The Easter holidays are on their way, with households louder, busier and also less predictable. While families may welcome the break in routine, Alyssa Ralph, canine behaviour and nutrition expert at Years, warns that dogs often experience this shift very differently, with subtle behaviour changes frequently misunderstood.

From tail wagging to so-called “guilty looks”, many of the behaviours dog owners think they understand are routinely misread, and those misunderstandings could be quietly affect stress levels, feeding habits and long-term wellbeing. “Dogs communicate constantly through body language and behaviour, but humans often interpret those signals through their own emotions, rather than those of the dog,” says Alyssa. “What looks cute, naughty or attention-seeking is often a dog trying to regulate stress, diffuse a difficult situation, or respond to changes in their environment. Half term can bring later mornings, different walk times, more visitors, increased noise, and children wanting constant interaction, all of which represent routine disruption from a dog’s perspective. And that doesn’t just affect training or behaviour – they can influence appetite, digestion and feeding routines, too. Here are some behaviours owners most commonly misinterpret.

Tail wagging always means happiness

A wagging tail doesn’t automatically signal joy. The height, speed and stiffness of the wag matter. A fast, rigid wag held high can indicate alertness or anxiety rather than excitement — something owners frequently overlook.

Clinginess means neediness or bad habits

Dogs that lean on owners, follow closely, or seek frequent contact are often responding to uncertainty, routine change, or insecurity. This behaviour is linked to emotional regulation, not dominance or spoiling. During school holidays, increased household activity can heighten this response.

The head tilt is just a ‘cute reaction’

That familiar head tilt is a dog actively trying to process sound and facial cues. “Dogs tilt their heads to better understand us and triangulate where sounds are coming from. It’s a sign of engagement, communication, and information-gathering, not confusion.”

Zoomies are random hyperactivity

Sudden bursts of energy — often after baths, walks or periods of restraint — are a recognised stress-release behaviour. They help dogs reset after emotional or sensory overload. During school holidays, overstimulation from constant play or noise can increase the likelihood of these episodes.

A ‘guilty look’ means they know they’ve done wrong

As far as we know, dogs don’t experience guilt in the human sense. What owners interpret as shame is usually appeasement behaviour — a response to tone of voice, posture or perceived tension rather than an understanding of wrongdoing. The look is usually an attempt to diffuse any of that tension.

Why behaviour misunderstandings can affect diet and health

“A dog that’s stressed or overstimulated may eat too quickly, avoid food altogether, or show inconsistent hunger cues,” says Alyssa. “When behaviour is misunderstood, owners often adjust food unnecessarily, rather than addressing the underlying cause. School holidays mean children may offer extra treats, altered mealtimes or more distraction around feeding areas, all of which can disrupt a dog’s normal eating rhythm. Here’s what you can do to help.”

• Look at behaviour patterns over time, not isolated incidents

• Consider recent changes in routine or environment before labelling behaviour as ‘bad’

• Maintain consistent feeding times where possible

• Treat appetite changes as communication signals, not stubbornness

• Seek advice from qualified vets or behaviourists rather than relying on assumptions

“Dogs are incredibly expressive,” adds Alyssa. “When owners learn to read the signs properly, it reduces stress, strengthens trust, and supports better long-term health.”

The October half-term break’s looming, and for many that means a family holiday; often with our four legged friends in tow. Recent research by Brittany Ferries revealed that 78% of dog owners now travel with their fur babies, meaning it’s time to do your own Checklist (like what we did?) for keeping them safe on long car journeys. This is where the experts at Harringtons; not only for safety tips but also the key travel laws every dog owner needs to know – some of which might surprise you.

Keep them cool

Your car should be cool and ventilated, as dogs can overheat quickly — even on a mild day. Use air conditioning, sunshades, or open your windows slightly — but never enough for them to jump out. While it might look like they’re enjoying the ride it’s actually unsafe and could result in a fine of up to £5,000. Also, leaving a dog alone in a hot vehicle can result in heatstroke, a criminal offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

Keep them secure

It’s important you use a seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage, or dog guard to keep your four legged companion safe, as well as reducing distraction while you drive. Under the UK Highway Code, dogs must be suitably restrained when travelling in a vehicle. And if you don’t it could invalidate insurance: in the event of an accident, your insurance could be voided if it’s found that an unrestrained pet contributed to the crash.

Keep them happy

Plan regular breaks: just like us, dogs need time to stretch their legs, have a drink, and get some fresh air. Try to stop every 90 minutes or so, with services and dog-friendly rest areas great for quick leg-stretches.

Pack the essentials: water, food or treats, a bowl, waste bags, a lead, and familiar items like their blanket or favourite toy will help to keep them calm and at ease.

Boot space matters: if your dog travels in the boot, make sure it’s spacious enough, clean, and secure, with enough room to lie down and turn around comfortably.

Be aware of travel laws if going abroad: if you’re planning a trip to Europe this half term with your dog, ensure their vaccinations and paperwork meet the requirements of your destination country.

The great outdoors brings a welcome boost for man, woman and beast, whether it’s a walk with the dog, a riding trek, enjoying field sports, some time in the garden or even working on the farm. Whether the countryside means work, rest or play to you there are lots of ways to make outdoor living a pleasure.

Here are some of the ways humans, animals and pets can get the most out of the countryside.

1. The Dryboot Company

The Harris Dryboot is the only 100% guaranteed waterproof, multi-purpose, lace-up boot available in the UK. The first choice for many farmers, walkers, gardeners, anglers and field sports enthusiasts, it’s ideal for those who need a comfortable, reliable, waterproof boot but prefer not to wear a knee-length welly.

In production for over 60 years, the design, construction, manufacturing process and materials used have changed little in that time – a real testament to its success.

The top-quality natural rubber construction of the boot makes it impervious to damage from bramble or rough undergrowth; a steel shank built into the non-slip sole adds strength and protection for rough terrain walking or heavy digging; generous sizing and deep gusset provides easy access; a cotton/jersey lining helps to prevent the foot and thick padding around the ankle area makes it extremely comfortable and prevents chafing or ankle rub.

2. Beretta

The St James line of Beretta outdoor clothing is designed and devoted to the needs of those who enjoy driven game shooting. It owes its creation, styling and name to the knowledge of the staff at the London Beretta Gallery based on St James’s Street; it stands out for the exclusivity of the materials, traditional style, cut and performance.

Available in both male and female tailoring, the extremely elegant St James coat and St James breeks are made of fine Italian wool and cashmere and, thanks to the waterproof and breathable EVO membrane, you’ll be staying dry this season. The coat also features a Coolmax® lining, which further helps with temperature control for additional comfort.

And why not complete the St James look with a vest and cap?

3. Gunplan

It’s quite remarkable to think that whilst it’s a legal requirement to insure yourself when you drive a car, it’s not when you own a gun.

That said, the majority of gun owners would recommend you have insurance. And many estates now require you to provide proof of insurance before allowing you to take part in a shoot.

Happily, shooting insurance is cost-effective and simple to set up, making it one of the easiest items to tick off your checklist. Gunplan provides quality cover that matches the quality of your shot. Your top priority should be public liability cover and Gunplan offers £10m of cover for around £19 a year. And it comes with a proof of insurance card to show the venue.

Other cover options can be added if you need them, including equipment cover, legal protection and personal accident.

Find out more at gunplan.co.uk

4. Tuffies

Most dogs spend a lot of time sleeping on their beds, so to keep a dog happy, active and healthy a good bed with excellent insulation from the cold floor, is vital.

Tuffies beds provide a real den for dogs, acknowledging their instinct for a cosy, warm place in which to spend their sleeping and relaxing hours.

More than half of all dogs in the UK are currently overweight and a lot of pet owners don’t know it. According to vets, there has been a huge increase in pet obesity over the last two years and our dogs have grown even more in collar size throughout the pandemic.

It’s clear that the only way to solve this problem is by feeding podgy pooches a diet specifically targeted for weight loss. Developed by veterinary surgeon John Burns, the Burns Weight Control Range has been specially formulated for overweight dogs using healthy and natural ingredients such as lean chicken and wholegrain oats.

This range is a complete diet that is low in calories, hypoallergenic and high in fibre, supporting natural weight loss and helping hungry dogs feel fuller for longer. Look after your pups and let them eat right and feel right.

7. PDSA Petsurance

We want the best for our pets and do everything we can to ensure they live their best life.

But accidents can happen and pet insurance can make a real difference. You can focus on helping your pet get better, rather than worrying about veterinary bills.

The different types of policies on the market can be confusing, so carefully compare them for their level of cover and read the terms and conditions to check which meet your needs.

Petsurance from PDSA offers a choice of market-leading cover levels, including two five-star Defaqto-rated policies, giving you peace of mind that your pet is protected for whatever happens next.

Every policy sold gives access to a 24/7 advice helpline and you can pay monthly at no extra cost. Buying a Petsurance from PDSA policy also contributes to the charity’s work, caring for sick and injured pets across the UK.

1. Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest, located 20 miles north of Nottingham, is a country park famous for its historical association with the legend of Robin Hood. The forest has four main walking trails designed to suit all interests and energy levels, which all start from the visitors centre.

The Giants Trail is the shortest route, and it takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. This trail offers visitors the opportunity to explore Sherwood Forest’s ancient oak trees, the largest collection in Europe, which are truly spectacular to look at. Wildwood Trail is the longest route at 4 miles long, taking approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete. There’s a lot to see on this trail which gives an insight into the wildlife, history and geology of this area

2. Epping Forest

If you live near the big smoke and often find it hard to find a quiet place to walk your dog, Epping Forest in London could be the answer. Located just outside of the city, the forest covers an enormous 6,000 acres of woodland.

If you’re looking to get away from the bustling city life, you can explore the ancient Copped Hall Mansion with a 5-mile scenic walk. There’s something for everyone to enjoy at Epping Forest; including your canine companion.

It can take up to a whole week for active ramblers to walk the entire length of the 84-mile long Hadrian’s Wall. But fear not, there are plenty of shorter but still challenging walks around the area that are great for you and your four-legged friend to explore this upcoming weekend.

Why not follow the 5-mile stroll that starts at Roman Fort, Homesteads, and takes you right past Sycamore Gap which was famously used as part of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Set among the gorgeous Northumbrian landscapes, the wall is still impressive today and captures the importance of the Roman Empire.

If you fancy dipping into the legendary history of Robin Hood, why not visit the stunning coast of Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire. As an old fishing village, there are plenty of scenic spots to explore with your pooch, including the spectacular views from the top of the village, a three-mile walk across the sandy beaches, and soaring cliffs that look out to sea.

Your help is vital to support the increasing number of people living with sight loss in the UK. By creating these powerful guide dog partnerships, we can provide a future where every person with sight loss has the confidence and support to live their lives to the full.

From vibrant Christmas trees covered in brightly-coloured baubles and twinkling tinsel to Santa’s stockings and the presents within, your fur babies will probably view your festive decorations as perfectly irresistible play-things.

Luckily for pet parents everywhere, Checklist has collaborated with tails.com to put together a list of ways to protect your decorations from dog-related damages, and help your baubles survive until Boxing Day at least.

1. Christmas tree

Photo by Any Lane from Pexels

Your dog will almost certainly be tempted to chew on the trunk, branches and needles of the tree, and they may even attempt to mark it with their scent; a very unwanted Christmas present.

Make sure that your dog is never alone in the same room with your Christmas tree, at least not for a prolonged period of time. Pups are far more likely to get up to mischief without their owners around to tell them off.

Consider installing a baby gate around your Christmas tree to stop your dog from getting too close to it.

2. Fairy lights

Photo by 一 徐 from Pexels

Fairy lights on a Christmas tree are an absolute staple, and fun for the whole family. Your dog is no exception, as they will more than likely be entertained by the display of twinkling colours and lights, and may even attempt to play with them.

One way to conceal your cords would be to hide them under a rug, with the wiring taped to the floor to keep firmly in place. Another method of limiting exposed wiring would be to tape them along the skirting board.

3. Baubles

Photo by ROMAN ODINTSOV from Pexels

What dog doesn’t love spending a good few hours chasing a tennis ball, and what is a bauble to a dog, if not a big, sparkly tennis ball?

To avoid bite-marks on your baubles, tightly fasten your baubles to a deep branch on your tree and try to avoid the bottom branches to protect your baubles from curious paws and excited tails.

4. Tinsel

Photo by Tara Winstead from Pexels

Tinsel must be a tempting looking toy for dogs to play with, due to the fact that they can hold it in their mouths like a stick.

To protect your tinsel and your terrier from each other, keep any tinsel firmly out of your dogs’ reach, whether that’s on your tree or elsewhere, as this should prevent your dog from chewing or playing with it.

5. Garlands

Photo by Wes Hicks on Unsplash

Like tinsel, garlands could be a tempting plaything for your pup, especially if you opt for the natural garlands over the paper or plastic alternative.

Try hanging your garlands from as high a place as possible. As well as high shelves and mantlepiece, you may also want to try hanging your garlands in a pattern across your ceiling.

6. Edible decorations

Photo by Julia Filirovska from Pexels

We all know how greedy our pups can be, and while tasty treats like candy canes and chocolate Santas may have your dog drooling in delight, they will also make them very sick if they do get hold of them.

If your dog is particularly fond of food, then the best idea might be to not put anything edible on your tree at all. Although, if you really want to treat any children in the family to something off the tree, place them out of reach from your dog.

7. Presents

Photo by Laura James from Pexels

While a huge pile of gifts underneath the tree is one of the most special sights at Christmas, our excitable pups may be tricked into thinking that the presents are all for them, especially if some of them contain food.

Pup-owners should avoid storing presents under the tree until Christmas Eve at the very earliest. This will reduce the likelihood of your pup ruining your presents before the big day arrives.

8. Stockings

Photo by Donna Spearman on Unsplash

We all want everything to look perfect on Christmas morning, so the last thing you want is one of Santa’s stockings to be covered in doggy drool, bite-marks and fur.

If you can, keep your dog out of whichever room you keep your stockings in on Christmas Eve night. You might even consider fitting a lock to the door, if your pup likes to explore the house at night.

A locked door may also help to keep out any over-eager children, keen on finally catching Santa in the act this year.

9. Mistletoe

Photo by Paul Zoetemeijer on Unsplash

Sharing a kiss under the mistletoe is a cute and traditional activity for couples to enjoy, but for our naturally curious pups, mistletoe may look like a piece of food or a plaything that is simply impossible to resist; especially if it falls to where they could reach it.

Consider only keeping your mistletoe up as a temporary feature, perhaps for a Christmas party or just on Christmas Day itself. This might make that quick kiss under the mistletoe feel all the more special too.

10. Wreaths

Photo by Erwan Hesry on Unsplash

Christmas wreaths are a festive favourite, with many people choosing to celebrate the holiday with one hanging proudly on their front door.

While wreaths do commonly contain things like ribbons, fairy lights and even candles, they are mostly made of all-natural components such as leaves, twigs, flowers, fruits and those famous Christmas staples, holly and ivy. Since wreaths will smell so much like the outside, this decoration may very well pique your dog’s interest.

Since most people keep their Christmas wreaths on the front door of their homes, and usually on the outside, following this trend should be enough to prevent your dog from getting too close to your wreath.

With the lifting of restrictions, it’s inevitable that we’re going to be out and about a little more – and that means, our pets will be too. However, it’s important to remember that with the sunshine, come dangers and risks to the health of our beloved pets. Checklist spoke to the RSPCA’s pet welfare expert, Dr Samantha Gaines, who told us:

“We’ve all experienced a very challenging time with the lockdowns, and as measures have eased it will be tempting during the hot weather this week for us to want to spend lots of time outside with our families and take our pets, but taking our dogs out with us for walks or to the park could really put them at risk of suffering heatstroke or exhaustion. It’s really important that we take extra special care of our pets and wildlife during this extremely hot weather.”

Dogs and horses need exercise, even when it’s hot. But the RSPCA says you should avoid exercising them in excessively hot weather. Experts advise walking or riding in the morning or evening when it’s cooler. When walking dogs keep in mind that pavements can get very hot in the warm weather – if it’s too hot to touch with your hand, then it’s too hot for a dog’s paws.

1. Never leave pets in hot vehicles

Photo by Tim Gouw from Pexels

Never leave pets in vehicles, caravans, conservatories or outbuildings in the warm weather. Dogs, and other pets, can overheat and die if left in a hot environment, such as a car. Heatstroke is extremely dangerous for animals as it is for people and according to the British Veterinary Association, one in seven dogs affected by the condition dies as a result. Just don’t risk it. Don’t leave your pets in the car.

2. Check the heat of the floor

When walking dogs keep in mind that pavements can get very hot in the warm weather – if it’s too hot to touch with your hand, then it’s too hot for a dog’s paws.

3. Keep them cool!

When it’s hot at home and your pet is struggling to find somewhere cool, wrap an ice pack or frozen water bottle in a tea towel, or use damp towels for your them to lie on.

4. Stock up with sunblock!

Photo by MART PRODUCTION from Pexels

Stock up with sunblock! Animals can get sunburnt too – and as in humans, sunburn can sometimes lead to skin cancer. Use animal-friendly sunblock or special SPF fabric clothing. Pink-pigmented skin burns easily – particularly areas around the nose, ears, tip of tail and stomach (particularly for sun-baskers!). Light-coloured pets are most at risk, are very short haired, or have any thin or bald patches of fur. Sunburn is typically very painful, causes skin damage and can sometimes lead to skin cancer. use pet-safe sun cream. Sunburn in pets looks just like sunburn in humans and you should look out for signs of redness, crusting, itching, flaking, blistering or pain. If your pet does burn, gently apply cold compresses to cool their pet’s skin, keep your pet out of sunlight and consult your vet.

5. Find shady spaces

Ensure animals have constant access to shade and fresh drinking water at all times. For animals that are kept outside, remember that as the sun moves during the day so too does the shade. Remember – somewhere that was shaded in the morning could be in full sun by the afternoon.

6. Make some cool snacks

Dogs enjoy a cool snack as much as the rest of us! Add ice cubes to your dog’s bowl, freeze their kong or for a real treat, make an ice lolly for your dog from pet-friendly ingredients! For inspiration, have a look at this RSPCA recipe for easy-to-make peanut butter treats Youtube.com

7. Hydrate your pets!

Keep guinea pigs cool and hydrated by making them a smorgasbord of crunchy, fresh vegetables.

8. Keep away the pests

When the sun arrives, so do the pests. Ticks and fleas carry diseases from typhus to Lyme disease and as with most things, prevention is better than cure. Make sure your pets are up to date with their flea and tick treatments and talk to your vet if you’re unsure. If your pet does pick up a tick, it’s important to remove them straight away. To avoid squeezing the body or leaving the head in, which will increase the chance of it passing diseases on, you’ll need to twist the tick off. This can be done using a tick removal tool, which can be picked up at pet shops or the vets. Your vet will be able to show you the best way to remove a tick by twisting. Do not try to burn them off or use lotion to suffocate, as this won’t stop the possibility of getting bacterial infections like Lyme disease, and risks causing injury

9. Get creative

Encourage pet chickens to stay in shaded areas by hanging up a homemade vegetable garland.

10. Splash around!

Fill a paddling pool or spray a hose for your dog to play in, but always supervise them around water.

Alpacas have been increasing in popularity in the UK since they first started to be imported in numbers during the 1990s. I remember going to the Royal Show, a big part of the countryside calendar until its closure in 2009, and being mesmerised by these strange animals, with bulging eyes, long agile legs that can leap a hedge in one bound and tall ears that swivel like satellite antenna.

More Harry Potter mash-up of a rabbit, a deer and Buckbeak, than any credible result of evolution, there’s no denying they’re weird. I’m not entirely sure how Nature looked at the alpaca and thought, ‘Yeah, that’s a good day’s work’, but somehow, they made the final cut. Saucer-eyed, buck toothed and slack-mouthed, with a perpetually dropped lower lip, they look in equal parts, astonished and astonishing.

Saucer-eyed, buck toothed and slack-mouthed, with a perpetually dropped lower lip, they look in equal parts, astonished and astonishing.

It took me another 10 years to become an owner of four of the estimated 45,000 alpacas that now live in the UK. Indigenous to South America, they are most densely populated in the Peruvian Andes. Closely related to llamas, with which they are often confused, there are two different breeds of alpaca – the huacaya (pronounced wa-ky- a) and the suri.

The huacaya, which makes up 95% of the alpaca population and is the most commonly seen in the UK, has a dense, fluffy-looking fleece, growing straight out from the side of the animal. The suri by contrast, has a fleece that hangs down like shaggy dreadlocks, making it look like a cute version of a 1970’s lampshade.

Products made from alpaca fleece are niche, luxury items with a price tag to match, but they are sought after with good reason. Described by the Peruvian Incas as La fibra de los dioses, ‘The fibre of the gods’, alpaca fleece is as soft and luxurious as cashmere, lightweight and incredibly warm.

Alpacas aren’t just cute, their sustainable by-products are beautiful and luxurious.

If you fancy getting up close and personal with alpacas, an alpaca show is a good way to find out more. Breeders bring their pride and joy to showcase to a fascinated public. Or if you’re looking for something a bit more hands-on, then perhaps alpaca trekking is for you. Basically, it involves taking an alpaca for a walk in the countryside and I’m told it’s very relaxing. For more details about alpaca showing or trekking, you can visit the British Alpaca Society website.

Image shows Suri Alpacas.
If you’re considering keeping these unusual animals, you can also find plenty of information about their care and welfare on this site. Bear in mind it’s a long-term commitment, alpacas live into their 20s and they are herd animals and shouldn’t be kept alone but ideally in groups of three or more. However, be warned – the fact that you love alpacas is no guarantee that they’ll have the same opinion of you.

Alpacas, it turns out, are naturals at social distancing. Guarding their personal space is really not a stretch. They’re pre-disposed not to like you. Or each other. Or anyone really. They don’t want to be close to you and although they live in groups, they keep each other at legs’ length. Strong legs it turns out. Strong legs, with hard hooves at the end, that pack a really painful kick. Just in case you weren’t sufficiently deterred by the radioactive, projectile spit…

One minute they’re humming companionably at each other, swapping opinions in Les Dawson impressions of gossipy old ladies disapproving of everything around them. The next, they taking outraged offense at one of their compadré’s hummy opinions.

Swinging their neck round in a melodramatic huff, they’ll launch an enormous glob of foul-smelling slime at the surprised recipient. And sometimes it’s not at another alpaca. Sometimes it’s at you! God alone knows what internal alchemy percolates this slime to such heights of stomach-churning pungency, but by all that is unnatural in the natural world, this gunk is biological warfare.

Still love them? Yes, me too.
