for the chance to represent my country and follow my dream.

Are there any lessons you learned in the Villa that have stuck with you? 

I was happy with the way I carried myself in there and how I respected people. I do regret how it all came crashing down afterwards.

Amber, the girl I won the show with, could have dealt with a lot of it privately but it all got blown out of proportion and I wish it was handled better. She apologised first and I said it’s fine, these things happen even though it had a massive impact on my public image but I wasn’t trying to be that person at the time. So the lesson to take away is to deal with things privately. But Love Island is the most-watched TV show in the UK so that’s a struggle.

You started off as a 15-a-side rugby player and moved to Sevens after your injury at Munster. How do the two sports compare physically?

At the top levels of traditional rugby and Sevens they’re essentially a different sport. The demand on your body couldn’t be more different. I still remember when I transferred into Sevens, I tore my hamstring six times in the first season. It was so hard to adapt to the level of running and sprinting you do. For that whole 14 minutes, you’re sprinting and tackling constantly, compared to 80 minutes of mostly waiting in preparation as a winger.

If you play a couple seasons of Sevens and come back to 15-a-side, your skills and fitness are ridiculously better. People like Hugo Keenan who was in the star team for Ireland for the last 15 games all came back from Sevens into mainstream rugby and have flourished.

Would you ever consider coming out of retirement and returning to 15-a-side rugby?

Rugby is my first love and I didn’t want to retire, but when you’re busting your body in a full-time job for 18 grand a year, it’s not feasible long-term. I’m really sad to walk away but I had to for my life and my career. I had achieved all I had set out to do in the sport and felt like it was the right time to walk away.

How has your fitness regime changed from when you played 15 a side rugby to now?

When I was playing for Munster I was quite conscious of what I was eating and keeping myself in decent shape with a lot of protein to keep myself big and handle the impacts. I was weighing in at about 83kg, coming up against 120kg props, and who’s going to win that collision? At Sevens you have to run so much, so I had to hike up my carbs. You’re eating pizza, pasta rice, you literally can’t eat enough food to counteract how much you’re exercising.

Since retiring I’ve dropped how much I eat, and I definitely eat a bit more out of pleasure than I could before. I can now have some chocolate but I train in different ways. I’ve done a lot of long-distance running recently which wasn’t an option while training for Sevens, and a bit of Crossfit and things like that. I’ve enjoyed trying a lot of different things, especially Instagram Live’s which has led me to develop my own fitness app, Bettr with Greg.

How did Bettr with Greg start? 

It’s been in the back of my head for a very long time, and I never thought it could happen. There’s a lot that goes into making an app, a lot of time and money that I couldn’t manage when training for the Olympics. It was a lovely idea but I wasn’t sure if it was possible.

Then when lockdown happened I saw a lot of people doing live exercise videos and I started getting into YouTube and people enjoyed them. And I was enjoying making them. So I thought to myself that I could turn that passion into an everyday job where I can help people?

How did you come up with the app’s name?

The name came from the mindset that I want to help people improve and get a little bit better together. A lot of these courses and apps aim at getting people at peak fitness, so I didn’t want to be ‘Greg Fit’ or ‘Greg Health’. I wanted to stay away from that and just help people get a little bit better, day by day.

I didn’t want to just film 50 videos, put them on an app, and go sip piña coladas in Dubai. If you’re working out, I’m going to be there with you and we can all do it together. You don’t have to compare yourself to anyone except yourself. It’s all bodyweight stuff so you don’t have to go to a gym or spend loads on a setup.

How much has your rugby background influenced Bettr with Greg? 

Massively. The app is a mixture of what I had to do as an Olympian and my experience as a Pilates instructor and a weight-loss coach. I have all these different elements, flexibility, fitness, and nutrition, then I put it all together to make it enjoyable and accessible to everyone. It’s not that difficult, you just need to raise your heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes three or four times a week and eat well. I’m just simplifying it and making it fun.

What is the importance of the charity during the festive period, and why is Caudwell Children important to you?

Christmas is a time for giving. A time when we all come together and show our care and love for one another. we should also be mindful that there are many people and animals who find this time of the year very difficult. So giving back is so important at Christmas as something so small to yourself could be massive to another person and really make their Christmas ten times better.

Caudwell is important to me because every child deserves a good happy life no matter their circumstances. Caudwell do everything they can to improve the lives of disabled children and their families. After attending the butterfly ball I was overwhelmed with all the amazing things Caudwell has done to improve the lives of so many individuals .

How are you spending the festive period?

I’ll be spending the festive period with my family and friends. It’s actually the first time in years my family are altogether, my brothers were usually on tour with the army which always made Christmas difficult. This is the first year in a long time we are together as a family. 

I will also be with my little nephew for his first Christmas which is exciting, plus my youngest brother and girlfriend are also expecting and due in a few weeks time. It’s a family Xmas with some amazing wonderful additions, I couldn’t be happier!!!

Tell me about some of the other lifestyle brands you are working with.

I’ve worked with a number of lifestyle brands, since leaving one of the main ones I’m excited about is Gym Cub. In fact I have something very exciting happening with them soon. I met them through their shop launch and fell in love with their products instantly. I honestly cannot wait.

Fitness is so important to having a good healthy lifestyle and if you can look and feel amazing at the same time then it’s a big thumbs up from me. Alongside this I have worked with a number of fashion and beauty brands.

I also had the honour of meeting the author of Grumbalina Books as they were one of the sponsors at the Caudwell Butterfly Ball. Their collection of books are amazing for teaching young children such valuable life lessons. 

Have you got any tips for feeling your best over the festive period?

My tips are to make sure you make time for yourself, unwind and make the most of the smelly gift sets you receive under the tree and in your stocking. I say treat yourself.

We’ve all had a crazy year, so make sure you put your happiness first. Go and eat that Christmas turkey and pudding and try not to make yourself feel guilty for it, as we all deserve it. The new year is when we can work it off.

Have you been making the most of glamorous nights out or are you a homebody?

I am a social butterfly so you will usually see me out and I absolutely love it. I love meeting new people and making up for lost time and nights out I’ve missed due to Covid. However as we roll closer to the end of the year, I think home life is calling me.

My bladder and dancing feet need a little rest, and I know when the new year starts I need to be better at spending more time at home which will allow me make time for myself. I need try not to let FOMO get the better of me as it’s okay to have some me time.

What is your usual going out ritual?

My going out ritual is to crank up the old school tunes whilst I get ready, which usually makes me late as I get too carried away singing. I’ve got to have a cheeky glass of something. I can’t get ready in silence I need to get myself in the mood otherwise my bed would call me.

How has life changed for you since Love Island?

Life is crazy, it’s amazing, it’s overwhelming but great. I have gone to so many events, met incredible people and had amazing opportunities that I could only have dreamed of. That being said it’s a busy life, so it’s finding the balance between managing the old life and new – I wouldn’t change it for the world though, even if I am knackered a lot of the time.

How did the show support mental health and dealing with fame?

Love island have been incredible. The show gave me the option to have a psychologist who checks in with me weekly as well as the show having their very own welfare team. After leaving they also got me prepped with how to deal with the new world I would be stepping into. I honestly cannot fault love island and the support that is offered in terms of your mental health.

Who are you still in contact with from the show?

I’m in contact with a handful of people, you may have seen from photos that I’ve formed a very close bond with Rachel and Amy, us girls literally talk every single day and they have been my rocks on this crazy journey, a journey no one will ever understand unless you’ve done it. I’m also in contact with Georgia, Kaz, Lillie and Brett, Harry. I’ll always make time for people who want to make time for me. That being said I’ll happily contact or talk to anyone if they wished to reach out.

What’s a secret that not many people know?

So I’m actually really blind and wear saucepan glasses at night. I had to wear my contacts in the villa and take them out when everyone was sleeping.

Another would be that whilst I was in holding to go into the Love Island villa, I found my ex on this years Too Hot To Handle. What are the chances of two exes ending up on dating shows at the exact same time?

Finally, what are your plans for 2022?

I would love to get back into TV or go into radio. I think once you have a taste of it it’s hard not to want to go back. I feel like my full true personality and self wasn’t displayed in my short time within the Villa.

Alongside entertainment I would love to open my own salon. At some point I want to get some travelling under my belt if Covid allows it, oh and hopefully within all this I manage to find a man, as that search is still continuing.

What did you see yourself doing as a child?

Like most children of the seventies, I envisaged myself becoming an astronaut or a rock star. I held on to these dreams for quite some time but was eventually convinced by my careers officer at my comprehensive school that these would not be safe options, and that a GCSE in woodwork might not get me on the NASA short list.

What was your first job?

My first job was in fact a labourer on a building site. It was hard work, but it taught me the value of things. I would eventually get home covered in muck; my feet having turned orange from the building sand. The pay was around £50 per week which actually seemed a small fortune to me at the time. I only had to worry about fuel for my Vespa and a Wimpy, I thought I was Little Lord Fauntleroy.

Tell us how Prestige Pawnbrokers came about?

The idea of setting up prestige pawnbrokers came about during the crash of 2008 and the banking crisis. Loans were being called in and well-heeled individuals suddenly were in need of some finance. Pawnbroking seemed an ideal vehicle to get into the money lending business bearing in mind my background and skills I had to bring to the table.

Among other enterprises, I had previously dealt in classic cars and had imported furniture from Asia as well as bought and sold all sorts of interesting items, almost from the day I left school. The concept of high-end asset lending seemed a no brainer to me at the time and the added security of holding on to the asset for the duration of the loan was very appealing.

What were the challenges you faced bringing your idea to the market?

We understood that the market was there, but the main challenge was getting other people to understand it too. Marketing proved the key to its success and once we gained some notoriety with the press and various news stories, we started to gain some traction in this field. Obviously once the TV show was aired, we became centre stage in this particular arena. We understood that the market was there, but the main challenge was getting other people to understand it too.

You specialise in luxury goods. What’s your best ever find?

I’ve seen some wonderful works of art and some truly beautiful pieces of jewellery but there are some items that are perhaps not as valuable to the collector’s markets that are in my opinion priceless. I’ve spoken about this previously, but we were presented with some very personal letters handwritten by the former Rolling Stones member Brian Jones.

They contained touching thoughts and personal details relating to his relationship and his career as an up and coming band member. The letters were addressed to Brian’s mother and father prior to the band becoming famous and were found in the attic of a house that was owned by his parents. Brian was sadly found dead not too long after these letters were written which made the content all the more poignant.

The band are a massive piece of British rock culture and therefore these letters are priceless, they simply cannot be replaced, as such there is no real value that can be placed on them. They cannot be replicated or surpassed as the moment has gone.

On a smaller scale, where do you think is a good place to start looking for antique gems etc?

The issue is that there are so many avid collectors out there all looking in the same places.

My advice is to search on all of the usual platforms such as Facebook marketplace and Gumtree. It’s a numbers game but you can pick up the odd gem on some of these. Set up an alert so that when key words are put in the listing you are sent a notification to alert you of a advert with these words entered in the heading, this way you will be aware of it as soon as the listing goes live.

What’s the most invaluable advice you were given?

The best piece of advice I was ever given was by a dear old friend of mine who had been very successful in the property market. He said: “if you want to succeed in business, your desire for gain must be greater than your fear of loss.” This stuck with me ever since he first said these words to me 20 years ago. I was discussing a property deal at the time and I was a little twitchy about it…. I’ll keep you guessing about how it turned out.

Who or what inspires you?

People who strive to do something and are prepared to work hard. Individuals with vision and those who are prepared to take risks to better themselves. I’m talking about those with an idea or a dream that are prepared to risk all and believe in their concept or idea, this is inspiring. It’s not all about the money it’s about having the balls to put everything on the line in order to achieve something.

Is there anything you’re still trying to source and would really like?

Well we are all looking for that golden ticket, lost piece of art or the Porsche motorcar James Dean famously died in following a crash in 1955. Nobody knows its whereabouts but there has been plenty of speculation ever since.

To be honest I’m quite content with the wonderful artefacts, collectables and fine jewellery we see on a weekly basis…I haven’t got time to go treasure hunting.

Obviously, the last year has hit many people and businesses hard, any advice for anyone who could be potentially sitting on a bit of unknown cash?

My advice to anyone sitting on some cash right now would be to hold on to it for another six to 12 months as things are going to get very interesting.

Cash will ultimately be king as it always is during times of economic downturn and opportunities will be plentiful. Sit yourself down and buckle up for the ride

As a woman in her fifties how are you generally finding your skin overall? Does ageing bother you – such as your skin starting to ‘sag’?

“Ha – I don’t think anyone likes the idea of sagging! I don’t mind looking my age – I’m now 52 – but having said that I don’t want to look tired when I’m not, which seems to be the main side effect of aging. I’ve quite pronounced lines at the side of my eyes, but I’m OK with that because it shows I laugh a lot and scrunch my face up, which is what you’re supposed to do when you’re happy!”

You spoke on Instagram about how journalists ask what your beauty and exercise routines are, as opposed to those concerning a healthy mind. Why is this so important to you?

“It’s because everything we do starts with the mind. How we think impacts what we do. While it’s wonderful now that people are able to be more open about how they are feeling mentally, it’s rare that we talk about the things we can be doing to keep ourselves feeling strong in mind as well as body.”

What do you regularly do as a set routine to help maintain a healthy mindset?

“Having a regular morning and evening routine is the most important thing to do when it comes to maintaining a healthy mindset, as it’s about the little things rather than the big things. They are free, and not sexy or Instagrammable, but they work!

In the evening I like to go to bed at a regular time, so I get at least seven hours of sleep. I also lay my clothes out the night before so I have one less stress in the morning, and I always bring a glass of water to bed so that in the morning I have it there ready to drink. I also leave my phone downstairs to charge overnight, rather than having it right next to me.”

Is there anything else you do?

“In the morning I always make my bed. By that I mean I really make it; I pull the bottom sheet tight, and fluff up the duvet and pillows. You deserve to get into a beautifully-made bed at the end of a hard day, so see it as a way of rewarding yourself, and not a chore.

“I also drink a glass of water to flush out my system, then do some kind of movement – whatever works for you. I say to people to exercise in whatever way you like, from yoga to dancing around your kitchen to the radio – just move your body!

“Next, at the end of your shower, end with a blast of cold water – the coldest you can take – for at least a minute, breathing in hard through your nose and blowing out through your mouth. It’s incredible for your immune system and also makes you feel great – it’s like you’ve achieved something already, before you’ve even started your day. Follow this with allowing 10 minutes before you start your day for meditation. This can be guided through an app or on your own.”

We all know that exercise is good for the mind and have seen on social media you’re back running again after a break. What is it about running that you love so much?

“I’ve always enjoyed exercise; I like how it feels to be strong and healthy. However, over the past year I’ve been so focused on building up my business that I have let that side of things slide. A friend mentioned that she was doing the Couch to 5k app, so I decided to give it a go – and I really enjoyed it!

I ended up doing it to the end and have carried it on; now 5k is my basic run that I do a few times a week. It’s time on my own, I do it at my own pace and listen to the radio, or a podcast or sometimes music. I don’t always enjoy it when I’m doing it, but I always enjoy how I feel afterwards. I have zero plans to run any further than that though! I’ve enough challenges to keep me busy!”

What other ways do you exercise?

“I use the 7 Minute app, and do three rounds a couple of times a week as well. It’s really simple, and a good way to fit in some kind of movement into your day. I also wear an Apple watch, so every time I go for a walk I register it. I like to close my movement rings every day – it’s a good goal to have.”

Now, going against all that you’ve spoken about with regards to the importance of a healthy mind routine, let’s now talk about your at-home beauty regime. What are your five beauty must-haves and why do you love them so much?

“1. Lip salve. I can’t be without it! I have one in every coat pocket and every handbag. I don’t mind which kind, as long as I have some handy.

“2. Scrunchies. I always have my hair tied back when I am working from home, as I hate having it in my face when I’m trying to concentrate. I always use a scrunchie rather than a band, as it is meant to be better for your hair.

“3. Body brush. I do this a couple of times a week to keep my skin smooth. Once you get over the initial prickliness it actually feels nice, and it does work.

“4. Body mousse. I like to moisturise all over after my shower, but it has to be with something that goes on quickly!

“5. SPF 50 for my face. Every single day.”

What about make-up?

“I definitely wear more make-up the older I’ve got, and I think I’m better at putting it on now. I wear a tinted moisturiser on top of my face cream and SPF, or foundation. I use a variety of make-up; I really like Gary Cockerill’s range. I use his foundation and his concealer, bronzing and blush palette.”

Back in June you became a certified life coach – why does this mean so much to you?

“I have coaching myself; I felt that it was important that I had someone I could talk to about my goals and help me achieve them. Getting a coach made me see that we rarely look at other parts of our life and keep them in balance and how important that is.

Whilst I knew I was changing women’s lives through the books I’ve written and the content I give my community, I wanted to be sure I was doing it in the right way. So I decided to be trained as a coach, so that I felt more confident in what I was doing and saying. I offer group coaching sessions to our community rather than one-on-one, because I like seeing everyone joining in and figuring out what they need to do to help themselves. Helping others is a perfect way for you to help yourself and it’s a joy to watch the ripple effect.”

You stated in another interview that you quit Loose Women to help “women change their mindsets so they can feel better about themselves.” What did you mean by this?

“For me leaving Loose was a leap into the unknown because I was totally switching careers after two decades in one industry. It was scary! I have always wanted to help make people feel better about themselves, in everything I’ve done – in my personal and professional life. After running This Girl Is On Fire as a free online space for a few years, I knew I needed to take the next step and go all-in to make it a business.

“I created a gym for the mind, where women can join to become mentally strong rather than physically strong. Just as you wouldn’t join a gym, stand at the back and watch other people do sit-ups and wonder why you don’t have a six-pack, you can’t simply read one self-help book and that’s it, you feel great. We are what we consistently do, so I give women a space where we consistently encourage them to love themselves, to learn how to change their unhelpful thought patterns, and feel brave.”

Andrea, you’re busy promoting PURESKIN’s PureHydro facial. What is it you love so much about the treatment?

“The PureHydro facial helped me get my glow back. I had a course of six treatments, and my skin looks so much brighter and clearer. I’ve also never had so many kind comments from my friends, family and make-up artist about how my skin is looking. You know something is working wonders when people comment.”

You’ve spoken out about how you’ve struggled to keep your skin hydrated as you’ve gotten older – have the course of facials helped?

“The facials have made a real difference to how hydrated and plumped my skin feels. Before my skin was looking a little dull, but now I feel nourished and confident!”
