Summer’s here and our thoughts are turning to holidays. It’s not long until the kids finish school for the big break, so now’s a good time to be pulling out the suitcases and checking they’re still good to go.

If you need to upgrade your luggage because it’s past its best, or simply because you fancy a change then there’s a few features to look out for.

Does the case have wheels? Most do these days, but spinner wheels are a cut above. It means they swivel 360°, which is a gamechanger when it comes to rushing through an airport. A telescopic handle also makes life so much easier, as do TSA locks, which mean officials can open your case if necessary without trashing it.

Inside, pockets are essential for separating out small items such as jewellery, while compression straps hold clothing in place. Individual top and bottom compartments keep shoes and clothes apart, and if the case is extendable, then you’ll have room to pack those souvenirs for the journey home.

On short trips consider luggage size. If you’re not paying for hold luggage then the bag must fit under the seat on budget airlines, to avoid a charge – and cabin cases too have limits.

Industry experts have compared 5,000 travel insurance premiums across five popular tourist destinations close to near geopolitical hotspots, revealing which countries have seen the biggest price increases over the past year.

Holidaymakers travelling to Bulgaria are also seeing a sharp rise, with prices up 19%, possibly down to its proximity to Ukraine. Meanwhile, premiums for Cyprus have increased by 6%, Egypt by 4% and Poland by 8%.

How was the data compiled? Insurers regularly reassess risk when global tensions rise, particularly in destinations close to areas where travel complications might become more likely. Destinations situated close to areas experiencing heightened tensions – such as Iran and Ukraine – could see premiums shift as insurers reassess the likelihood of travel disruption, delays or emergency evacuation should issues escalate.

“Travel insurance prices change constantly as insurers respond to global events, the number of claims made and healthcare costs,” explains Helen. “Even if a destination remains popular despite its proximity to ongoing conflict, premiums can rise when the wider region becomes more uncertain. Travellers and holidaymakers shouldn’t assume last year’s prices will still apply and make sure they’re comparing policies carefully, rather than opting for the cheapest option, as cover can vary significantly. It’s also sensible to arrange insurance as soon as a trip is booked, check government travel advice before departure, and ensure any medical conditions are fully declared.”

If I keep quiet about a medical condition it won’t cost as much

Wrong: keeping quiet is often the major mistake travellers make when buying travel insurance. It’s really important that all pre-existing medical conditions are declared when you’re purchasing insurance. If you don’t, your entire policy could be invalid or cancelled, any claims rejected, or not paid in full.  Declare or beware!

Buying travel insurance can go at the bottom of my ‘to do’ list

Don’t do this: buy it at the same time as booking your trip. You’ll be covered for things that go wrong before you even board a plane, train or ship. You could get ill and no longer being able to travel. Someone you’re travelling with is ill so you would rather not go alone; or your trip gets cancelled, amongst others. Consider buying an annual multi-trip policy. That way you’re covered for as many trips as you’re planning to take in a year without having to sign up each time. It can sometimes work out cheaper, too.

I’ll just buy the cheapest cover

Don’t just be driven by price. Instead make sure the policy covers what you need. Why? It could end up saving you thousands in the long run! Think about what you’re likely to be doing on your trip and who you’re travelling with, to make sure you’re properly covered. Remember: cutting corners to save a few pounds is never a good option. Medical costs can be extortionate, especially if you’re heading to the US.

Discounted travel insurance means I’ll save money

Discounts aren’t always what they seem. To get the best value, make sure the discount applies to the entire policy. That includes costs to cover pre-existing medical conditions, or add-ons like trip disruption cover – and not just the basic policy. If the discount only applies to the basic and you’re paying full price on the extras you need, chances are the discount shrinks to pretty much none at all. Shop around and read the fine print, to make sure that 20% discount really is a 20% saving on your wallet.

All the gadgets I take are covered by my policy

Packing your phone, iPad, laptop and headphones is second nature to most. But many travel insurance policies don’t include cover for gadgets as standard. If your gadgets aren’t insured elsewhere, you’ll often need to add this as optional cover. Almost all policies limit cover for high value pieces such as engagement rings, usually around the region of £100 to £250 per item, or per insured.

How does the Iran war affect my travel insurance?

“We expect to see the cost of travel insurance rising, especially for travel outside Europe,” says CoverForYou Managing Director Alan Dean. “This is due to a greater risk you’ll need to claim for cancelling your flight, and increased costs when you do, along with an increased likelihood of delayed flights and curtailed trips.

“In the short term, we’re also seeing reduced availability of cover for destinations that rely heavily on flights routing via the Middle East. This could change while talks take place over the next few weeks, and, if an end to the war is agreed, flights to this region could return to normal. It’s very hard to predict at this early stage, so erring on the side of caution is strongly advised.

“Given this, we expect the cost of travel insurance to also increase because of higher cancellation risk (changes in FCDO advice) and cost (we expect to see the cost of holidays increase) and in trip disruption (an increase in delayed flights and trip curtailment costs).”

May half-term is not far off and it’s a great week for getting away from the pressures of work and school. And, unlike Easter, when you can’t count on the weather, the end of May is a bet for warmth and sunshine. As it’s the perfect time for a trip so to get you in the mood, we’ve rounded up a few UK family attractions and suggestions of where to stay.

Northumberland

They know a thing or two about castles in Northumberland, and the castle at Bamburgh is out of this world. Explore the battlements and wander through the King’s Hall. Next, marvel at the craftsmanship that went into creating a building as beautiful and imposing as this.

Afterwards, head down to the beach and paddle in the rock pools. You may even be lucky enough to see dolphins cavorting along the coast.

Nearby places to visit include Holy Island, Seahouses (great for fish and chips) and the Farne Islands, where seals and puffins bask in the sun.

Where to stay: Kipper Cottage in Seahouses, a short walk from the harbour and less than a 10 minute drive from Bamburgh. Seven nights from 23 May for two adults and two children costs £999. You can even take your dog!

Staffordshire

If you’re after an action-packed break then head to Tamworth and Drayton Manor. The theme park is one of the biggest in the UK and caters for all ages of children. Or head to Drayton Manor Zoo to meet the animals and learn about conservation. Tickets cost from £27.50 for ages 4+.

Other places to visit include Tamworth Castle and Statfold Country Park. Or visit the SnowDome and try your hand at skiing or sliding in the snow.

Where to stay: For the ultimate experience stay at the resort hotel and choose from a range of themed and family rooms. Prices start from £178.20 per night over May half term for a family of four.

Newcastle

This is a city where ancient and modern exist side by side, from the Norman Keep to vibrant restaurants along the quayside. Shopping is world-class and there’s loads to keep the kids entertained.

Take a trip to Seven Stories – the national centre for children’s books – at Ouseburn, where kids can listen to tall tales and explore exhibitions of favourite characters, like Mog the Cat and The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Or head to the Life Science Centre and marvel at lifesize animatronic dinosaurs.

Don’t miss the Gateshead Millennium Bridge – the world’s first tilting bridge – over the River Tyne. And make sure to visit iconic art work The Angel of The North.

Where to stay: Maldron Hotel Newcastle, 319.40 for three nights from 25 May for two adults and two children.

Cornwall

St Ives is that perfect combination of relaxation and fun, with gorgeous sandy beaches, such as Porthmeor and Porthminster,. There’ also a bustling town to explore.

Walk along the South West Coast Path to Carbis Bay. Or save your legs and take a train along the coast on the St Ives Railway. Visit an exhibition at Tate St Ives or discover the work of celebrated sculptor Barbara Hepworth at her former home.

Enjoy a picnic on the sands, learn to surf or simply paddle in the sea. Use the town as a base to explore – the Eden Project is an hour’s drive away and St Michael’s Mount 20 minutes by car.

Where to stay: A comfort chalet to sleep two adults and two children at Away Resorts St Ives Bay costs £747 for seven days from Saturday 23 May.

Devon

For an active holiday with lots of sunshine, East Devon is a great choice. The towns of Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton are both on the Jurassic Coast, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Look for fossils as you walk along the South West Coast Path or along the sandy, pebbly beaches. And don’t forget the rock pools.

The Donkey Sanctuary is a must for anyone who loves these gentle creatures. Over at Exmouth, award-winning attraction the World of Country Life  offers exhibitions, play areas and family activities.

Where to stay: Ladram Bay Holiday Park, with direct access to Ladram Bay beach. Four nights glamping in the Otterpod from Monday 25 May for two adults and two children is £780.

Norfolk

Norfolk is a county of contrasts, with sandy beaches and seaside, lakes and rivers, lush countryside and historic houses. Enjoy a day on the sands at Caister or Holkham, visit the seaside resorts of Cromer and Great Yarmouth, or discover the magic of Bewilderwood, an outdoor adventure park filled with tree houses, magical stories and characters to keep kids enthralled.

Head to the Broads National Park and hire a boat for the day to explore the waterways. Or let somebody else do the navigating and relax on a boat tour while you soak up the scenery.

Where to stay: The Old Bakehouse, Overstrand, just a five minute walk from the nearest beach. Seven nights from Saturday 23 May for two adults and two children costs £1,095.

Scotland

Around an hour’s ferry ride from the Scottish mainland, Arran is an exquisite blend of history, wildlife, rugged crags and beaches. Goat Fell is the highest peak on the island and popular with climbers, but for those wanting a more leisurely stroll there are many scenic walking trails, as well as the Arran Coastal Way to enjoy.

Paddle in the sea (warmed by the Gulf Stream), visit Brodick Castle, or take a trip back in time at the Heritage Museum. Foodies should make a point of trying the local cheese and visiting Lochranza Distillery, one of two whisky distilleries on the island.

Where to stay: Carraig Dhubh Cottage at Whiting Bay, next to the beach and under 10 miles from Brodick, is a great place from which to explore. Two nights from 27 May for two adults and two children costs £654.

London

After big family attractions, theatre, sightseeing and shopping? London has so much to offer. Start by visiting Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. Take a boat trip on the Thames, see the Capital on the London Eye and chill in Hyde Park. The Science Museum and the Natural History Museum will keep everyone happy, while Tate Modern and The National Gallery are must-sees.

Take in a West End show, watch the street performers in Covent Garden, get up close with celebs at Madame Tussauds or meet everybody’s favourite marmalade-eating character at the Paddington Bear Experience (photo above).

Where to stay: The Park Plaza County Hall, just a short walk from Westminster Bridge. A studio double room to sleep two adults and two children starts from £195 per night during May half term.

Northern Ireland

This year is the 40th anniversary of Giant’s Causeway being designated a Unesco World Heritage Site, so what better time to visit? The unique natural landscape is formed from thousands of hexagonal stones dating back 60 million years. Not only do you get to see it, but you get to experience it, walking across the basalt columns next to the sea.

Afterwards, head down the Causeway Coastal Route to discover possibly the most famous ship in the world at Titanic Belfast and see the story of the doomed vessel brought to life through interactive exhibitions.

Where to stay: Ballygally Castle Hotel on the Causeway Coastal Route is ideally placed for visiting Giant’s Causeway and Belfast. Rooms start at £200 per night for a family of four over May half-term.

Lake District

Experience the water, the mountains and the lush green countryside of the Lake District National Park from your base at Bowness. Take a boat trip around Windermere – the largest natural lake in England – or try your hand at kayaking, paddleboarding and wild swimming. There’s hikes to suit all ages and abilities, not to mention the highest mountains in England, including Scafell Pike and Skiddaw.

Little ones will love The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, and you can even visit the author’s home and the inspiration for her books. Don’t miss a visit to Grasmere (around 25 minutes drive away) for its world-famous gingerbread and for Dove Cottage and museum, once home to poet William Wordsworth.

Where to stay: Gavel Cottage, a short walk from the centre of Bowness-on-Windermere and from the lake. Seven nights for two adults and two children from 22 May costs £1,024.

Swap screens for a stroll

This may take persuasion, but getting out in nature with the family is a great way to pass on healthy habits and improve mental health. You can find lots of beautiful family-friendly trails on The National Trust website, with many being suitable for pushchairs and offering play areas or woodland for den building along the way. Use a step-counting app to keep tech-head teens satisfied too!

Join the hunt

If your kids are mad for treasure hunts, nudge them outdoors by joining the biggest hunt of them all — geocaching. Unfamiliar with the craze? A ‘geocache’ is a small waterproof container people hide which contains a logbook to sign and small trinkets to swap. There are over 189,000 hidden across the UK, and you can get involved by creating a free account on the geocaching website. Ready, steady, geo.

See a show for free

Sky-high prices for concerts, theatre, and sports events mean there are often not enough bums to fill seats. But here’s a tip: anyone receiving cost-of-living support or working as a teacher, volunteer, NHS or charity worker can actually bag complimentary tickets to some of the UK’s biggest events by simply registering at Tickets For Good. The entertainment world will be your oyster.

Visit the past

Britain boasts some of the finest museums in the world, so if you fancy exploring the past with your brood, you will be spoilt for choice. Most of the grand dames, including the British Museum and Natural History Museum, are free to enter and offer hands-on activities to keep kids engaged. Take a picnic to swerve the pricey cafe costs too.

Check out some street art

If you have a Banksy in the family, winter is a great time to grab a hot chocolate and take in some street art before the crowds descend. Places like Manchester’s Northern Quarter and Banksy’s hometown of Bedminster in Bristol are great postcodes for urban art critics to explore. You may even be able to find a free walking tour on websites such as FreeTour.com.

Visit a gallery

Prefer to appreciate your art in warmer surroundings? Pack your sketchpad and head to an art gallery near you. Iconic buildings like Tate Modern, the National Portrait Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art are all free to enter, allowing you to inspire little minds with famous paintings such as Van Gogh’s Sunflowers without opening your purse.

Dust off your bikes

If your wheels are in hibernation, it’s time to wake them up. Obviously cycling with younger children is best kept to safer traffic-free routes, but you will find plenty of doable options listed at Cycling UK, along with tips on everything from teaching your toddler to master a balance bike to more challenging routes for teenagers. Cycling shorts are strictly optional.

Get gardening

It doesn’t matter if you have a sprawling back garden or window box; little green fingers will love every opportunity to get dirty and prepare for spring. Make bird feeders by coating toilet paper rolls in peanut butter or lard and rolling them in bird seed; prune dormant shrubs, or plant hardy vegetable seeds on your windowsill to enjoy a longer growing season. Dobbies Garden Centres also run free monthly Little Seedling workshops for kids, so check them out.

Take in the view

From The Shard to The London Eye, views of the capital often come with a hefty fee — yet you can book free tickets to soak up the same iconic skyline at Sky Garden or Horizon 22, London’s highest free viewing platform. Prefer wilder panoramas? Why not stash some sarnies and take in some world-famous beauty spots such as Cheddar Gorge, Snowdonia and Dundle Door. If it rains, you will feel all the more Bear Grylls for it.

Hunt for fossils

Finally, remember that UK beaches are not just for sandcastles and rock pooling — they are also brilliant for fossil hunting! Make like Mary Anning and head to fossil spots like Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, Whitby, the Isle of Wight, or the chalk cliffs of Sussex and Kent to see what you can discover. Shark teeth, ammonites and belemnites will be a proud inspiration for many show-and-tells to come.

Brussels

First on the list when it comes to the best place to consider is Brussels. The Belgian capital has 83 festive activities spread across markets, skating rinks, and holiday events, giving tourists plenty of ways to enjoy the season. Moving around the city is just as enjoyable, as the weather stays mild, with temperatures around 9°C in December and with approximately two days of snow. The city’s also a less expensive getaway compared to other Western capitals, costing around a reasonable £85.

Paris

Paris comes in at second, offering more than 200 Christmas activities across the city, far more than any other holiday destination. Locals here organise 20 Christmas villages and set up 13 ice skating rinks, with pleasant December temperatures (around 10°C) making outdoor attractions even more fun. Despite its pricey reputation, daily expenses in Paris are low as well — about £76 when you combine hotel and meals.

Liverpool

Liverpool ranks third in the survey, with one of the most festive atmospheres in Britain. The city puts up Christmas decorations early — on or around 15 November — offering more than 100 holiday activities across its neighbourhoods. December brings around mild 10°C temperatures and zero snow days, meaning outdoor festivities can go ahead without the weather getting in the way. Best of all, Liverpool is also noticeably safer for families travelling with kids.

Zurich

Zurich comes next as the most affordable destination in the top five at just under £76 for food and lodging — significantly less than what other places charge. Another Zurich advantage is the real winter weather, as an average of 14 snow days in December gives the city a classic Christmassy feel. You and your family won’t have to worry about safety either, as Zurich has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe (77/100 safety index).

Manchester

Manchester rounds up our five suggestions as another British alternative for around the festive season. The city organises up to 90 activities, similar to neighbouring Liverpool – among them are 10 Christmas markets that keep the holiday spirit alive. Decorations here go up on 7 November, with the early start also helping to explain the city’s popularity, as more than half a million people have already looked up Manchester holiday options online.

But if you’re planning a camping trip this year, planning and packing can be a bit daunting. There are so many distinct products that can make your trip easier. Instead of scouring the internet for answers, here’s a comprehensive list of the most important items to pack (without the obvious like phones, wallets, and keys).

1. Big water bottle

Drinking water is the most important thing to pack for camping. The size you choose to bring should be based on your itinerary and available space.

If you have a lot of free space, it’s best to bring extra water, even though it’s quite heavy. It will help for washing up; and when it comes to water, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

2. Emergency food

Whether you plan to stick to your diet, make full meals, or pack a few sandwiches, it’s paramount that you pack some emergency or long-life food in case your perishable food, well, perishes.

Granola-based snacks (preferably with fruit and nuts) are always a good option; with fibre, protein and carbohydrates to keep you going in an emergency. Other popular choices are freeze-dried foods or pre-made food packs that only require boiling water to eat.

3. First-aid kit

It doesn’t have to be a full kit, but a first-aid kit with a basic collection of necessities is absolutely crucial if anything were to go wrong during your trip.

4. Cookware

If you plan on eating any substantial meals while camping, a bit of basic cookware is important. A simple list of options include: one pan, one pot, one spatula or wooden spoon, some washing up liquid or wet wipes (which are dual-purpose), cutlery, plates/bowls, one chopping board, and one sharp knife (or use a pocketknife; also dual-purpose). Some companies offer easy-to-store options that include most or all of these items.

5. Toilet paper

Everybody has to go at some point. It’s much more enjoyable with toilet paper rather than the alternatives. In addition, toilet paper can be used to wipe messes up, or you could pack some kitchen roll if you have some free space.

6. Sleeping gear

While there are many ways to build a shelter, pillow, and bed out of trees and shrubs, it’s certainly easier, less time consuming, and more comfortable to bring these things from home.

The important pieces of sleeping gear are: a tent, sleeping bag, spare blanket, inflatable pillow, inflatable mattress or sleeping pad, and a tarp. With these essentials, you can be comfortable and well-rested for whatever adventures you have planned.

7. Extra layers

If the weather turns bad, it’s always good to have some extra layers in case you get wet or cold. A couple of extra pairs of socks and underwear; shirts and thermals; as well as beanies and gloves can save your life in an emergency. Merino wool is a trending material lately – for many reasons – but it can be expensive, so standard wool (or cotton) is always a good choice.

8. Lighters

What would a camping trip be without a nice campfire? If you plan to make a fire, make sure you have a couple of lighters or matches, a safe area to start it, and some water nearby to put it out.

To start a fire, it’s best to start with small pieces of wood or bark (especially birch) and newspaper, or fire sticks.

9. Pocketknife

A good pocketknife – particularly one with multiple tools – comes in handy in a multitude of situations: including cutting, cooking, repairing, and much more. Make sure the cutting edge of the blade is 7.62 cm or less to ensure legality.

10. String/Rope

There are almost unlimited uses for string or rope. Whether you’re out on an adventure and need to tie something to your bag, or simply need to tie up a tarp to stay dry, string or rope can save the day.

It’s best to learn a couple of simple knot-tying techniques as well, especially if you plan on using a tarp.

This list might not be completely exhaustive for all camping plans, but it covers the most important bits. Some other key items include: a portable power bank, icebox, head torch, whistle, compass, map, satellite phone, speaker, bug spray, suncream, towel, sunglasses, axe, and cap.

Verona, Italy ­– the Romeo and Juliet experience

Is there a better love story than Romeo and Juliet? Probably not. A visit to Verona could be one of the most classically romantic places to visit, even if Romeo and Juliet – who aren’t real – never strolled through the market squares and baroque buildings.

What makes this place special isn’t the Shakesperean tales. Verona is a beautiful city with a good balance of restaurants, architecture, and things to do. It also isn’t as crowded as some of the bigger Italian destinations like Rome and Venice.

Some of the best things to do include watching an opera at Verona Arena, navigating the maze at Giardino Giusti, and visiting Juliet’s House – if you can avoid the crowds. There are also picturesque market squares, elegant restaurants with candle-lit dinners, and bars with endless Italian wine.

Bruges, Belgium – canals and classic architecture

Bruges might not have the literary history of love stories like Verona, but it has plenty of romantic charm within its walls and canals. The city is just a short ride from Brussels and has its own fairytale story to tell.

If you’ve ever seen the movie, In Bruges, you know that Bruges fits the mould of the perfect city break for the right type of person. Those that enjoy canals, churches, and strolling through alleyways marvelling at old buildings will fit right in.

Some of the best things to do are delight in Belgian chocolate, stop at Lover’s Bridge and Lake of Love, cruise the canals, and tour the streets in a horse-drawn carriage.

Porto, Portugal – port and river cruises

Porto is a place of discovery. Every place you go, you can discover something truly amazing. The city has many unique romantic qualities that you can’t quite find in other parts of Europe – the McDonald’s could be one of the most beautiful in the world.

Most days in Porto begin by the Douro River. Here, you can stroll or take a boat ride to see the city from a different viewpoint. Ljubljana, Slovenia – diverse wine culture and local delicacies

This city might not have the same iconic attractions or food as other European counterparts, but the meaning of its name is ‘the beloved’ – and it’s known in some circles as the city of love.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany – medieval charm in an old, walled town

It would be hard to compile a list of romantic cities without including one from Germany’s Romantic Road. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is on the famous road, and it’s one of the best-preserved walled towns in Germany.

What used to be filled with barns and farm animals now consists of hotels and year-round Christmas markets. Even though the town can get quite touristy, it’s still the one of the most charming medieval towns. Walking the walls is one of the best ways to experience the beautiful buildings, with a preferred view from above.

You won’t find many adrenaline-pumping activities in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It’s a place where you can feel like you’ve gone back in time. You can stroll the streets, visit the amazing shops, and if you want to try something a bit different, you can try the Night Watchman Tour.

Bath, England – historic roman culture close to home

If you fancy a romantic city break but don’t want to catch a flight, you could venture out to Bath for a romantic getaway that’s just a train ride away. The city has plenty to see, including the iconic Roman Baths and beautiful architecture. But there’s more to Bath than that.
