<p><strong>First time camper? Don’t get caught out with an error that could easily have been avoided, by following this advice from Michael Gaston from Cotswold Outdoor.</strong></p>

<div class="wp-block-group"><div class="wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained">
<p>Camping for the first time should be exciting: a chance to get outdoors, switch off, and break away from the usual routine. But a few overlooked basics can quickly turn the experience into a frustrating one. Most first-time camping mistakes are not major disasters, but small, avoidable issues that build up over the course of a trip.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>
</div></div>

<p><strong>Treating camping gear as “plug and play”</strong><br>One of the biggest mistakes first-time campers make is assuming new equipment will just work straight out of the bag. Tents, poles, and sleep systems often require some level of setup knowledge that is not obvious at first glance. A classic issue is arriving at a campsite and trying to assemble a tent for the first time, often in fading light or bad weather. What feels like a simple task at home becomes stressful outdoors.</p>

<p><strong>How to avoid it</strong><br>Always do a full “at-home test” before your trip. Pitch your tent in the garden or a park, inflate your mat, and set up your sleeping bag. This helps you understand how everything fits together and highlights missing pieces or faults early, not at 10pm in the rain.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>Choosing a tent that’s too small</strong><br>Tent sizing is one of the most misunderstood parts of camping. A “two-person” tent is not designed for comfort, it is designed for two people lying shoulder to shoulder with minimal extra space. This often leads to cramped conditions, nowhere to store bags, and a general feeling of being boxed in. The lack of space also means it&#8217;s harder to separate wet and dry clothing/equipment so everything ends up wet.</p>

<p><strong>How to avoid it</strong><br>Use the N+1 rule. If there are two of you, choose a three-person tent. If there are three people, consider a four-person tent. The extra space is not a luxury – it makes a huge difference to sleep quality and organisation inside the tent. Also consider how far you are carrying your gear. If weight matters, balance comfort with portability.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Other-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-40900" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Other-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Other-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Other-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Other-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Other-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Other.jpg 2000w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Underestimating condensation</strong><br>Many first-time campers think their tent is leaking when they wake up to damp walls or a wet sleeping bag. In most cases, it is not rain getting in, but condensation building up overnight. This happens especially in single-skin tents or poorly ventilated setups.</p>

<p><strong>How to avoid it</strong><br>Choose a double-walled tent with an inner and outer layer. Keep ventilation points open where possible, even in cooler conditions. Understanding this issue in advance avoids unnecessary panic and gear blame.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>Relying on a sleeping bag alone</strong><br>A very common misconception is that a good sleeping bag is enough to keep you warm. In reality, most sleeping bag temperature ratings assume you are using an insulated sleeping mat underneath you. Without that barrier, the cold ground will pull heat away from your body all night.</p>

<p><strong>How to avoid it</strong><br>Think in terms of a sleep system, not just a bag. Pair your sleeping bag with a sleeping mat that has a decent R-value (around 4 is a good benchmark). Even budget combinations of bag plus mat will outperform an expensive bag used on its own. You should also invest in a liner for hygiene and added warmth.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>Pitching in the wrong location</strong><br>Where you pitch your tent has a bigger impact than most people expect. A poor spot can lead to water pooling, wind exposure, or even damage to your gear. Beginners often choose convenience over suitability, which can cause problems overnight.</p>

<p><strong>How to avoid it</strong><br>Look for flat, slightly elevated ground. Avoid dips or depressions where water could collect, and make sure your entrance is on the &#8216;lee&#8217; side (out of the wind).&nbsp;Check above for loose branches, and be mindful of wind direction. If there is no wind when you arrive, look at trees or grass patterns to understand how air moves across the area.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>Going to bed cold</strong><br>One of the simplest but most overlooked mistakes is getting into your sleeping bag already cold. Your gear is working to maintain heat, not generate it.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>How to avoid it</strong><br>Warm up before getting into bed. A short walk or a few simple movements can help. Some campers also use a bottle filled with warm water placed inside the sleeping bag to create initial warmth. Small actions like this can completely change your night. <a href="https://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">www.cotswoldoutdoor.com</a></p>

<p></p>

<p><strong>Summer’s here and our thoughts are turning to holidays. It’s not long until the kids finish school for the big break, so now’s a good time to be pulling out the suitcases and checking they’re still good to go.</strong></p>

<p>If you need to upgrade your luggage because it’s past its best, or simply because you fancy a change then there’s a few features to look out for.</p>

<p>Does the case have wheels? Most do these days, but spinner wheels are a cut above. It means they swivel 360°, which is a gamechanger when it comes to rushing through an airport. A telescopic handle also makes life so much easier, as do TSA locks, which mean officials can open your case if necessary without trashing it.</p>

<p>Inside, pockets are essential for separating out small items such as jewellery, while compression straps hold clothing in place. Individual top and bottom compartments keep shoes and clothes apart, and if the case is extendable, then you’ll have room to pack those souvenirs for the journey home.</p>

<p>On short trips consider luggage size. If you’re not paying for hold luggage then the bag must fit under the seat on budget airlines, to avoid a charge – and cabin cases too have limits.</p>

<p>No air travel, no size problem. There’s a gorgeous selection of holdalls and backpacks available that are just perfect for a few days away – and you can use them in your day to day, which is a big bonus!</p>

<p>Read on for our round-up of the best bags and suitcases for successful holiday travel this summer.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1-1-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-40471" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1-1-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/1-1.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="https://www.rockluggage.com/products/sunwave-suitcase-large-peach">Rock Sunwave Large Suitcase in Peach</a>, £110</h2>

<p>The sunny shade of this suitcase screams summer and it’s large enough for all the family’s essentials. It’s also expandable, which increases the capacity from 120L to 136L, so there’s plenty of space to take home a bottle of the local brew or those must-have mementos.</p>

<p>Inside, there’s packing straps on one side along with a zipped pocket to keep small items safe, while on the other there’s a zipped divider and a separate large mesh pocket.</p>

<p>The outer is made from tough polypropylene, which is impact-resistant and built to last. There’s a TSA lock for peace of mind, a telescopic handle and eight spinner wheels, so even when it’s full, moving it is a breeze.</p>

<p>Also available in small and medium versions, or as a set of three. There’s also a wide choice of colours, including bright pink, light blue, lilac and a more sedate charcoal.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/2-1-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-40472" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/2-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/2-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/2-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/2-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/2-1-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/2-1.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="https://itluggage.com/products/eco-protect-medium-plus-elephant-skin">It luggage Eco Protect Medium Plus in Elephant Skin</a>, £60</h2>

<p>We love that the Eco-Protect is made from at least 70% recycled materials, so this suitcase is sustainable as well as stylish and practical.</p>

<p>It has eight 360° wheels for maximum manoeuvrability, a telescopic handle, and an extra grab handle on the top, which is incredibly helpful for dragging the suitcase from the baggage carousel.</p>

<p>There’s also a TSA lock and the case is expandable, with a total capacity of 104L, enough for two weeks in the sun.</p>

<p>Inside there’s compression straps on one side to keep everything in place and the other is separated by a zipped divider that incorporates a mesh pocket, so you can see at a glance what’s inside.</p>

<p>It weighs 4.14kg when empty and the soft grey shade goes with everything, so will complement your existing luggage collection. Also available in cabin size and large, or as a three-piece set.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/3-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-40473" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/3-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/3-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/3-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/3-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/3-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/3.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The padded top handles are comfy to hold, and the detachable cross-body strap gives an alternative carry option. A contrasting gold zip fastening, coupled with faux suede tassel zip pulls and gold metal hardware add to the luxe vibe. There’s even a matching luggage tag and the option to personalise the bag with your initials in a choice of embroidery colours.</p>

<p>This stylish yet practical weekend bag is also available in taupe, rose, cherry and black, and measures 50cm W x 28cm H x 25cm D.&nbsp;</p>

This is especially handy if you’re on a late flight and want to get to those night essentials, such as your toothbrush and PJs without having to unpack everything. It’s also invaluable for business trips, as you can keep cables and work essentials together, doing away with the need to carry a separate work bag. The case is made from durable polypropylene and features spinner wheels, a TSA lock, retractable main handle and two grab handles – one on the top and one on the side. Internally, the bottom section has luggage straps to keep contents secure, while the upper section features a divider with zipped mesh pocket. And there’s two extra zipped pockets in the top-opening part of the suitcase. It also has a capacity of 64L and is available in terracotta.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="https://eu.wandrd.com/en-gb/products/transit-travel-backpack?variant=42916350689322">Wandrd Transit Travel Backpack 35L</a>, £263</h2>

<p>This is the perfect travel companion if you want to holiday light but want masses of features in your luggage. And there’s no need to check it into the hold as the Wandrd Transit Travel Backpack is carry-on size.</p>

<p>We’re of the opinion you can never have too many pockets. Who wants to be searching through clothes for earbuds, cables, chargers or snacks? With this backpack you don’t have to. There’s a separate laptop compartment, space for drink bottles, pen holders, a secure pocket for your passport, and even a hidden pocket for an Airtag.</p>

<p>The bag opens on three sides like a suitcase for ease of packing and unpacking, but there’s also the option to access contents from each side. Foam-moulded shoulder straps and a structured back panel ensure the backpack is comfortable to wear and it’s weather-resistant. It’s expandable, with a maximum capacity of 35L – that’s more than enough space for three to five days away. Also available in a 45L version and in a green colourway.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2000" height="1125" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/6-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-40476" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/6-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/6-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/6-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/6-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/6-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/6.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="https://www.saramiller.london/products/green-birds-cabin-case-1">Sara Miller Green Birds Cabin Case</a>, £159</h2>

<p>The bird motif and colours on this suitcase are so vibrant and fun, they have already put us in a holiday mood! Just look at the engraved Sara Miller London zip pulls, a gold logo on the front and gold bird emblem on the back.</p>

<p>But this case is not only beautiful, it’s practical too. Spinner wheels and a retractable handle ensure optimal manoeuvrability, while the TSA lock means you don’t have to worry about security.</p>

<p>Inside, the lining continues the leaf pattern on dark grey fabric. Both the top and bottom sections feature zipped dividers and a combination of zipped and elasticated pockets, so there’s lots of space to separate out smaller items. The bottom section also incorporates compression straps to keep clothing in place.</p>

<p>It has a capacity of 29L, so enough for a long weekend or even a week if you pack strategically, and it’s designed to fit with Ryanair’s cabin bag requirements.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/7-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-40477" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/7-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/7-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/7-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/7-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/7-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/7.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Travelling light is a breeze with this wheeled rucksack. The 35L capacity means there’s enough space to pack for a few days away, and the lightweight polyester fabric means it’s not going to be too heavy to carry.</p>

<p>There’s a front pocket for essentials such as your phone and passport, a separate laptop pocket, and a main compartment. There’s also elasticated mesh pockets on the side of the rucksack that are big enough for a water bottle and snacks, while compression straps not only keep everything tight, but offer extra security across the main zip fastenings.</p>

<p>The rear pocket opens to reveal padded shoulder straps, and this panel folds down, covering the wheels and cushioning your back. There’s a grab handle on the top and another on the bottom, while a top pocket opens to reveal a telescopic handle for use in conjunction with the wheels.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/8-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-40478" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/8-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/8-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/8-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/8-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/8-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/8.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="https://www.antler.co.uk/products/icon-stripe-cabin-suitcase-mist-blue">Antler Icon Stripe Cabin Case in Mist Blue</a>, £185</h2>

<p>This polycarbonate cabin case has a 38.4L capacity, and is designed to fit the luggage requirements of European airlines.</p>

<p>We love the pale blue colourway, and the iconic Antler logo on the front. The spinner wheels mean the case is easy to move on hard floors and carpet, while the multi-height telescopic handle boasts a comfort grip that’s easy on the hands.</p>

<p>There’s a handle on the top and another on the side, so grabbing your case from the overhead locker is simple; there’s also a TSA lock for security. Inside, the bottom section features compression straps and a zipped pocket for small items. The top section has a zipped divider incorporating two mesh pockets so you can see contents at a glance.</p>

<p>Available in seven other shades, including moorland pink, taupe and buckthorn red.</p>

<p>Industry experts have compared 5,000 travel insurance premiums across five popular tourist destinations close to near geopolitical hotspots, revealing which countries have seen the biggest price increases over the past year.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-89 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex">
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">THE FINDINGS</h2>

<p>Prices in Turkey have been affected the most despite it traditionally being considered one of the most popular and cost-effective destinations for UK holidaymakers over recent years. Jumping to 46% over the last 12 months, average premiums have risen from £40.56 to £59.19.</p>
</div>

<p>Holidaymakers travelling to Bulgaria are also seeing a sharp rise, with prices up 19%, possibly down to its proximity to Ukraine. Meanwhile, premiums for Cyprus have increased by 6%, Egypt by 4% and Poland by 8%.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/TURKEY-2-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-40288" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/TURKEY-2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/TURKEY-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/TURKEY-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/TURKEY-2-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/TURKEY-2-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/TURKEY-2.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>How was the data compiled? Insurers regularly reassess risk when global tensions rise, particularly in destinations close to areas where travel complications might become more likely. Destinations situated close to areas experiencing heightened tensions – such as Iran and Ukraine – could see premiums shift as insurers reassess the likelihood of travel disruption, delays or emergency evacuation should issues escalate.</p>

<p>“Travel insurance prices change constantly as insurers respond to global events, the number of claims made and healthcare costs,” explains Helen. “Even if a destination remains popular despite its proximity to ongoing conflict, premiums can rise when the wider region becomes more uncertain. Travellers and holidaymakers shouldn’t assume last year’s prices will still apply and make sure they’re comparing policies carefully, rather than opting for the cheapest option, as cover can vary significantly. It’s also sensible to arrange insurance as soon as a trip is booked, check government travel advice before departure, and ensure any medical conditions are fully declared.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/CYPRUS-1-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-40290" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/CYPRUS-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/CYPRUS-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/CYPRUS-1-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/CYPRUS-1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/CYPRUS-1-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/CYPRUS-1.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<div class="wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-90 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex">
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">WILL I BE FULLY COVERED?</h2>

<p>“Travel disruption insurance can also be useful as it covers a wider range of issues while travelling,” Helen continues. “But it’s important to remember that travel insurance won’t provide cover if the foreign office advises against travel to that region – and most travel insurance policies won&#8217;t cover war-related incidents. It&#8217;s crucial for holidaymakers to check what is and isn&#8217;t covered on their policy and add any extras or specialised cover they might need.”</p>

<p><strong>Unsure on travel insurance? You&#8217;re not alone. Read on for advice based on real life customer enquiries, cultural shifts and trends, courtesy of travel insurer, <a href="http://www.coverforyou.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CoverForYou</a>.</strong></p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">If I keep quiet about a medical condition it won’t cost as much</h2>

<p>Wrong: keeping quiet is often the major mistake travellers make when buying travel insurance. It’s really important that all pre-existing medical conditions are declared when you’re purchasing insurance. If you don’t, your entire policy could be invalid or cancelled, any claims rejected, or not paid in full.  Declare or beware!</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Buying travel insurance can go at the bottom of my ‘to do’ list</h2>

<p>Don&#8217;t do this: buy it at the same time as booking your trip. You’ll be covered for things that go wrong before you even board a plane, train or ship. You could get ill and no longer being able to travel. Someone you’re travelling with is ill so you would rather not go alone; or your trip gets cancelled, amongst others. Consider buying an annual multi-trip policy. That way you’re covered for as many trips as you’re planning to take in a year without having to sign up each time. It can sometimes work out cheaper, too.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">I’ll just buy the cheapest cover</h2>

<p>Don’t just be driven by price. Instead make sure the policy covers what you need. Why? It could end up saving you thousands in the long run! Think about what you’re likely to be doing on your trip and who you’re travelling with, to make sure you’re properly covered. Remember: cutting corners to save a few pounds is never a good option. Medical costs can be extortionate, especially if you’re heading to the US.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/2-8-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-39679" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/2-8-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/2-8-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/2-8-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/2-8-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/2-8-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/2-8.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Discounted travel insurance means I’ll save money</h2>

<p>Discounts aren’t always what they seem. To get the best value, make sure the discount applies to the entire policy. That includes costs to cover pre-existing medical conditions, or add-ons like trip disruption cover – and not just the basic policy. If the discount only applies to the basic and you’re paying full price on the extras you need, chances are the discount shrinks to pretty much none at all. Shop around and read the fine print, to make sure that 20% discount really is a 20% saving on your wallet.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">All the gadgets I take are covered by my policy</h2>

<p>Packing your phone, iPad, laptop and headphones is second nature to most. But many travel insurance policies don’t include cover for gadgets as standard. If your gadgets aren’t insured elsewhere, you’ll often need to add this as optional cover. Almost all policies limit cover for high value pieces such as engagement rings, usually around the region of £100 to £250 per item, or per insured.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How does the Iran war affect my travel insurance?</h2>

<p>&#8220;We expect to see the cost of travel insurance rising, especially for travel outside Europe,&#8221; says CoverForYou Managing Director Alan Dean. &#8220;This is due to a greater risk you&#8217;ll need to claim for cancelling your flight, and increased costs when you do, along with an increased likelihood of delayed flights and curtailed trips.</p>

<p>&#8220;In the short term, we&#8217;re also seeing reduced availability of cover for destinations that rely heavily on flights routing via the Middle East. This could change while talks take place over the next few weeks, and, if an end to the war is agreed, flights to this region could return to normal. It’s very hard to predict at this early stage, so erring on the side of caution is strongly advised.</p>

<p>&#8220;Given this, we expect the cost of travel insurance to also increase because of higher cancellation risk (changes in FCDO advice) and cost (we expect to see the cost of holidays increase) and in trip disruption (an increase in delayed flights and trip curtailment costs).”</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Reader offer!</h2>

<p>CoverForYou are offering an exclusive 20% discount code for Checklist readers on their travel insurance with the code <strong>VDM6BLVYZ3</strong>. Valid until 31 August 2026, it covers annual multi-trip or single-trip policies. These must be purchased directly from the CoverForYou website and cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer.</p>

Foodies should make a point of trying the <a href="https://arranscheeseshop.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">local cheese</a> and visiting <a href="https://www.arranwhisky.com/our-distillery" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lochranza Distillery</a>, one of two whisky distilleries on the island.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Northern Ireland</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/18-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-39650" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/18-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/18-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/18-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/18-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/18-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/18.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>This year is the 40th anniversary of <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/northern-ireland/giants-causeway" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Giant’s Causeway</a> being designated a Unesco World Heritage Site, so what better time to visit? The unique natural landscape is formed from thousands of hexagonal stones dating back 60 million years. Not only do you get to see it, but you get to experience it, walking across the basalt columns next to the sea.</p>

<p>Afterwards, head down the Causeway Coastal Route to discover possibly the most famous ship in the world at <a href="https://www.titanicbelfast.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Titanic Belfast</a> and see the story of the doomed vessel brought to life through interactive exhibitions.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/15-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-39651" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/15-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/15-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/15-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/15-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/15-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/15.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Where to stay:</strong> <a href="https://www.ballygallycastlehotel.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ballygally Castle Hotel</a> on the Causeway Coastal Route is ideally placed for visiting Giant’s Causeway and Belfast. Rooms start at £200 per night for a family of four over May half-term.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lake District</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/17-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-39652" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/17-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/17-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/17-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/17-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/17-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/17.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Experience the water, the mountains and the lush green countryside of the <a href="https://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lake District National Park</a> from your base at Bowness. Take a boat trip around Windermere – the largest natural lake in England – or try your hand at kayaking, paddleboarding and wild swimming. There’s hikes to suit all ages and abilities, not to mention the highest mountains in England, including Scafell Pike and Skiddaw.</p>

<p>Little ones will love <a href="https://worldofbeatrixpotter.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction</a>, and you can even visit the <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/lake-district/hill-top" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">author’s home</a> and the inspiration for her books. Don’t miss a visit to Grasmere (around 25 minutes drive away) for its world-famous <a href="https://www.grasmeregingerbread.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gingerbread</a> and for <a href="https://wordsworth.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dove Cottage</a> and museum, once home to poet William Wordsworth.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/19-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-39653" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/19-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/19-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/19-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/19-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/19-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/19.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Kids spending too long on their devices? Ditch the screens and get out and about – for free! Whether your kids are arty, sporty or budding palaeontologists, there are plenty of ways to spend quality time together without breaking the bank. Need a little inspiration? Here are 10 fun and free ways you&#8217;ll all love.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Swap screens for a stroll</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/den-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38636" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/den-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/den-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/den-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/den-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/den-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/den.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>This may take persuasion, but getting out in nature with the family is a great way to pass on healthy habits and improve mental health. You can find lots of beautiful family-friendly trails on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/walking/family-friendly-walks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The National Trust</a>&nbsp;website, with many being suitable for pushchairs and offering play areas or woodland for den building along the way. Use a step-counting app to keep tech-head teens satisfied too!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Join the hunt</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/geo-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38637" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/geo-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/geo-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/geo-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/geo-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/geo-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/geo.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>If your kids are mad for treasure hunts, nudge them outdoors by joining the biggest hunt of them all — geocaching. Unfamiliar with the craze? A ‘geocache’ is a small waterproof container people hide which contains a logbook to sign and small trinkets to swap. There are over 189,000 hidden across the UK, and you can get involved by creating a free account on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.geocaching.com/play" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">geocaching</a>&nbsp;website. Ready, steady, geo.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>See a show for free</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/concert-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38638" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/concert-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/concert-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/concert-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/concert-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/concert-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/concert.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Sky-high prices for concerts, theatre, and sports events mean there are often not enough bums to fill seats. But here’s a tip: anyone receiving cost-of-living support or working as a teacher, volunteer, NHS or charity worker can actually bag complimentary tickets to some of the UK’s biggest events by simply registering at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ticketsforgood.com/uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tickets For Good</a>. The entertainment world will be your oyster.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Visit the past</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/naturalhistory-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38640" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/naturalhistory-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/naturalhistory-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/naturalhistory-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/naturalhistory-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/naturalhistory-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/naturalhistory.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Trustees of NHM</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p>Britain boasts some of the finest museums in the world, so if you fancy exploring the past with your brood, you will be spoilt for choice. Most of the grand dames, including the<a href="https://www.britishmuseum.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;British Museum</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nhm.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Natural History Museum</a>, are free to enter and offer hands-on activities to keep kids engaged. Take a picnic to swerve the pricey cafe costs too.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Check out some street art</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/banksy-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38641" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/banksy-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/banksy-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/banksy-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/banksy-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/banksy-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/banksy.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>If you have a Banksy in the family, winter is a great time to grab a hot chocolate and take in some street art before the crowds descend. Places like Manchester’s Northern Quarter and Banksy’s hometown of Bedminster in Bristol are great postcodes for urban art critics to explore. You may even be able to find a free walking tour on websites such as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freetour.com/">FreeTour.com</a>.</p>

<p>If your wheels are in hibernation, it’s time to wake them up. Obviously cycling with younger children is best kept to safer traffic-free routes, but you will find plenty of doable options listed at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cyclinguk.org/family">Cycling UK</a>, along with tips on everything from teaching your toddler to master a balance bike to more challenging routes for teenagers. <p>It doesn’t matter if you have a sprawling back garden or window box; little green fingers will love every opportunity to get dirty and prepare for spring. Make bird feeders by coating toilet paper rolls in peanut butter or lard and rolling them in bird seed; prune dormant shrubs, or plant hardy vegetable seeds on your windowsill to enjoy a longer growing season.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dobbies.com/events" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dobbies Garden Centres</a>&nbsp;also run free monthly Little Seedling workshops for kids, so check them out.</p>

<p>From The Shard to The London Eye, views of the capital often come with a hefty fee — yet you can book free tickets to soak up the same iconic skyline at&nbsp;<a href="https://skygarden.london/booking/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sky Garden</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://horizon22.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Horizon 22</a>, London’s highest free viewing platform. If it rains, you will feel all the more Bear Grylls for it.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Hunt for fossils</strong></h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/fossile-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38646" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/fossile-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/fossile-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/fossile-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/fossile-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/fossile-390x220.jpg 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/fossile.jpg 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Finally, remember that UK beaches are not just for sandcastles and rock pooling — they are also brilliant for fossil hunting! Make like Mary Anning and head to fossil spots like Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, Whitby, the Isle of Wight, or the chalk cliffs of Sussex and Kent to see what you can discover. Shark teeth, ammonites and belemnites will be a proud inspiration for many show-and-tells to come.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Brussels</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/BRUSSELS-1024x576.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-38150" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/BRUSSELS-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/BRUSSELS-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/BRUSSELS-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/BRUSSELS-1536x864.webp 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/BRUSSELS-390x220.webp 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/BRUSSELS.webp 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Visit Brussels/Eric Danhier</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p>First on the list when it comes to the best place to consider is Brussels. The Belgian capital has 83 festive activities spread across markets, skating rinks, and holiday events, giving tourists plenty of ways to enjoy the season. Moving around the city is just as enjoyable, as the weather stays mild, with temperatures around 9°C in December and with approximately two days of snow. The city’s also a less expensive getaway compared to other Western capitals, costing around a reasonable £85.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Paris</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/PARIS-1024x576.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-38151" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/PARIS-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/PARIS-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/PARIS-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/PARIS-1536x864.webp 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/PARIS-390x220.webp 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/PARIS.webp 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Paris comes in at second, offering more than 200 Christmas activities across the city, far more than any other holiday destination. Locals here organise 20 Christmas villages and set up 13 ice skating rinks, with pleasant December temperatures (around 10°C) making outdoor attractions even more fun. Despite its pricey reputation, daily expenses in Paris are low as well — about £76 when you combine hotel and meals.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Liverpool</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LIVERPOOL-1024x576.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-38153" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LIVERPOOL-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LIVERPOOL-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LIVERPOOL-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LIVERPOOL-1536x864.webp 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LIVERPOOL-390x220.webp 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/LIVERPOOL.webp 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Liverpool ranks third in the survey, with one of the most festive atmospheres in Britain. The city puts up Christmas decorations early — on or around 15 November — offering more than 100 holiday activities across its neighbourhoods. December brings around mild 10°C temperatures and zero snow days, meaning outdoor festivities can go ahead without the weather getting in the way. Best of all, Liverpool is also noticeably safer for families travelling with kids.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Zurich</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/ZURICH-1024x576.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-38154" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/ZURICH-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/ZURICH-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/ZURICH-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/ZURICH-1536x864.webp 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/ZURICH-390x220.webp 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/ZURICH.webp 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>© Petra Muster/Zürich Tourismus</strong></figcaption></figure>

<p>Zurich comes next as the most affordable destination in the top five at just under £76 for food and lodging — significantly less than what other places charge. Another Zurich advantage is the real winter weather, as an average of 14 snow days in December gives the city a classic Christmassy feel. You and your family won’t have to worry about safety either, as Zurich has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe (77/100 safety index).</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Manchester</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/MANCHESTER-1024x576.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-38155" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/MANCHESTER-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/MANCHESTER-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/MANCHESTER-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/MANCHESTER-1536x864.webp 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/MANCHESTER-390x220.webp 390w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/MANCHESTER.webp 2000w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Manchester rounds up our five suggestions as another British alternative for around the festive season. The city organises up to 90 activities, similar to neighbouring Liverpool – among them are 10 Christmas markets that keep the holiday spirit alive. Decorations here go up on 7 November, with the early start also helping to explain the city&#8217;s popularity, as more than half a million people have already looked up Manchester holiday options online.</p>

<p>“What I take to keep my locks looking great depends on what hairstyle I’m rocking, but one thing I always pack is a product with anti frizz ingredients to avoid sun damage to my hair, as well as providing it with nutrients. At the moment, my go-to is <a href="https://www.charlottemensah.com/shop/manketti-hair-oil" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Charlotte Mensah Manketti Hair Oil</a> (£52) which is a fabulous multi-tasker.”</p>

<p>“I’m careful to protect my skin in the sun and <a href="https://www.theshadesofmelanin.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Shades of Melanin</a> is an amazing brand I can’t do without. Black girls need sunscreen too!&nbsp;I also hate getting bitten by mozzies, so reach for the strong stuff: <a href="https://www.blacks.co.uk/br:lifesystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lifesystems&nbsp;Expedition MAX DEET Mosquito Repellent</a> (£7.99). Then at bedtime, when I want something softer I use <a href="https://avon.uk.com/products/skin-so-soft-original-dry-oil-spray-bonus-size-250ml" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Avon Skin So Soft Original Dry Oil</a> (£8). It smells gorgeous!”</p>

<p>“I have family homes on both Grenada and Saint Lucia, which I’ve visited since childhood. I escape there whenever I can, so when case space is at a premium, there’s a few bits and pieces I fall back on. A leopard print scarf is a must, whether I use it to cover my hair or wear as a sarong or a scarf.&nbsp;I also keep my beachwear pretty simple. I love high-waisted, wide-leg bikini bottoms as they cover a multitude of sins, then I just toss in a matching bikini top and colourful cover-up dress.”</p>

<p>“I’ve tried all sorts of things to beat feeling rubbish in different time zones, but am yet to find the secret formula. If I can’t sleep, I might pick up a book. I recently bought Awakened, the debut novel by Kelechi Okafor. It’s a dystopian story, so I’m not sure if it is helping me get any sleep!”</p>

<p>Looking for destinations to escape the crowds when planning your next adventure? Europe’s full of hidden gems just waiting to be explored, with hiring a car the best way to see them, as many of them are a little bit off the beaten path. Here, Ed Sharp, Head of <a href="https://www.travelsupermarket.com/en-gb/car-hire" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Car Hire at TravelSupermarket</a>, shares some of the most underrated holiday destinations well worth adding to your bucket list.</p>

<p><strong>Picos de Europa, Spain</strong></p>

<p>For a getaway far from bustling cities, Picos de Europa in Northern Spain’s a must. Spanning Asturias, Cantabria, and León, the National Park offers limestone peaks, deep gorges, and remote villages, making it a perfect option for adventure lovers. Public transport’s limited and the region vast, so a car’s best to navigate the winding mountain roads.</p>

<p><em>How to get there:</em>&nbsp;Fly directly to Santander Airport from most major UK airports, then drive 90 minutes to reach your destination.</p>

<p><strong>Alentejo, Portugal</strong></p>

<p>With rolling hills, historic towns, and Roman ruins, the Alentejo region in Southern Portugal’s a picturesque holiday destination. Here you can explore cultural sites, wineries, and the Atlantic coastline at your own pace.<strong> </strong>Grab a car to visit highlights such as Évora, Monsaraz, Estremoz, and the Alentejo coast.</p>

<p><em>How to get there:</em> Fly directly to Lisbon Airport, then it’s just over an hour to Évora, the heart of the region.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/GREECE-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-37366" srcset="https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/GREECE-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/GREECE-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/GREECE-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/GREECE-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://www.checklists.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/GREECE-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p><strong>Peloponnese, Greece</strong></p>

<p>One of Greece&#8217;s best-kept secrets is the Peloponnese peninsula. Connected to the mainland via the Corinth Canal and the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, this scenic region’s packed with ancient ruins, hidden beaches, and mountain villages. As expected, public transport’s sparse, and the best sites spread out, so they&#8217;re best explored at your leisure.</p>

<p><em>How to get there:</em>&nbsp;Fly to Athens, then drive 90 minutes to Nafplio – an ideal base for your trip.</p>

<p><strong>Dordogne, France</strong></p>

<p>If you want to feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale, a road trip here’s the one for you. This South West region, named after its winding river, is home to mediaeval castles, charming châteaux, and enchanting villages. Trust us&nbsp; you’ll love it.</p>

<p><em>How to get there:</em>&nbsp;Fly to Bergerac Airport (a 50 minute drive) or Bordeaux Airport (just under a two hour drive).</p>

<p><strong>Apuseni Mountains, Romania</strong></p>

<p>The Apuseni Mountains are located in a remote region of Transylvania. The best time to visit is between late May and September, when the weather is the most pleasant for hiking and other activities.&nbsp; The landscape boasts karst formations, caves, and traditional villages, with highlights including Scărișoara Ice Cave, Padiș Plateau, and the wooden churches of Maramureș.</p>

<p><em>How to get there:&nbsp;</em>Fly to Cluj-Napoca Airport, then drive two hours into the mountains.</p>

<p><strong>Western Fjords, Norway</strong></p>

<p>For breathtaking natural beauty, the Western Fjords of Norway offer towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, and glacial landscapes. The isolation of this region makes a road trip the best way to explore, especially along the scenic Atlantic Road.</p>

<p><em>How to get there:</em>&nbsp;Fly to Ålesund Airport, then drive 2.5 hours to Geiranger, one of the most spectacular fjord towns.</p>

<p><strong>The Azores, Portugal</strong></p>

<p>The Azores archipelago, located in the North Atlantic Ocean, is made up of nine volcanic islands offering geothermal wonders, lush greenery, and dramatic coastlines. São Miguel is the largest island and known as the “Green Island” due to its rolling hills and vibrant landscapes. With minimal tourist crowds, it’s a perfect summer escape.</p>

<p><em><strong>How to get there:</strong>&nbsp;</em>Fly to Ponta Delgada Airport on São Miguel Island, then rent a car to explore the island.</p>

<p><strong>Carinthia, Austria</strong></p>

<p>Carinthia, Austria’s southernmost and least densely populated state, is a paradise of gentle mountain peaks, pristine lakes, and alpine villages. It’s home to over 1,200 lakes — 200 of which are swimmable — making it an idyllic summer retreat.</p>

<p><em>How to get there:</em>&nbsp;Fly to Klagenfurt Airport, then drive 30 minutes to the region’s stunning lakes and mountains.</p>
