Unsure on travel insurance? You’re not alone. Read on for advice based on real life customer enquiries, cultural shifts and trends, courtesy of travel insurer, CoverForYou.

If I keep quiet about a medical condition it won’t cost as much

Wrong: keeping quiet is often the major mistake travellers make when buying travel insurance. It’s really important that all pre-existing medical conditions are declared when you’re purchasing insurance. If you don’t, your entire policy could be invalid or cancelled, any claims rejected, or not paid in full. Declare or beware!

Buying travel insurance can go at the bottom of my ‘to do’ list

Don’t do this: buy it at the same time as booking your trip. You’ll be covered for things that go wrong before you even board a plane, train or ship. You could get ill and no longer being able to travel. Someone you’re travelling with is ill so you would rather not go alone; or your trip gets cancelled, amongst others. Consider buying an annual multi-trip policy. That way you’re covered for as many trips as you’re planning to take in a year without having to sign up each time. It can sometimes work out cheaper, too.

I’ll just buy the cheapest cover

Don’t just be driven by price. Instead make sure the policy covers what you need. Why? It could end up saving you thousands in the long run! Think about what you’re likely to be doing on your trip and who you’re travelling with, to make sure you’re properly covered. Remember: cutting corners to save a few pounds is never a good option. Medical costs can be extortionate, especially if you’re heading to the US.

Discounted travel insurance means I’ll save money

Discounts aren’t always what they seem. To get the best value, make sure the discount applies to the entire policy. That includes costs to cover pre-existing medical conditions, or add-ons like trip disruption cover – and not just the basic policy. If the discount only applies to the basic and you’re paying full price on the extras you need, chances are the discount shrinks to pretty much none at all. Shop around and read the fine print, to make sure that 20% discount really is a 20% saving on your wallet.

All the gadgets I take are covered by my policy

Packing your phone, iPad, laptop and headphones is second nature to most. But many travel insurance policies don’t include cover for gadgets as standard. If your gadgets aren’t insured elsewhere, you’ll often need to add this as optional cover. Almost all policies limit cover for high value pieces such as engagement rings, usually around the region of £100 to £250 per item, or per insured.

How does the Iran war affect my travel insurance?

“We expect to see the cost of travel insurance rising, especially for travel outside Europe,” says CoverForYou Managing Director Alan Dean. “This is due to a greater risk you’ll need to claim for cancelling your flight, and increased costs when you do, along with an increased likelihood of delayed flights and curtailed trips.

“In the short term, we’re also seeing reduced availability of cover for destinations that rely heavily on flights routing via the Middle East. This could change while talks take place over the next few weeks, and, if an end to the war is agreed, flights to this region could return to normal. It’s very hard to predict at this early stage, so erring on the side of caution is strongly advised.

“Given this, we expect the cost of travel insurance to also increase because of higher cancellation risk (changes in FCDO advice) and cost (we expect to see the cost of holidays increase) and in trip disruption (an increase in delayed flights and trip curtailment costs).”

Reader offer!

CoverForYou are offering an exclusive 20% discount code for Checklist readers on their travel insurance with the code VDM6BLVYZ3. Valid until 31 August 2026, it covers annual multi-trip or single-trip policies. These must be purchased directly from the CoverForYou website and cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer.

Keep make-up minimal

“You need less make-up than you think when away; but there are a few staples I always take. I swear by DCYPHER Beauty My Custom Foundation (£39) as it’s a bespoke blend created to match my skin tone perfectly. I also love Fenty Beauty Set It Down Superfine Blurring Setting Powder (£25) to combat shine, and Charlotte Tilbury Air Brush Flawless Finish Setting Spray (£32) which keeps make-up in place all day.”

Travel frizz is a no

“What I take to keep my locks looking great depends on what hairstyle I’m rocking, but one thing I always pack is a product with anti frizz ingredients to avoid sun damage to my hair, as well as providing it with nutrients. At the moment, my go-to is Charlotte Mensah Manketti Hair Oil (£52) which is a fabulous multi-tasker.”

Always use protection

“I’m careful to protect my skin in the sun and Shades of Melanin is an amazing brand I can’t do without. Black girls need sunscreen too! I also hate getting bitten by mozzies, so reach for the strong stuff: Lifesystems Expedition MAX DEET Mosquito Repellent (£7.99). Then at bedtime, when I want something softer I use Avon Skin So Soft Original Dry Oil (£8). It smells gorgeous!”

Nail the wardrobe

“I have family homes on both Grenada and Saint Lucia, which I’ve visited since childhood. I escape there whenever I can, so when case space is at a premium, there’s a few bits and pieces I fall back on. A leopard print scarf is a must, whether I use it to cover my hair or wear as a sarong or a scarf. I also keep my beachwear pretty simple. I love high-waisted, wide-leg bikini bottoms as they cover a multitude of sins, then I just toss in a matching bikini top and colourful cover-up dress.”

The topic of Formula 1 has never been so relevant, especially with the release of the Netflix series Drive to Survive. Adding to the buzz of this series was the announcement of the latest race for the 2023 season in Las Vegas; a night race that promises a whole new level of spectacle and excitement.

With this, and knowing that Formula 1 is loved by many worldwide, Checklist and Holidu are highlighting the best destinations that offer spectacular scenery and world-class entertainment. Here are the top 10 F1 destinations that should be on every fan’s radar this season.

1. Monza, Italy

Taking the first place crown for being the best destination for F1 fans is Monza in northern Italy. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza, also known as the Temple of Speed, is the fifth oldest national Grand Prix. It has over 11,000 reviews on Google and an average rating of 4.6 stars. Emotion is always present here, whether it’s the high speeds this track allows drivers to reach or the dedicated Ferrari fans. Outside of the race weekend, the circuit allows you to ride around the track by bike, car or van and even offers a go-kart track where you can spend a fun-filled day with the family.

2. Monte Carlo, Monaco

In second place we find Monaco. On the Mediterranean Sea, bordered by France, Monaco is known as a millionaire’s playground – complete with luxury hotels, fancy restaurants and huge casinos. As for the Monte Carlo circuit, it has 4.7 stars and is known for being the slowest on the calendar, but it is also the trickiest to navigate, with tight twists and turns between expensive buildings facing the sea. Place d’Armes is one of the best and brightest spots for fans; another hotspot is La Rascasse, a bar near the pit entrance.

3. Silverstone, UK

The English circuit secures third place on the podium. The Silverstone circuit has over 15,000 reviews on Google and an average of 4.6 stars, which comes as no real surprise as it always presents itself as one of the favourites on the calendar, whether thats due to the fast corners or the spectacle it provides year after year. The Northamptonshire circuit has dedicated family areas, last year it offered coding workshops, electric go-karts and sports zones. The Red Arrows offer even more spectacle with their fantastic flypasts. Last year, as well as the brilliant entertainment there were musical acts such as Rudimental and Voice UK Anne-Marie judge Anne Marie.

4. Spa, Belgium

The Walloon Spa-Francorchamps circuit is the fourth-best destination for F1 fans to visit! South of the village of Francorchamps, it has hosted 54 Grand Prix races and has a wide variety of grandstands, which makes it easy to see not only the race, but also the bright and beautiful surrounding landscape; the area is known for its wooded valleys and natural springs. We’ll leave you with one piece of advice, choose the grandstands on top of the Eau Rouge bend and we promise you won’t regret it.

5. Montreal, Canada

In the middle of the ranking, we find Montreal. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a 4.361km motor racing circuit in the Quebec region. It is the venue for the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix and has hosted the drivers 40 times. When not hosting the event, the circuit is a unique facility in the province of Quebec where cycling, inline skating and racing enthusiasts come to train. Surrounded by lush gardens and a wide range of artwork, the circuit is a pleasant and relaxing venue, a good place to take a stroll. This multi-purpose track also provides excellent views of Montreal, with its strategic location in the heart of the St. Lawrence River.

6. Budapest, Hungary

The beautiful city of Budapest secures the seventh position. The Hungaroring circuit, with 4.7 stars on Google, is 4.381 km lonng and has crowned two drivers in its 20-year history: both Nigel Mansell in 1992 and Michael Schumacher in 2001. In addition, the Williams F1 team and Scuderia Ferrari have also secured the Constructors’ Championship at the Hungaroring, Williams in 1996 and Ferrari in 2001, 2002, and 2004. We leave two stands where to have the best view: Gold Stand 4 is situated on the outside of the first corner of the circuit and some of the best views of the Hungaroring can be found in the final corner of the circuit. Silver 3 is an excellent choice for a first time visitor to the circuit, as the stands are elevated above the track, providing a great view of the last corners and the main straight.

7. São Paulo, Brazil

In Seventh place, we find São Paulo. With the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, also known as Interlagos and with a 4.6 star rating. It is a 4.309km circuit and was renamed in 1985 to honour Formula 1 driver José Carlos Pace, who died in a plane crash in 1977. Attached to its facilities is a go-kart circuit in honour of Ayrton Senna. The circuit runs counter-clockwise. Our advice for the grandstand: Situated at the start of the main straight at Interlagos, the covered Grandstand B is one of the best places to watch the action in Brazil. Grandstand B offers views of the long approach to the final corner, the pit lane entrance and some of the team garages, as well as the Formula 1 podium.

8. Barcelona, Spain

The eighth position goes to the legendary Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which has hosted 31 Grand Prix races, is 4.675km long and is a track of two halves: one consists almost entirely of a single straight, and the other is a tangle of tight corners. For some fun away from the race, the facilities at this fantastic venue include Rancho Rocco, an off-road motorbike track open to everyone from beginners to experts, and race fans can sign up for pit rides and autograph sessions.

Photo by Marc Kleen on Unsplash

9. Zandvoort, The Netherlands

In ninth place is Zandvoort in the Netherlands. The town of Zandvoort is situated on the dunes of the Dutch North Sea coast, half an hour west of the Dutch capital of Amsterdam, and the circuit itself is located right next to the beach. It held the first Grand Prix in 1950 and has hosted a total of 33, it is also the second home of Dutch world champion Max Verstappen. A curiosity about the circuit? It is British driver Jim Clark who has the most wins followed by his compatriot Jackie Stewart.

10. Melbourne, Australia

Securing the final place in our ranking is the city of Melbourne in Australia. The Albert Park Circuit uses sections of public road surrounding Melbourne’s Albert Park Lake and never fails to provide drama – notable incidents include Martin Brundle’s car being launched over David Coulthard’s McLaren in 1996 (Brundle’s car ended up in two pieces) and Ralf Schumacher’s car flying over Rubens Barrichello’s Ferrari in 2002. Fun fact? The Australian Grand Prix holds the record for the shortest F1 race – although the record in question was actually set in Adelaide, the previous home of the event. Torrential rain led to it being cancelled after 24 minutes and Ayrton Senna was declared the winner.

Checklist collaborated with Holidu, the search engine for holiday rentals, to create this list.

A ski holiday isn’t just about time on the pistes – many skiers choose their resort based on the après-ski party scene, too. Whether you want to sit quietly with a pint enjoy the last rays of sunshine on the mountain or totally let your hair down at a slopeside party, dancing in ski boots to a DJ or live band, après is an important part of the skiing day?

Every skiing country in the world does après slightly differently but one thing’s for certain: there’s guaranteed fun across the board.

Checklist has joined forces with Powderhouse to pick out some of the best ski resorts to party at après, some of the big headliners where you’re guaranteed some fun.

1. St Anton, Austria

There can be fewer more famous places in the world for après than the MooserWirt, an Austrian institution. Sitting just above the town on the Galzig piste, this place is heaving every afternoon with DJ, beers and shots of Jägermeister until 8pm (Powderhound tip: here’s a hotel behind it, so you can stay right at the heart of the action). Across the piste is the Krazy Kanguruh — again not for the faint-hearted. Both require a ski down to the town afterwards, when you can stop in at Basecamp and complete St Anton’s very own après-ski equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle. If you need something a little less rowdy, Heustadl is on the Blue 1 piste, or Anton Bar, at the base of the Galzig gondola, offer more laid-back options.

2. Val d’Isère, France

Top of the charts for its massively varied scene — most skiers will recognise the big names here even if they haven’t skied Val d’Isère. This resort was the site of the very first La Folie Douce, the open-air nightclub where the table stomping is in full swing every afternoon until 5pm. Situated at the top of La Dialle, although you can ski in, you can also get the lift back down. Then there’s Cocorico at the Rond Point des Pistes, another massive open-air party scene which kicks off slightly later in the afternoon with DJ and live band. Other (slightly quieter) institutions are the Pacific Bar, Le Bananas and the Moris Pub — one of the very first pubs to open in Val d’Isére. Later on the party moves to the infamous Dicks Tea Bar or the Underground Café.

Photo by Nicolai Berntsen on Unsplash

3. Verbier, Switzerland

Rub shoulders with the rich and famous in Verbier. Negotiate the likes of Ice Cub (at Ruinettes) or the yurts of Bar 1936 before dropping down into the town to enjoy some chic après at Le Rouge at one end of the town or some rowdier fun at Pub Mont Fort at the other. Another old favourite is Fer à Cheval (Tip: free pizzas are handed out at après), or head to the central Farinet, which hosts live bands every night of the season. If your après antics take you as far as the Farm Club, Verbier’s long-standing nightclub, don’t forget your credit card — the Farm is renowned as one of the most expensive destinations in the Alps.

4. Andermatt, Switzerland

A perhaps surprising entry, the freeride Mecca of Andermatt is sneaking its way into the après-ski charts. The resort has a special après-ski adapted coach on the railway taking skiers between the linked resorts of Sedrun and Disentis via the 3000m Overalp Pass (an overall journey time of an hour). Consumption of food and drink in the bar is mandatory, and (Tip: there’s an on-board DJ at weekends). In Andermatt itself, the arrival of La Vache — from Rob Sawyer, James Blunt, Lawrence Dallaglio and Carl Fogarty, the same team behind the Verbier restaurant — is shaking things up. Resident DJ is Konal Kirsten (from Chicago, London and Ibiza) with the likes of Seb Fontaine, Brandon Block, Toby Anstiss and Goldfish performing throughout the season.

5. Whistler, Canada

North America isn’t known for its après scene, but Whistler is one of the exceptions with the Garibaldi Lift Company (GLC) topping the bill. Located just above the Whistler gondola building, you can enjoy a shot skis and beer on the terrace while watching skiers coming down the mountain (Tip: there’s a masseuse going from table to table at GLC, too). If you’re staying in Whistler’s Upper Village, Merlin’s, at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, is a great place to enjoy some end-of-day nachos. There are many other places to explore — Buffalo Bill’s with its a resident DJ and a great cocktail menu, the ubiquitous Irish pub, Dubh Linn Gate, serving up live music and Guinness and more pumping music at the Longhorn Saloon.

Image by Photo Mix from Pixabay

6. Aspen-Snowmass, Colorado

Surprisingly European in its approach to après, the residents of this town ski hard and party harder. Things kick off at Cloud Nine on Highlands, with a classic European open-air party, ski boot table dancing, champagne quaffing and live DJ. On Aspen Mountain, Little Nell this year launched “The Beach” at Sundeck —where skiers can enjoy drinks and snacks and live DJ while lounging on deckchairs. For a chic atmosphere, head to the Wet Deck at the W, Ajax Tavern at the Little Nell or Chica at the Little Nell Residences just next to the Silver Queen Gondola at the base of Aspen Mountain. (Tip: Ajax Tavern serves up unbeatable truffle fries.) Then there’s the Red Onion and Limelight Lounge — the latter des great pizzas after skiing. Later in the evening, Belly Up Aspen is an institution — the live music venue was founded in 2005 and still goes strong. Then there’s the Caribou Club and 7908 Aspen for a more chic vibe.

7. Mayrhofen, Austria

Home of the Snowbombing festival, this town goes off at après, starting at the Pilzbar at the top of Penken cable car with its umbrella bar and terrace. Further down in the town is the Bruck n Stadl which regularly features international DJs and a crazy party vibe that seems unique to Austria. (Tip: for a unique vibe, try the White Lounge — a giant candlelit igloo where waiters skate around serving drinks.) There’s dancing on tables to classic tunes at the Ice Bar next to the Penken lift, while the Scotland Yard Pub enjoys a huge reputation as one of the best places to party in Austria.

8. Alpe d’Huez, France

There’s more saxophones, dancers, DJs and fun from La Folie Douce where you can stomp in your ski boots until late into the afternoon before transferring to the Underground Bar in town. Known for its live sports, music and loyal clientele, this place is run by Brits and serves up reasonably priced drinks. Smithy’s Tavern is a favourite watering hole, and when the shadows have grown (very) long, revellers head downstairs to L’Igloo which stays open until 5.30am but probably best ditch your ski boots before that point. The Speakeasy Arena is known for its brilliantly eclectic and varied selection of music while Mo’s serves up cheesy choons at après for those who want to party hard.

Photo by Yaroslav Shuraev from Pexels

9. Cervinia, Italy

Several new hotels have opened this winter in this buzzy Italian resort that offers a cheaper view of the Matterhorn — likely to only increase the already well-established fun at après-ski. Grab beers by the pitcher at the Yeti or enjoy live music and terrace drinks at the Thistles Pub in the Dragon hotel which offers a homely vibe with its British pub décor. The Umbrella bar, right at the foot of the slopes, is a firm favourite with live music midweek, while the family-run Lino’s bar, opposite Cervinia’s ice rink, is known for its live music on Sundays. (Tip: if you like a G&T, the tiny Tasty bar on Cervinia’s main street has more than 500 different types of gin). Later in the night head to the Sound Club which has a great cocktail menu.

The 210km Grandvalira attracts skiers for its low-VAT and duty-free prices, and while the après is lively at all the resorts, its Pas de le Casa that attracts the real party-hard crowd with almost too bars many to mention. The scene kicks off at the Coll Blanc, Kamikaze Surf bar and the Mazaya Igloo terrace. Pas 83 is great fun — a ski hire and storage location with a bar featuring live music and DJs (Top tip: if you store your skis here you’ll get a free drink every day). Free popcorn and shots are hounded out early at the London Underground, then there’s Costa Rodana, Paddy’s Bar, the Dubliner, an Irish bar split over two levels as well as sports on the big screen at the Milwaukee Bar.

MY TRIP TO… THE BAHAMAS

Seeing the pigs was sad

‘When I visited the Bahamas we took a boat out to see the famous pigs, but that was pretty screwed up! My understanding is that the locals realised that they could make a business out of taking tourists to see pigs on an island. They took a load of pigs out on a boat and left them there, and then started to charge tourists to go and see them. The pigs were angry and aggressive!’

Our villa was insane

‘We were in the Bahamas for a fitness retreat, staying on a private villa on a private beach – it had the picturesque white sand and insane blue sea you see on postcards. There were about 15 or 20 of us in total. My mate Wayne Lineker and I were the bad influencers in the group, as we did sneak out for a night to go and drink wine in a local bar!’

It was nice not to party

‘The best thing about the trip was having that time to bond with one of my close friends. Wayne and I have both always been known for our partying, so it was great to actually spend that time together in a non-party situation.’

Go and explore

‘My top tip is to get off the beaten track. The locals are amazing and so happy to talk to you. They’ll want to show you their culture and the less-known areas of the Bahamas, so get to know them and this can lead to the most incredible experience.’

MY TRIP TO… BALI

Fitness in paradise

‘I went on an adventure holiday and fitness retreat with Fifth Element Escapes. The business was created by these two insane fitness fanatics – Gemma is a well-known yoga instructor, and Buddy used to be a Royal Marine Commando, so the trips they put together are pretty unique. I can honestly say that this was the best fitness retreat I have ever been on.’

I loved every minute

‘The whole week was so special and while you didn’t have to do anything you didn’t want to take part in, I didn’t want to miss out on anything! From the moment you stepped off the plane, every detail had been thought of, and we travelled to an area of Bali that I’d never been to before, so I was made up to be a part of it.’

The yoga was unreal

‘Gemma took the yoga classes to a new level. As a part of the YIN practise she does, we were taken through one yoga pose that basically cuts off your circulation for a few minutes, so that after you’ve held that pose, you get this crazy rush of energy. I’ve never experienced anything quite like that before.’

Climb Mount Batur

‘We set off at 3am and hiked through the night, reaching the summit in time to watch the sunrise over the mountains. It’s just the most incredible experience and worth every second of the early start.’

MY TRIP TO… IBIZA

I don’t go mad like I used to

‘When I was younger, I used to go to places like Ibiza to party hard, but I can’t keep up anymore – I like to go for three or four days and I’ll set aside one day to have a party, then I’ll go and relax and enjoy what the island has to offer for the rest of the time.’

I mix where I stay

‘I stay in two places when I visit Ibiza – the Wi-Ki-Woo when I want to party, and the 7Pines resort in Cala Tarida when I want to relax. The Wi-Ki-Woo is the place to be when you want to really be in the mix of things, but the 7Pines gives you that bit more luxury when you’re ready to get away from it all.’

I supported Wayne

‘I flew to Ibiza to celebrate Wayne’s birthday and to visit his club. The best thing about my trip was definitely being there to support my friend at an important time in his life.’

Take things easy

‘My number one tip for Celebrity Secrets readers when visiting Ibiza has got to be… pace yourself!’

MY TRIP TO… MARBELLA

Marbs was so glam

‘I’ve been going to Marbella for a long time – I moved to the UK when I was 20, and Marbella was the first place I went to on holiday from there. Back then, it was so glamorous. I was 19 years old, and there were all these amazing girls in their bikinis, and I was like, “wow, this is where it’s at!”’

I stayed for a month

‘When I first visited Marbella it was my first real experience of being a “celebrity” – at that age, I felt like I’d made it! I was meant to only be there for two days for a club appearance at Linekers, which is where I first met Wayne. I ended up missing 22 flights home, stayed for four weeks, and was given a set of keys to Wayne’s apartment – and for his Ferrari!’

I’m so grateful for Marbella

‘Without Marbs I’d never have met Wayne and built up what has become a great friendship. That first time I arrived at Linekers, Wayne told me that he’d previously arranged for my dad to come and do a book launch for him, so it was great that he was now getting to work with his son. That felt special to me, like it was somehow meant to be that I was there, meeting him.’

MY TRIP TO… CHAMONIX

I climbed Mont Blanc for charity

‘I did the climb to raise awareness for the charity I’m a patron of, The National Association for Children of Alcoholics (Nacoa). We had to start climbing this training mountain, Gran Paradiso, which I thought was going to be easy. I put my 30kg bag on my back and halfway up, I thought to myself, I can’t do this. We had a team of 15 people and three had already dropped out. The guides told me that this is that point when it’s really a test of your mind, and that was what spurred me on to get to the top.’

There was no luxury

‘We spent the nights in little lodges with minimal water and soup and bread for a meal, then we’d just carry on climbing. We had to pass over a ravine known as the death ravine, because people have died there many times, which was terrifying.’

I was so proud to finish

‘When we eventually reached the top, I felt so elated. I don’t pretend that I’m an inspiration to people, but if I can use my platform in any way to help a situation that is important to me, then I’ll do whatever I can. Nacoa is a small charity and this awareness, and the fact that I could talk about them, really helped their cause.’

Make sure you’re prepared

‘If you think you want to climb Montt Blanc, don’t go ill-prepared. Get on the Stairmaster with a 40kg bag on your bag, because you are definitely going to need that training!’
