It’s estimated that the global population will reach almost 10 billion by 2050 – now that’s a lot! So, in order for the planet to feed this many mouths, sourcing our food sustainably, and in a way that doesn’t destroy biological diversity and instead which actively replenishes it, is key.

One of the main factors enabling us to source food sustainably and therefore eat ‘sustainably’ involves protecting the diversity of our flora, fauna (that’s plant and animal life if you’re not in the know) and their ecosystems. Biodiversity is crucial to life on earth because it provides us with clean air, fresh water, good quality soil and crop pollination. Want to know more? We asked Birds Eye for their advice on helping to reverse biodiversity loss – and it’s easier than you think.

1 Keep it native

For a start, use plants that encourage a wide range of pollinating insects and other wildlife. Crocuses are great for spring to aid early pollination for bees; foxgloves are also ideal for bumblebees, honeybees and moths; while lavender not only smells amazing but is a great pollinator for honey bees, too.

2 Go wild

If you have a garden, allow a small area to grow wild, or leave a patch of fallen leaves where they are, as insects, birds and small mammals benefit from the cover and native plants. We also did a little digging (pun intended) and discovered wild spaces contribute to better water quality and help absorb carbon.

Photo by Avelino Calvar Martinez from Burst

3 Tree planter

If you don’t have access to an outdoor space look out for a tree down your street – they often have soil at the base so you can grow wildflower seeds quite easily. Why wildflowers? Again they’re perfect for pollinators and hardly need looking after, waving goodbye to the need for fertilisers and pesticides.

4 Inspire the future

Get children involved in gardening so future generations love and respect wildlife and protect nature. There’s tons they’ll love, from growing veg, feeding the birds and digging your own pond to watch dragonflies, frogs, newts and more visit. Just make sure you teach them how to stay safe around it.

5 Know the source

When buying foods, take a look at what the manufacturers are doing to support sustainability. You can do this by looking at their website and many brands, who put the source of their foods on the back of the packaging to help us know that the food has been responsibly sourced and produced.

Photo by Filip Urban on Unsplash

6 Keep it natural

Want to get rid of weeds? Do it via the no-dig method. Grab a fair amount of cardboard and place it firmly down over the weedy area with plenty of layers. It works well because the cardboard stops light and vital nutrients from reaching the weeds, meaning they can’t thrive.

7 Limit harsh chemicals

Avoid using pesticides, and let natural predators control your garden pests instead. Our tip? Surround your plants with a ring of wool pellets or grit. Put a thick layer around the base of your plants and the slugs will hopefully steer clear. It’s that simple – no need for anything nasty.

8 Feed wildlife

And don’t forget about the importance of feeding local wildlife. Foxes love to snack on raw meat, apples and pears; squirrels should be fed unshelled nuts like walnuts or almonds; while hedgehogs are partial to wet and dry cat food and unsalted peanuts. Keep out a bowl of topped up water, too.

Creating your own indoor haven is easier than ever. The variety of plants that you can bring into your home is very diverse nowadays, and there’s an abundance of tips and tricks available to help you on your way.

If you’ve been craving some greenery, here are some basic steps to take to make sure the plant life in your home thrives.

Evaluate your space and time

You might have grand plans for your spaces, you might even have specific plants already picked out, but it will be all for naught unless you can fit it all in your space and make it look aesthetically pleasing in the end.

Therefore, the first thing you should do is evaluate the spaces you intend to incorporate plants into. Perhaps the most important factor to pay attention to is natural lighting. Plants need water and sunlight to thrive. If there isn’t enough sunlight, your plants will have trouble surviving.

Check which direction your windows face. If you have south-facing windows (and live in the northern hemisphere), you’re in luck! West-facing and east-facing windows are also good for many plants. North-facing windows don’t cut it for most greenery, so if you have only north-facing windows, you might have to resort to getting a grow light.

Photo by Laura Lauch on Unsplash.

It’s not enough to just have south-facing windows. It’s also important to have an idea of the space you have near windows and how much time you have to tend to your little green friends. These factors should influence which plants you decide to purchase, as many plants require different things, and should be combined with others in ways that please the eye.

Maximise your space

Most people have limited space for plants. You simply can’t just buy every plant you see and hope to fit them all in your home while still leaving space to breathe. However, if you have evaluated your space effectively, you should be able to maximise it to create a lovely smorgasbord of greenery.

The first thing you should consider is what your goal is for each space. This encompasses colour, sizing, grouping, depth, and height, as well as considering your lighting limitations.

Then, consider whether you want plants to sit on the floor, on a bench or table, or perhaps even hang from the ceiling. Once you have an idea what you want to do with each space, consider grouping plants together that enjoy the same kinds of conditions. Also, figure out which kinds of plants will complement each other, and how you can set them up to accentuate their features and the dynamics of the room.

Choose the right plants

While you can find plants in a wide range of stores, there are certainly places to buy from that are better than others. The most important thing to look for when buying a plant is health, because your goal should always be to help it grow. In general, saturated and deep colour is a indicator of good health, as well as evidence of new growth, such as shoots or buds.

Photo by Leonie Christine on Unsplash.

This is why ‘Mom and Pop’ nurseries are the best place to buy from. In general, they take amazing care of their plants and are knowledgeable about post-purchase care. They can also help you with advice on your general plan and help you tweak it to suit your needs.

There are also garden centres in most large hardware shops, however, the plants at these shops might not be as healthy, and you might have trouble finding advice about your purchases.

Lately, there has been a trend towards purchasing plants or seeds online. But with a certified minefield of online plant retailers cropping up over the last decade, it’s best to play it safe and choose to get your plants from reputable companies that grow their own. The benefit of ordering online is that you have a wider variety of options and can find some real rare stunners, which helps if you already know exactly what you’re looking for. But keep in mind that, in general, the plants you buy online will be smaller and could take a while to be delivered.

Think outside the pot

Who says you have to pot plants in plain ceramic or terracotta? There are so many fun and unique ways to display your little green friends these days, so let your imagination run wild!

If you need some inspiration, there are many tried and true options that you can bring home. Something as simple as a ceramic pot with a unique design can really make a display pop. Terrariums can also bring a nice focal point to an otherwise dull room. Hanging pots are certainly trendy lately, and they can help maximise your space if you’re limited. Bird cages fit this mould effectively as well. The options at your disposal are virtually endless; if it can hold soil, it can probably host a little greenery. Don’t forget air plants as well.

Photo by Uneebo Office Design on Unsplash.

One of the more interesting trends gaining popularity lately are living walls. Living walls can be a bit tricky to get going, but once they are thriving, they’re some of the boldest and most immersive ways to display plants in your home. There are a number of ways to take them a step further, for example, you could surround yours with a picture frame.

Monitor progress and be flexible

It’s almost guaranteed that you will encounter some issues with certain plants in your collection, if not most. Whether bugs have started attacking the leaves, diseases are latching on, or the leaves are simply starting to brown, there are usually simple solutions to common problems – if you act quickly.

Even better than swift action is thinking proactively about plant health. There are many ways to prevent these issues from arising in the first place. Insecticides are regularly recommended as a preventative measure to reduce the incidence of unwanted pests. Wiping dust off of leaves regularly can help prevent mould from growing. Keeping plants at optimal moisture levels according to their needs can help keep them green and happy.

But if issues occur, and they will, do your best to be flexible with your goals. You cannot force growth or health, so be patient with your green buddies and try them in different spots or different pots if they seem unhappy – as well as different watering techniques and fertilisers.

Not everyone can have the greenest of thumbs, but there are many easy steps to follow to do your best to create thriving plant life. Enjoy building your own little indoor sanctuary!

Spending endless hours sat out in the sun’s direct rays can get a little too much, especially during the height of summertime. Therefore, a parasol can be an essential way to provide respite and, of course, shade. Available in dark grey and neutral tones and made from steel with a polyester canopy, this parasol is both stylish and functional.

With a manual hand-crank, the parasol is easy to set up. It also has the ability to be tilted, allowing you to get perfect shade from the sun.

One of the best ways to relax on a summer afternoon is in a hammock. The Blakeley Swinging chair is perfect for spending lazy afternoons in the sun, listening to birds, podcasts, or reading books and socialising with friends. The striped, blue, red, and white colours are also a throwback to classic beach towels on British sea-sides.

The seat comes without a stand and can be easily moved. Meaning the chair is suitable for outdoors and indoors in the colder months. The material is a quick-drying polyester and cotton blend, suitable for machine wash.

How cool has EastEnders actress Tamzin made her back garden look with this amazing statement wall? The three prints are all courtesy of Yard Art. These offer waterproof and fadeproof prints that are durable for all outside areas. All of the designs are printed onto one flat sheet of outdoor acrylic, which can then be mounted to walls or fence panels. Jess Wright, Mario Falcone and Georgia Kousoulou are also all fans of the range.

Peter’s a family man, through and through. His Instagram is filled with pictures of him spending time with his kids Junior, Princess, Amelia and Theo. We therefore weren’t at all surprised to see this snap of his back garden, complete with slide and swing in the background. The Plum Play Wooden Lookout Tower looks to be a pretty good match – made from durable pine, which promises durability and strength, it’s also been pressure treated to guard against wood rot and infestation.

3. Make your garden a social space like Lucie Donlan

Love Islander Lucie transformed her home in Teesside – and we’re mighty impressed by how she has made over the garden. Surfer Lucie posted a series of pictures on her stories of their outside space, writing; “Here is the new project.” The outside bar has been painted in a vivid shade of ocean blue, which is no doubt a nod to Lucie’s love of the water. Why not invest in this Mercia Pressure Treated Garden Bar from Wilko – it’s up to you whether you want to paint it in the same blue hue…

Indoor air pollution is between two and 10 times higher than outdoors. Plants inside can help purify the air, create a calmer atmosphere and add style to your interiors.

Houseplants can reduce pollutants in the air by absorbing them and then converting them to food.

Unfortunately, most indoor spaces do suffer air pollution, often due to paints used in decorating; detergent and other cleaning products, smoking and furnishings.

So adding foliage to your living space can work wonders – and not just aesthetically.

BBC Gardener’s World presenter and Stannah’s gardening expert Mark Lane says that placing certain types of plants in different rooms can impact wellbeing in many ways.

“Looking and caring for greenery helps to protect against mood disorders, depression, neurotic behaviour and such stress-related issues,” he said.

“It’s therefore important to seek green sanctuaries outdoors — like parks — and also bring the outside into your home.”

Other benefits of houseplants Mark points to are a reduction in symptoms such as headaches; sore eyes; loss of concentration and feelings of depression.

The University of Sydney even produced a report which found houseplants contributed to a 37 per cent reduction in tension and anxiety; 58 per cent drop in depression and a four per cent decrease in anger and hostility.

They also provide a much-needed link to earth and nature – particularly for those in densely packed urban housing.

With more and more of us living in cities and in smaller spaces with less outdoor space, it makes sense to grow what you can – not just indoors, but on windowsills, balconies and porches too – whatever space you have available to you!

Aloe vera

Photo by Cintia Siqueira from Pexels

One plant lots of experts agree on the benefits of, this succulent is great for bedrooms and kitchens.

Also known as aloe barbaensis miller, it purifies the air while being a calming aid to sleep.

The gel inside its leaves is famously used for soothing burns, but it’s more than just a green first aid kit, according to Patch Plants.

It removes pollutants such as carbon dioxide from the air and continuously releases oxygen throughout the night.

These plants like a lot of light and not too much water, but will benefit from a liquid fertiliser in spring and summer.

Make sure to use one made specifically for succulents and cacti.

Peace lily

Photo by Thiea Alhoz from Pexels

This beauty can improve air quality by up to 60 per cent!

Jo Lambell, founder of beardsanddaisies.co.uk, is a fan.

“Stunning in looks and serene in spirit, the peace lily is a great all-rounder,” she said.

“You’d be forgiven for thinking it may be difficult to care for judging by its beautiful appearance, however it is very low maintenance and also a fantastic air purifier.”

Mark recommends this one for bathrooms, in particular.

“It helps reduce the levels of mould spores that grow in the home by absorbing these through its leaves, then circulating them to the plant’s roots where they are used as food,” he added.

“The peace lily can help to keep shower tiles and curtains free from mildew and the plant can absorb harmful vapours from alcohol and acetone.”

Confusingly, despite their name, peace lilies, or spathiphyllum, are in fact part of the Araceae family of plants.

Snake plant

Photo by Huy Phan from Pexels

The name may scare some, but the sanservieria trifasciata is apparently one of the highest oxygen-producing plants in the world.

They are also a great introduction to indoor gardening for beginners – they are easy to care for, very hard to kill and barely even need watering in winter.

Currently on trend – as seen in many a social media influencer’s background – they also look great in modern or retro-styled interiors.

They are best placed in partial sun.

Spider plant

Photo by Lucian Alexe on Unsplash

Another one with a name to give you the creeps, spiders plants – or chlorophytum comosum, if you’re squeamish – are also great for beginners.

They are low maintenance and easy to care for and, it is believed, in just two days they can remove up to 95 per cent of harmful toxins in the home, including potentially cancer-causing chemical formaldehyde.

Georgie Matthews, of greenhousesdirect.co.uk, points out they are great for smaller spaces, as their cascading long leaves mean they take up vertical space, rather than horizontal.

They are also considered the best indoor plant for those with asthma, due to their high toxin-absorption rate.

Areca palm

Photo by Behnam Norouzi on Unsplash

Visually stunning while stunningly beneficial, dypsis lutescens is an effective humidifier for damp rooms.

They remove dust, mould spores, bacteria and allergens from the surrounding atmosphere.

Its leaves produce negative ions, much like many air-purifying machines do.

Negative ions are credited with increasing psychological health, productivity and overall wellbeing.

For best results, aim for four shoulder-high plants per person.

Horticulture UK has revealed the most googled garden trends of 2021 so far and interest in less conventional garden trends is rising.

After spending the past year and a half in and out of lockdown, it’s no surprise home and garden DIY renovations are a popular way to pass the time. Now with restrictions lifting and summer in at its height, it’s time to give your outdoor space a revamp ready to greet your guests.

Here is a rundown of 10 styles to restyle your garden and make it truly stand out.

1. Japanese Garden

Credit: Thor Alvis/Unsplash

Coming top of Horticulture’s list this year are Japanese inspired gardens. PDC-Qualified Garden designer Elizabeth Waddington shared the following advice for creating a Japanese garden: “Japanese gardens are spaces which evoke a certain philosophy. They were designed to suggest an ancient, far-away natural landscape, and to express the fleeting and fragile nature of life. Achieving the feel of a Japanese garden means combining plants and other natural elements to achieve this feel.”

Waddington’s tips for creating an authentic Japanese inspired garden include winding pathways, a water feature or koi pond and a zen garden. Waddington also recommends a red painted bridge over the water feature. Bridges in Japanese gardens symbolise crossing into the spiritual world while the colour red represents wisdom. Key plant choices for this style of garden include acers, azaleas, bamboo, cypress, and cherry blossom.

2. Herb Garden

Credit: Tony Fitzpatrick/Unsplash

Not only a garden but also a worthwhile hobby, herb gardens are a good starting point for people looking to grow their own produce. The best part about creating your own herb garden is that you don’t actually need tonnes of space in order to create one. Herb gardens can be sprawling or no bigger than the size of a planter box.

The key to a successful herb garden is sun, your plants will need between six to eight hours of sunlight each day in order to grow happily. While established herbs can live in your garden all year round, new plants can be sown inside until they’re ready to love outside. Grown herb plants can go straight into the garden whereas seeds can be cheaper but harder work for a first-time plant grower. Another tip is to prepare the soil before planting the herbs, make sure your soil is well-drained with nutrient-rich soil. Good plant choices for your herb garden include Basil, Oregano, Chives, Mint, Sage, and Dill.

3. English Country Garden

Credit: Annie Spratt/Unsplash

You don’t need to live in a sprawling countryside cottage to create a dreamy fairy-tale garden. Cottage gardens have a quintessential, English country vibe and would be perfect for hosting garden parties in summer afternoons.

To create your perfect country paradise, look for a rainbow of soft pastel flowers, fragrant rose bushes, a vegetable patch, fruit trees and vintage cast iron garden furniture. When looking for the perfect country garden plants, RHS flowers recommend the following hardy geraniums, pinks (dianthus), delphiniums, honeysuckle, lavender, peonies, roses, hollyhocks, foxgloves, sweet peas. Honey scented phlox are particularly recommended by butterflies and other pollinators. To create an authentic feel, allow your plants to grow in a non-uniformed manner and including aerial climbers, such as Ivy, to decorate your fences and walls.

4. Rustic Garden

Credit: Sierra Bell/Unsplash

The rustic garden is probably the easiest and most laidback way to transform your outdoor space. A perfect style to recreate without breaking the bank, the key to creating a rustic garden is to make it look charming and inviting but without appearing too stylised.

Scour second-hand markets and websites to find retro plant pots to create an authentic look, without shelling out on stylised vintage furniture. Buying second-hand furniture and repurposing old unused things you already have will not only save you money but add to the rustic charm. Another method is to repurpose and recycle any existing furniture you already have, just make sure they’re appropriately weatherproof. Gardening etc runs through several ideas for how you can up-cycle old furniture to give it a rustic charm. One example is to give your old garden shed a new lease of life with a layer of bright or quirky paint.

5. Rock Garden

Credit: Annie Spratt/Unsplash

Rock gardens are a simple and uncomplicated way to add some character to your backyard. Also known as alpine gardens, they consist of piles of rocks, arranged to allow plants to grow out between the cracks. Choose stones which are differing in size to create a natural look and here possible, use the same type of stone (think cooler tones for contemporary houses and earthy tones for traditional houses, see gravel garden). Arrange the rocks in a manner which will keep the plants and the arrangement in place.

The most important factor when creating your rock garden is choosing the correct location, plants suitable for rock gardens thrive with lots of sunlight so making sure you choose somewhere with high exposure to sunlight and well-drained soil. Plants which are best for a rock garden are: Pasque flower (pulsatilla vulgaris), pinks (dianthus), thyme, houseleeks, succulents, candytuft, and dragons blood stonecrop.

6. Balcony Garden

Credit: Nathana Reboucas/Unsplah

Beautiful gardens are not only confined to people who have large, sprawling outside spaces, especially considering most city dwellers live in apartment buildings. If you utilise your space well, you can create an outside paradise on an urban balcony without it being overcluttered.

The key to your balcony haven is getting the size and height of your plants correct. Plant vertically, with climbing plants and plants which will dangle off balconies. Avoid plants which will grow too big and focus on what’s functional for the space. To create the illusion of extra space hang mirrors on the balcony walls, select furniture which doubles up as storage and compact appliances. Use light and bright colours and make the space feel more open and dangle fairy lights for a cosy atmosphere. Small gardens don’t have to be sterile.

7. Moroccan Garden

Credit: Lindsey LaMont/Unsplash

Feeling down about being unable to travel abroad this year? Instead transform your garden into something which resembles a warmer climate and bring your lost summer holiday home. Designs inspired by Moroccan gardens and architecture are a great way to liven up your garden in the summer and stand out from your neighbours. Perfect for re-styling a tired courtyard, Moroccan style gardens are inspired by their climate as well as French and Moorish designs. Key to perfecting a Moroccan garden is the use of colour, think cobalt blue, bright red, emerald as well as mustard yellows and pinks. Intricate mosaic tiles, water features, carved wooden furniture, lanterns and awnings will also add to the charm of a Moroccan garden. Just make sure your choices are weather appropriate.

Plant wise consider succulents, cacti, palms, aloes, aeoniums and foliage. As well as fragrant flowers and plants. The biggest obstacle for creating a Moroccan inspired garden is the climate, however you could use Terracotta pots for plants which will need to come inside for the winter.

8. Gravel Garden

Credit: Rachel/Unsplash

Gravel gardens are an ideal low maintenance choice. Working out on average cheaper than turf, the gravel can come in a range of sizes and colours to complement the rest of your garden. Your gravels colour should also match the exterior of your home. Real Homes suggest earthy brown for homes built with traditional materials and cooler tones for more contemporary builds.

Climate consideration is also important. The key to a gravel garden is drought resistant plants. In order for drought resistant plants to thrive, they’ll need to be somewhere which can be well drained, its also worth noting some of these plants will struggle in persistently rainy weather. Decorative aggregates suggest using silver foliage plants to resemble a hotter climate. Lavender, Rock Rose, and Euphorbias are also good options. Alternatively, as a safer option, you can always use the gravel as a border around your plants if your back garden sees a lot of rain.

9. Tropical Garden

Credit: Sonnie Hiles/Unsplash

One of the harder styles to recreate due to temperature constraints but nonetheless rewarding is a tropical garden. Tropical plants came to the UK during the Victorian times, often found in botanical gardens, but you don’t need a giant greenhouse to recreate an exotic garden at home.

The hardest part of recreating a tropical garden at home is finding plants which are both tropical but also durable. House Beautiful lists a range of plants which fit the tropical vibe but will be able to survive in a colder climate. These include Chusan palms (popular for their fan-shaped leaves), Ginger Lily (bright orange), Arum Lilies and Fatsia plants. Other plant choices which appear tropical but will survive in colder climates are Dwarf fan palms, Cabbage palms and Lady Fern. Middle-sized garden recommends layering your tropical plants and using taller plants to create a ‘jungle canopy’ which will resemble naturally occurring jungle plants as well as doubling as a protective barrier in the winter. Alternatively, you can always plant all your weather sensitive plants in pots and bring them in for the winter.

10. Wildlife Garden

Credit: Ana Paula Grimaldi/Unsplash

Perhaps the most natural and environmentally friendly choice, the goal of a wildlife inspired garden is to create a mini woodland on your doorstep.

As you’re creating a garden which has a naturally occurring appearance detailed planning is less important than other more stylised choices. Create a path which is winding dotted with moss and allow your flowers to grow in a more un-uniformed style. The central, and arguably most rewarding, part of creating your wildlife garden is to produce an environment in which nature will thrive. So, think garden ponds, insect-friendly spaces, pollinator plants and wildflowers in abundance. Country Living lists ideal plants for a wildlife garden as cornflower, corn marigold, poppies, daisies, and chamomile. Water features, birdbaths and bird boxes will also encourage more creatures to make your garden their home. Finish with some natural wooden furniture to sit and enjoy your new wildlife sanctuary from.

A garden is much more than just preparing a section of your outdoor space for growing vegetables or flowers. It also provides other benefits including helping the environment or providing stress relief by giving you a place to lose yourself in nature and forget about your troubles.

Gardening offers valuable exercise in the form of raking, mowing and digging and there is some evidence to suggest it can reduce the risk of dementia.

Gardens are important to the planet. Plants and trees grow there, taking in carbon and releasing oxygen. Through their pollinating activities, many insects are essential to the lifecycle of the world at large and your garden can help them flourish.

If you want to have a positive impact and be part of the solution to environmental deterioration instead of the problem, create a garden. The benefits for you, your family and the environment are undeniable.

Here are some ways to create your very own outdoor oasis

1. Grazers

Our plants are precious to us… so is all our garden wildlife. Grazers uses specific calcium and plant extracts to give plants the ability to resist pest attacks, leaving everything healthy for wildlife to thrive.

What’s eating your plants this spring? Rabbits, pigeon, deer and geese – use Grazers G1.

Slugs and snails – use Grazers G2. Cabbage white butterfly and aphids – use Grazers G3.

Red lily beetle – use Grazers G4.

When applied to green photosynthesising leaves and stems, the calcium-based, environmentally safe Grazers products work by creating a ‘plant-mediated effect’ that dissuades the pests from eating these plants. The indigenous pests then seek other nearby food sources instead while your plants to thrive, helped in their growth by the calcium nutrient in the products.

Grazers benefits not only your plants but also the predators of the plant pests, thereby keeping the natural wildlife food chain in place.

3. Johnsons Lawn Seed

Patchy lawns have been consigned to history. New from Johnsons Lawn Seed is Tuff Grass
– a scientifically proven dog patch resistant lawn seed.

ATCO’s long history of keeping it short began in 1921 ago and to mark 100 years since the launch of this iconic British brand, ATCO has created an exciting range of Centurion front-cut mowers – celebrating a heritage of providing ‘the finest cut of all’ for a century!

The new Centurion range offers great cutting and mulching performance – these are strong versatile machines that can tackle large gardens with ease. The front-mounted deck not only provides greater visibility of the cutting path in front, but also allows you to cut closer to the edges than ever before.

These mowers provide a smooth, high quality cut every time, as the cutting deck and power unit move independently allowing the deck to float and follow the ground contour. In addition, dedicated mulching machines fertilise the lawn as you cut by returning valuable nutrients back into the ground.

As much as you want things to run smoothly, sometimes things just don’t go to plan. Checklist spoke to the Furniture & Home Improvement Ombudsman on what the law says when it comes to garden landscaping.

With summer finally around the corner many will be turning to garden upgrades and makeovers as the weather improves and lockdown restrictions begin to ease. Hard and soft landscaping will add texture, character and structure to outside spaces, with rewards to be reaped by summer once the grounds are in full bloom.

There may however be instances in which landscaping projects don’t go to plan, leaving traders unable to reinstate gardens back to what they originally were. Consumers often expect a full refund if things go wrong, however what would be the ‘law of the land’ or a reasonable solution in these circumstances?

It’s not uncommon for garden remodelling projects to contain aspects of supply of goods, provision of services and a combination of both, overseen by a project manager. This can further be complicated if sub-contractors are used for different aspects of the work – for example, a specialist tree-surgeon might be required for preparatory works, while an electrician might be needed for lighting effects. Therefore, even without the unreliable nature of the weather, such projects can be notoriously difficult.

Supply of goods

A consumer’s rights in relation to goods are straightforward where goods are supplied in isolation, but this will rarely be the case in landscape gardening. That said, a free-standing outdoor piece of furniture (such as a bench) which does not conform to contract would be subject to a short-term right to reject, allowing customers to seek a full refund. Following expiry of that 30-day period, consumers may be entitled to either a repair or replacement. The trader has one opportunity to carry this out and if the matter is still not resolved, a full or partial refund may be awarded.

Supply of services

Where services are not carried out with reasonable care and skill within a reasonable time, consumers are entitled to a repeat performance at no extra cost. This must also be carried out within a reasonable time and without significant inconvenience to them, failing which they may be entitled to a price reduction which could be up to 100%.

Goods and services

But what about a scenario where a trader has carried out a design, lifted lawns and removed trees (service); supplied plants, or products such as weed control and furniture (goods), built a summer house (a combination of goods and services) and in doing so has literally changed the landscape, so that to put the outdoor area back in the condition before the work began would be very difficult?

In such cases customers may be able to treat this as a breach of requirement for services as well as for goods, and can therefore choose to use either the route of services remedies or goods remedies.

Practical advice

If the works specified originally become impossible, while a price reduction or full refund might be the legal remedy, the business could work with the customer to agree to a variation from the contract which would allow for the works to be completed, with whatever amendments are required to finish the job. Any such variations should be in writing; give the customer the option to walk away and ensure any price reduction is reflective of the revised specification.

At the outset of any project, having the right paperwork at the right time, is not only a legal requirement, but can also reduce complaints and aftercare issues. A checklist to ensure best practice etiquette and to evidence sign-offs can also be useful to have in advance. If a trader engages a sub-contractor, they are also responsible for their work being completed with reasonable care and skill and for any remedy arising if they are not.

By Laura Forsyth

Sun’s out, fun’s out! The warmer weather is finally here, which can only mean one thing; picnic season.

However this time around, we are all the more aware of savouring a quality picnic now that we appreciate the luxury of being allowed in the sunshine with loved ones again.

So whether you fancy going all out for a special occasion or are simply looking for a few extra additions to jazz up your average outdoor dining session, we’ve got you covered.

The whole package

Turn any setting from drab to fab, whether you are hitting a park in town or relaxing your own garden with the right alfresco accessories.

Make your picnicking experience a comfortable one with a camping chair, like one from Outdoor World Direct. This oversized, basin style chair folds away to a compact size so it can easily be carried on public transport or put into the boot of the car.

No picnic is complete without some plates and these ones from Alliance Online are no exception. Coming in a stylish baby blue, they will be perfect for any occasion.

Incredibly durable and lightweight, the St Tropez inspired jug from Cambridge not only looks great for serving drinks, but is a fantastic alternative to single use plastic.

Hamper heaven

Another season of snacking in the park is upon us. But there will be no soggy sandwiches on our watch!

Upgrade your alfresco lunch with a pre-made picnic and take the hassle out of prep. Ibrica have created perfectly formed Mediterranean inspired hampers just in time for the return of socialising, such as their Estrella Galicia Picnic Hamper.

Take delight in an indulgent outdoor afternoon tea like an incredible hamper from Piglet’s Pantry. Tuck into an assortment of treats delivered to the door and celebrate spring together in a special and unique way.

If you just fancy a nibble, then Belazu have a selection of indulgent nut mixes such as their Luxury Truffle and Pecorino cheese. Cartwright & Butler have curated a mouth-watering range of preserves too, whether you prefer jam and scones or chutney and crackers for your outdoor indulgence.

Picnic and mix some drinks!

If you’re looking forward to picnics in the park and drinks in the garden with friends and family, why not get your picnic hampers and garden bars stocked and ready with the best cans and bottles to celebrate with?

Long Shot bring the holiday vibes closer to home, thanks to their low ABV tipples – a fruit-infused hard seltzer that’s low calorie, has all-natural ingredients and tastes great.

For that extra bit of luxury, CIROC have many flavours that sit among its well known Original bottle such as Red Berry and Pineapple which are perfect flavours for sunny picnics. Meanwhile Wanderlust Wine, deliver sustainable organic, organically farmed and biodynamic wines from lesser-known producers right to your front door.

Little ones can enjoy soft drinks brand Soda Folk – they offer a classic range of American-style sodas all free from unnecessary ingredients and preservatives. Their Soda Folk Grape and Cream Soda even won a Gold Star each at last year’s Great Taste Awards.

Set the scene

Picnics are great for any occasion, from birthday parties, anniversaries or simply to celebrate reuniting with loved ones.

Which means you will need a perfect summer speaker for picnic parties and garden grooves. The portable and lightweight Groov-e Wave II is a budget-friendly portable speaker that packs a serious punch.

Practicing the art of self care is important too, so why not indulge in a solo picnic party? Groov-e also have the Ultra Bluetooth Headphones, which are ideal for listening to your favourite music, podcast or guided meditation in the park.

If you’d rather sit back and enjoy a good book, you can protect your Kindle from overheating with a gorgeous e-reader case from Twelve South.

To see your company in any upcoming features we are arranging please email laura@hurstmediacompany.co.uk or editorial@hurstmediacompany.co.uk
