Paris comes in at second, offering more than 200 Christmas activities across the city, far more than any other holiday destination. Locals here organise 20 Christmas villages and set up 13 ice skating rinks, with pleasant December temperatures (around 10°C) making outdoor attractions even more fun. Despite its pricey reputation, daily expenses in Paris are low as well — about £76 when you combine hotel and meals.

Liverpool

Liverpool ranks third in the survey, with one of the most festive atmospheres in Britain. The city puts up Christmas decorations early — on or around 15 November — offering more than 100 holiday activities across its neighbourhoods. December brings around mild 10°C temperatures and zero snow days, meaning outdoor festivities can go ahead without the weather getting in the way. Best of all, Liverpool is also noticeably safer for families travelling with kids.

Zurich

Zurich comes next as the most affordable destination in the top five at just under £76 for food and lodging — significantly less than what other places charge. Another Zurich advantage is the real winter weather, as an average of 14 snow days in December gives the city a classic Christmassy feel. You and your family won’t have to worry about safety either, as Zurich has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe (77/100 safety index).

Manchester

Manchester rounds up our five suggestions as another British alternative for around the festive season. The city organises up to 90 activities, similar to neighbouring Liverpool – among them are 10 Christmas markets that keep the holiday spirit alive. Decorations here go up on 7 November, with the early start also helping to explain the city’s popularity, as more than half a million people have already looked up Manchester holiday options online.

The Northamptonshire circuit has dedicated family areas, last year it offered coding workshops, electric go-karts and sports zones. The Red Arrows offer even more spectacle with their fantastic flypasts. Last year, as well as the brilliant entertainment there were musical acts such as Rudimental and Voice UK Anne-Marie judge Anne Marie.

4. Spa, Belgium

The Walloon Spa-Francorchamps circuit is the fourth-best destination for F1 fans to visit! South of the village of Francorchamps, it has hosted 54 Grand Prix races and has a wide variety of grandstands, which makes it easy to see not only the race, but also the bright and beautiful surrounding landscape; the area is known for its wooded valleys and natural springs. We’ll leave you with one piece of advice, choose the grandstands on top of the Eau Rouge bend and we promise you won’t regret it.

5. Montreal, Canada

In the middle of the ranking, we find Montreal. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a 4.361km motor racing circuit in the Quebec region. It is the venue for the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix and has hosted the drivers 40 times. When not hosting the event, the circuit is a unique facility in the province of Quebec where cycling, inline skating and racing enthusiasts come to train. Surrounded by lush gardens and a wide range of artwork, the circuit is a pleasant and relaxing venue, a good place to take a stroll. This multi-purpose track also provides excellent views of Montreal, with its strategic location in the heart of the St. Lawrence River.

6. Budapest, Hungary

The beautiful city of Budapest secures the seventh position. The Hungaroring circuit, with 4.7 stars on Google, is 4.381 km lonng and has crowned two drivers in its 20-year history: both Nigel Mansell in 1992 and Michael Schumacher in 2001. In addition, the Williams F1 team and Scuderia Ferrari have also secured the Constructors’ Championship at the Hungaroring, Williams in 1996 and Ferrari in 2001, 2002, and 2004. We leave two stands where to have the best view: Gold Stand 4 is situated on the outside of the first corner of the circuit and some of the best views of the Hungaroring can be found in the final corner of the circuit. Silver 3 is an excellent choice for a first time visitor to the circuit, as the stands are elevated above the track, providing a great view of the last corners and the main straight.

7. São Paulo, Brazil

In Seventh place, we find São Paulo. With the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, also known as Interlagos and with a 4.6 star rating. It is a 4.309km circuit and was renamed in 1985 to honour Formula 1 driver José Carlos Pace, who died in a plane crash in 1977. Attached to its facilities is a go-kart circuit in honour of Ayrton Senna. The circuit runs counter-clockwise. Our advice for the grandstand: Situated at the start of the main straight at Interlagos, the covered Grandstand B is one of the best places to watch the action in Brazil. Grandstand B offers views of the long approach to the final corner, the pit lane entrance and some of the team garages, as well as the Formula 1 podium.

8. Barcelona, Spain

The eighth position goes to the legendary Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which has hosted 31 Grand Prix races, is 4.675km long and is a track of two halves: one consists almost entirely of a single straight, and the other is a tangle of tight corners. For some fun away from the race, the facilities at this fantastic venue include Rancho Rocco, an off-road motorbike track open to everyone from beginners to experts, and race fans can sign up for pit rides and autograph sessions.

9. Zandvoort, The Netherlands

In ninth place is Zandvoort in the Netherlands. The town of Zandvoort is situated on the dunes of the Dutch North Sea coast, half an hour west of the Dutch capital of Amsterdam, and the circuit itself is located right next to the beach. It held the first Grand Prix in 1950 and has hosted a total of 33, it is also the second home of Dutch world champion Max Verstappen. A curiosity about the circuit? It is British driver Jim Clark who has the most wins followed by his compatriot Jackie Stewart.

10. Melbourne, Australia

Securing the final place in our ranking is the city of Melbourne in Australia. The Albert Park Circuit uses sections of public road surrounding Melbourne’s Albert Park Lake and never fails to provide drama – notable incidents include Martin Brundle’s car being launched over David Coulthard’s McLaren in 1996 (Brundle’s car ended up in two pieces) and Ralf Schumacher’s car flying over Rubens Barrichello’s Ferrari in 2002. Fun fact? The Australian Grand Prix holds the record for the shortest F1 race – although the record in question was actually set in Adelaide, the previous home of the event. Torrential rain led to it being cancelled after 24 minutes and Ayrton Senna was declared the winner.

Every skiing country in the world does après slightly differently but one thing’s for certain: there’s guaranteed fun across the board.  

Checklist has joined forces with Powderhouse to pick out some of the best ski resorts to party at après, some of the big headliners where you’re guaranteed some fun. 

1. St Anton, Austria

There can be fewer more famous places in the world for après than the MooserWirt, an Austrian institution. Sitting just above the town on the Galzig piste, this place is heaving every afternoon with DJ, beers and shots of Jägermeister until 8pm (Powderhound tip: here’s a hotel behind it, so you can stay right at the heart of the action). Across the piste is the Krazy Kanguruh — again not for the faint-hearted. Both require a ski down to the town afterwards, when you can stop in at Basecamp and complete St Anton’s very own après-ski equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle. If you need something a little less rowdy, Heustadl is on the Blue 1 piste, or Anton Bar, at the base of the Galzig gondola, offer more laid-back options.

2. Val d’Isère, France

Top of the charts for its massively varied scene — most skiers will recognise the big names here even if they haven’t skied Val d’Isère. This resort was the site of the very first La Folie Douce, the open-air nightclub where the table stomping is in full swing every afternoon until 5pm. Situated at the top of La Dialle, although you can ski in, you can also get the lift back down. Then there’s Cocorico at the Rond Point des Pistes, another massive open-air party scene which kicks off slightly later in the afternoon with DJ and live band. Other (slightly quieter) institutions are the Pacific Bar, Le Bananas and the Moris Pub — one of the very first pubs to open in Val d’Isére. Later on the party moves to the infamous Dicks Tea Bar or the Underground Café.

3. Verbier, Switzerland

Rub shoulders with the rich and famous in Verbier. Negotiate the likes of Ice Cub (at Ruinettes) or the yurts of Bar 1936 before dropping down into the town to enjoy some chic après at Le Rouge at one end of the town or some rowdier fun at Pub Mont Fort at the other. Another old favourite is Fer à Cheval (Tip: free pizzas are handed out at après), or head to the central Farinet, which hosts live bands every night of the season. If your après antics take you as far as the Farm Club, Verbier’s long-standing nightclub, don’t forget your credit card — the Farm is renowned as one of the most expensive destinations in the Alps. 

4. Andermatt, Switzerland

A perhaps surprising entry, the freeride Mecca of Andermatt is sneaking its way into the après-ski charts. The resort has a special après-ski adapted coach on the railway taking skiers between the linked resorts of Sedrun and Disentis via the 3000m Overalp Pass (an overall journey time of an hour). Consumption of food and drink in the bar is mandatory, and (Tip: there’s an on-board DJ at weekends). In Andermatt itself, the arrival of La Vache — from Rob Sawyer, James Blunt, Lawrence Dallaglio and Carl Fogarty, the same team behind the Verbier restaurant — is shaking things up. Resident DJ is Konal Kirsten (from Chicago, London and Ibiza) with the likes of Seb Fontaine, Brandon Block, Toby Anstiss and Goldfish performing throughout the season. 

5. Whistler, Canada

North America isn’t known for its après scene, but Whistler is one of the exceptions with the Garibaldi Lift Company (GLC) topping the bill. Located just above the Whistler gondola building, you can enjoy a shot skis and beer on the terrace while watching skiers coming down the mountain (Tip: there’s a masseuse going from table to table at GLC, too). If you’re staying in Whistler’s Upper Village, Merlin’s, at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, is a great place to enjoy some end-of-day nachos. There are many other places to explore — Buffalo Bill’s with its a resident DJ and a great cocktail menu, the ubiquitous Irish pub, Dubh Linn Gate, serving up live music and Guinness and more pumping music at the Longhorn Saloon.

6. Aspen-Snowmass, Colorado

Surprisingly European in its approach to après, the residents of this town ski hard and party harder. Things kick off at Cloud Nine on Highlands, with a classic European open-air party, ski boot table dancing, champagne quaffing and live DJ. On Aspen Mountain, Little Nell this year launched “The Beach” at Sundeck —where skiers can enjoy drinks and snacks and live DJ while lounging on deckchairs. For a chic atmosphere, head to the Wet Deck at the W, Ajax Tavern at the Little Nell or Chica at the Little Nell Residences just next to the Silver Queen Gondola at the base of Aspen Mountain. (Tip: Ajax Tavern serves up unbeatable truffle fries.) Then there’s the Red Onion and Limelight Lounge — the latter des great pizzas after skiing. Later in the evening, Belly Up Aspen is an institution — the live music venue was founded in 2005 and still goes strong. Then there’s the Caribou Club and 7908 Aspen for a more chic vibe. 

7. Mayrhofen, Austria

Home of the Snowbombing festival, this town goes off at après, starting at the Pilzbar at the top of Penken cable car with its umbrella bar and terrace. Further down in the town is the Bruck n Stadl which regularly features international DJs and a crazy party vibe that seems unique to Austria. (Tip: for a unique vibe, try the White Lounge — a giant candlelit igloo where waiters skate around serving drinks.) There’s dancing on tables to classic tunes at the Ice Bar next to the Penken lift, while the Scotland Yard Pub enjoys a huge reputation as one of the best places to party in Austria. 

8. Alpe d’Huez, France

There’s more saxophones, dancers, DJs and fun from La Folie Douce where you can stomp in your ski boots until late into the afternoon before transferring to the Underground Bar in town. Known for its live sports, music and loyal clientele, this place is run by Brits and serves up reasonably priced drinks. Smithy’s Tavern is a favourite watering hole, and when the shadows have grown (very) long, revellers head downstairs to L’Igloo which stays open until 5.30am but probably best ditch your ski boots before that point. The Speakeasy Arena is known for its brilliantly eclectic and varied selection of music while Mo’s serves up cheesy choons at après for those who want to party hard. 

9. Cervinia, Italy

Several new hotels have opened this winter in this buzzy Italian resort that offers a cheaper view of the Matterhorn — likely to only increase the already well-established fun at après-ski. Grab beers by the pitcher at the Yeti or enjoy live music and terrace drinks at the Thistles Pub in the Dragon hotel which offers a homely vibe with its British pub décor. The Umbrella bar, right at the foot of the slopes, is a firm favourite with live music midweek, while the family-run Lino’s bar, opposite Cervinia’s ice rink, is known for its live music on Sundays. (Tip: if you like a G&T, the tiny Tasty bar on Cervinia’s main street has more than 500 different types of gin). Later in the night head to the Sound Club which has a great cocktail menu. 

10. Pas de la Casa, Andorra

The 210km Grandvalira attracts skiers for its low-VAT and duty-free prices, and while the après is lively at all the resorts, its Pas de le Casa that attracts the real party-hard crowd with almost too bars many to mention. The scene kicks off at the Coll Blanc, Kamikaze Surf bar and the Mazaya Igloo terrace. Pas 83 is great fun — a ski hire and storage location with a bar featuring live music and DJs (Top tip: if you store your skis here you’ll get a free drink every day). Free popcorn and shots are hounded out early at the London Underground, then there’s Costa Rodana, Paddy’s Bar, the Dubliner, an Irish bar split over two levels as well as sports on the big screen at the Milwaukee Bar.

1. Catania, Italy

The first Italian city in this top 10 list is the ancient port city of Sicily. Located on the east coast of Sicily, Catania can be found at the foot of the famous active volcano, Mt. Etna. A city steeped in history, Catania was founded in the 8th century BC by Chalcidian Greeks, before submitting to Roman rule in 263 BC.

Catania’s baroque “old town” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so for those eager to experience historical wonders will marvel whilst taking in sights such as the Palazzo Biscari and the Piazza del Duomo. 2. Nice, France

Nice, the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes is located on the famous French Rivera. A place where the sun seemingly always shines, Nice has everything you need for a great getaway – stunning beaches, sensational bars and restaurants, amazing views, and wonderful culture.

Looking for a party? Nice’s carnival is held every February, with an abundance of events – cold water swims, waiter races and ‘flower battles’ where up to 100,000 flowers are thrown. Dressing up is encouraged and it is great fun.  Nice is home to The Promenade des Anglais, one of France’s most iconic roads, where one can sit on one of the iconic blue chairs, read a book and watch the world go by.

Nice also offers sandy beaches, eateries, and an abundance of cultural and architectural offerings. Like Catania, the city was founded by the Greeks and turned into the go-to place for the 19th-century elite class of Europe attracting many famed artists including Henri Matisse. Visit the Musée Matisse to admire a huge collection of his work.

3. Granada, Spain

The mythical Spanish city of Granada is steeped in a concoction of cultures and religions, with glorious monuments and architecture. Granada was settled since ancient times by Iberians, Romans, and Visigoths and became a major city of Al-Andalus in the 11th century.

A calming, picturesque city, a stroll through the narrow streets of the Albaicín neighbourhood will lead you to witness one of the most incredible sights in the world, The Alhambra. One of Europe’s finest examples of Moorish architecture, the palace is a testament to Islamic architecture and its lasting influence on the continent. Awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1984, perched high up over the city, visitors bask in the sun as they stroll through the countless palace gardens, bath houses, and more.

Granada is one of the few remaining cities to serve free tapas. Many bars in the city will still provide tapas free of charge with any drink purchased.

4. Sevilla, Spain

A city steeped in similar history to Granada, Sevilla has a rich, multicultural history. Visiting the capital city of the Andalusia region of Southern Spain means discovering a very rich architectural and historical legacy, and diving into Spanish culture, sampling tapas, bullfighting, and more.

Bask in the sun and take a stroll through central Sevilla by the distinctively green Guadalquivir River, spanned by several ornate bridges connecting the city’s two halves.  

Visiting Seville’s Royal Alcázar Palace is a must for fans of Mudéjar architecture. Illumuniated by glorious sunshine, the structure showcases a grand, intriguing mix of Moorish and Mudéjar architecture, with looming archways and elegant internal courtyards.

5. Madeira, Portugal

No list of sunniest places in Europe could be complete without mentioning Madeira. Portugal’s southernmost inhabited location is one of the most popular destinations for UK tourists.

Very few destinations offer such a myriad of activities and pursuits. For adventure junkies and those keen to explore, hit the vera hiking paths that weave into the wooded mountains of the main island, with breath-taking views and one will encounter incredible native wildlife like the Madeiran wall lizard. For those after a more relaxing time, one can stick to the coast, where ocean-view bars and black-sand beaches, and kickback and relax under the sun. 

6. Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is a pearl of the Adriatic, a town located in Southern Croatia, it is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea.

Dubrovnik is one of the last remaining walled towns in the world. A walk through this sun-kissed town is a walk-through centuries of history. The stone walls hide beautiful buildings such as baroque St. Blaise Church, Renaissance Sponza Palace and more. It’s little wonder then, that in 1979 Dubrovnik was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, in recognition of its outstanding medieval architecture and fortified old town.

The uniqueness and visual appeal of Dubrovnik has seen the town become a prominent filming location for several high-profile TV series and films. Dubrovnik’s enclosed and walled location was the inspiration for the fictional city of King’s Landing and Qarth, two major cities in HBO’s Game of Thrones; as well as the location for Roger Corman’s 1964 war thriller The Secret Invasion.

7. Messina, Italy

Heading back to Italy, we have Messina. The third largest city on the island of Sicily, this sun-filled, harbour-city is an extremely popular tourist cruise ship destination.

It’s uniquely positioned geographical location means it offers a wide array of beautiful coastlines to choose from as soon as you dock in the town. Venture into the city and you’ll soon be in awe of the stunning locations and monuments, including the Norman built Cathedral and the Piazza del Duomo, numerous bell and clock towers, and Messina’s regional museum. The museum houses three sections – the painting gallery, sculpture collection, and archaeological section – all contain a selection of significant historical pieces.

8. Marseille, France

Located between the Mediterranean and the Alps, the climate in Marseille is characterised by long, hot summers. A city that fuses the new with the old, Marseille is a city unlike many others.

Located on the coast of the Gulf of Lion, part of the Mediterranean Sea near the mouth of the Rhône, it is little surprise Marseille has wonderful beaches. Plage de Prado houses the main family beaches. Spacious and picturesque, it is a great option for kids with its playgrounds, climbing walls, and skate parks. 

Marseille is home to many historical monuments and maritime museums and art galleries, and a wide selection of vintage restaurants and bars in the Old Port of Marseille. A city where the sun shines on all, a hike or a bike along the Grand Canyon du Verdon is a great way to explore all this city has to offer.

9. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is an ever present in terms of high popularity with tourists, with Potugal’s capital brimming with culture, delicious food, historical sites, and of course great weather. Lisbon is a rewarding destination that combines beautiful old neighbourhoods with a vibrancy that make it one of Europe’s most exciting cities.

Lisbon offers stunning views from the top. Climb up to Christ the King to bask in sunshine and enjoy the glorious view. Inspired by the Brazilian statue “Christ the Redeemer”, Lisbon’s smaller equivalent aptly named “Christ the King” offers one of the best views of Lisbon and the Tejo River.

Across Palermo, there are incredible markets to explore: flea markets, food markets, all teeming with life, character, and explosion of the senses. Prepare yourself for the smell of fresh strawberries, basil and wild fennel, the bubbling sound of cooking.

Questions to ask before moving abroad

If you’ve been thinking about relocating, whether that’s to Italy or anywhere overseas, having a clear plan before you move will help prepare you for the future and set realistic expectations for arrival.

Where is the ideal place to relocate?

Have you already nailed down the place you wish to relocate to, or are you weighing up a few different options? If you’re considering moving abroad it’s time to do some serious research on the whereabouts. Be honest with yourself about whether, for example, you really intend to put in the hours to learn a foreign language. Consider factors like visas, how to stay in touch with loved ones, language and work opportunities. Narrow down your options to the top two or three choices and consider booking an initial scouting trip. If you have only ever visited this place in high summer, maybe book an off-season trip.

Is this a short, medium or long-term plan?

To help plan for your relocation it’s important to have an idea whether this move will be a short, medium or long-term change. This will help you plan for living, job-related expenses and what your immigration path will be. It will also determine how you sort your affairs back home before you leave. For example, why worry too much about healthcare if you’re only living there for the short-term?

Can you afford to move?

You are going to face an onslaught of costs when moving abroad. First off, there will be financial matters to settle at home. Are there ongoing payments you will need to budget for? Will you sell your property or rent it out and risk voids if a tenant leaves? You will need to factor in the cost of moving yourself and your belongings abroad. After you arrive you will need to work out accommodation, food and other immediate expenses you will encounter during the first few weeks. As early as possible, you need to start gathering a “dream life abroad fund”.

What will I live on in my new place?

Unless you are living off savings you will need to consider how you will derive an income once in your new location. Will you need to find a job, and if so, is there plenty of work in your field? Will you be able to maintain your UK income while living abroad? If you’re retired how will you access your pension and will you be eligible for annual increases? For those continuing to derive an income or pension in the UK, using a payment specialist like Smart Currency Exchange can be a great way to transfer money to your new location.

Is it best to keep a home in the UK?

For some people who moved abroad in the boom years of the mid-2000s, the global financial crisis came as a shock. What are the costs of buying and what is the local real estate market doing, is it a buyer’s or a seller’s market? If you plan to rent have you researched rental availability in your new location? What are the normal customs with renting, are short-term rentals common or do most landlords require longer-term leases?

This list is full of hidden gems: small Italian towns that aren’t well-known travel destinations except by Italians themselves.

Research into these bucket list-worthy towns revealed:

• The top three towns are all located in and around the Gulf of Naples
• The south of Italy dominates the list with seven of the top 10 spots
• Coastal towns reign supreme: seven out of the 10 towns are located near the coast.

Sorrento takes first place in this ranking of most searched for Italian towns of last year, with more than 3,000 searches per month. Thanks to the fertile volcanic land, Sorrento is well known for its fragrant lemons, and the limoncello made from the local harvest. Vieste fascinates its visitors with white houses that almost seem to sparkle against the background of the intense blue of the sea. From this town on the Apulian coast, it’s also possible to explore the nearby Tremiti Islands.

10. Urbino – Marche

Urbino, a charming town in the hills of the Marche region, completes the top 10 of the most sought-after villages online, with well over 1600 searches per month. This city was one of the most important centres of the Italian Renaissance: it is the birthplace of the renowned painter and architect Raphael, one of the most well-known artists of the Renaissance. The picturesque town is famed for its art museums and historical city centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.
