Getting a license

The first thing to consider when getting a motorbike is to make sure you’ve got the right license. Unlike driving a car, there are various classifications, and each type comes with restrictions and requirements. For a start, you must have a provisional licence in place – as you cannot begin learning to ride a motorbike without one. Then there’s Compulsory Basic Training: without completing it you can’t legally ride a bike on the road. Buying insurance

Just as you can’t ride a motorbike legally without the right license, you’ll need the right insurance, too, with it being a legal requirement to obtain a minimum of third-party-only insurance. This provides cover for any damage you could cause to a third party’s person or property, but has no cover for your own. Then there’s third party, fire and theft: including everything under third party but also allowing you to claim off your own policy if your bike’s stolen or damaged as a result of fire. Motorcycle gear

Now you’ve sorted your license and motorbike, it’s time to choose your riding gear. First up is a helmet, legally required on the road. A full-face helmet is considered safest, and you can also choose half and three-quarter face-covering options. And while helmets are the only equipment riders are legally required to wear, consider other protective gear such as boots, gloves, and leathers. We’re not talking a full MotoGP-style bodysuit, but leathers, suitable footwear and durable gloves are must-buys for protection when you’re out on the road.

The best bike for you

Bikes are typically divided into standard, cruiser, sport, touring, dual-purpose and off-road categories. Motoress advises you consider the roads and time you’ll be spending on the bike, as well as speed, handling, budget, storage, and fuel economy. The most common is standard, great for getting about opposed to style. Cruisers are American-style choppers – think Harley-Davidson rider along Route 66 – while sport focus on speed and handling. 2. Ducati

1. Charlotte Sefton

The communications manager at the McLaren F1 team is no stranger to being seen behind the cameras, protecting the two drivers – Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, from the media.

The familiar face in the paddock is responsible for maintaining the high-quality reputation of the team during race weekends and helps deal with the press, making sure that the drivers act on their best behaviour (well she tries her best to keep them under control!).

The goofy and amusing relationship between herself and Lando that is portrayed on McLarens YouTube page and interviews, has proven to be popular amongst the fans, making her a well-known figure within the sport.

2. Susie Wolff

The team principal of the Venturi Formula E team, Susie Wolff, helped lead them to success, allowing them to win three races and 11 podiums during the 2021 season.

Having started her motorsport career in karting and then progressing through the rankings, she took part in the first practise session in Silverstone for Williams in 2014.

Her husband is the other famous Wolff (Toto – team principal of the Mercedes F1 team) and alongside driving the team to victory, she also juggles her other job as mother to her young son.

3. Sophie Eden

Sophie joined the Williams F1 team in 2011 and is the head of communications. In charge of keeping the team connected, she is a loyal member who plays a vital role in managing the day-to-day communications between the team, drivers, and fans.

Having always had a passion for motorsports, she knew from a young age what she wanted to do and made sure she did everything possible to achieve this. From volunteering at local tracks to creating a PR agency, her determination, dedication, and success is admired.

4. Claire Williams

The legacy that follows Claire with the famous surname ‘Williams’, makes her a familiar face in the world of Formula 1. With her father, Sir Frank Williams, being a revolutionary figure within the sport, she took over as deputy team principal at his team (with her father holding onto the main title) at Williams, in 2013.

Her optimism, dedication and need to succeed reflected on the team alongside her hard-working drivers Nicholas Latifi and George Russell (whose talent landed him as the second Mercedes driver in 2022, partnered with 7x world champion Lewis Hamilton).

Halfway during the 2020 season, Claire withdrew from her title, however her ideologies and passion remains with the team.

5. Natalie Pinkham

The Sky Sports F1 presenter has been covering, reporting, and gracing the sport on our screens since 2012.

Before working for Sky, some may remember listening to her on BBC Radio 5 where she commentated the live F1 coverage and was a familiar face presenting Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Alongside travelling the world, appearing on TV’s during Formula 1 Grand Prix Weekends, and informing us on the latest F1 related news, she is a mother to two children and has recently gotten involved with a campaign in attempts to encourage more women into playing golf.

6. Jessica Hawkins

The British, W Series driver started her driving career karting at the young age of eight. Throughout the years, she progressed and became the British Karting Champion at age 12 and the Honda Cadet British Open Champion in 2008.

Not only is she a talented racer, but she is also a pro stunt driver in major films and holds a world record for driving the ‘world’s fastest lawnmower’.

In May 2021, she became a Driver Ambassador for the Aston Martin F1 team where she works closely with the team and their partners.

7. Angela Cullen

Angela Cullen is a familiar face on the Instagram pages of Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes F1 team.

The performance coach from New Zealand has built up her own social media following where she expresses her love for nature whilst maintaining a healthy, vegan lifestyle.

Being Hamilton’s sidekick, she is no stranger to being spotted on race weekends, taking him to the track, helping him out and just being a friendly face for him during what can be stressful weekends.

8. Sabine Schmitz

The two-time winner of the 24-hour race at Nürburgring and friend of the show Top Gear, was an influential figure in the growth of women in the sport. She competed and won in multiple different races which lead to the opportunities of guest starring on Top Gear in 2004 to then present it in 2016.

The ‘Queen of the Nürburgring Ring’ sadly passed away in March 2021 after nearly a four-year long battle with cancer. She is greatly missed by everyone involved with the sport.

9. Laia Sanz

Laia grew up in Spain, being no stranger to the roaring sound of engines due to her family’s passion for motorbikes. The love she had for the need of speed grew and she eventually made her racing debut at age seven.

Since then, she has won many motorcycle championships and has recently ventured into Extreme E racing, where she is partnered alongside rally legend and father of Ferrari driver, Carlos Sainz for the team Acciona | Sainz.

10. Jamie Chadwick

Jamie started her racing career with karting at 11-years-old, where she achieved multiple podiums and wins. Since then, she has won racing scholarships and has been a part of the Aston Martin Racing Driver Evolution Academy. In 2019, she was crowned champion of W series and is once again fighting for the title in 2021.

In 2019, it was announced that she would be the development driver for Williams F1 team where she works with the team at Grand Prix’s and back at their headquarters in Oxfordshire.

Checklist catches up with the eight-times British national dancing champion about his newfound passion, tattoos, and all things ginger.

So, you learnt to ride during lockdown 2020 – were you into bikes as a child?

I fell in love with motorcycling at a young age, biking was always something I wanted to do. My mum would always try to put me off – it doesn’t matter how old you are, your mum always gets worried about you! I kept telling her I wasn’t into fast superbikes, – for me, it’s about cruising and a chilled ride rather than speeding around.

I grew up in Bordon, Hampshire and there were army tracks where we played on our scramblers. I never knew when, but I always knew one day ride a ‘proper’ bike. When I was younger my brother had a bicycle and he wouldn’t slow down – and because I wasn’t in control, I put my foot in the wheel and damaged my heel. Even today I will never get on the back of someone else’s bike – I only feel safe when I’m fully in control.

Which bike did you do your CBT test on?

I wasn’t paying attention when I booked my CBT and I ended up doing an automatic test instead of a manual. On the same day, my brother was doing a manual test elsewhere. The bike I had already purchased was from Crazy Horse – a beautiful Fantic Caballero, it’s a scrambler 125cc and you guessed it…a manual.

So, I did my test on the automatic and then I had to book in for a private lesson for a couple of hours to understand how to work the manual bike. The first bike I had was a Fantic 125cc, the amazing thing about the bike that it looks the same size as all the other powerful versions (the 250cc and 500cc) in the same range – it’s incredible really.

Were you a natural?

I passed my theory test the first time, and then, because of filming and restrictions, I had just two weeks to do the CBT. I booked my mod one on a Monday and the mod two on the next Wednesday. There are no rules on how many lessons you need to take.

It was a risk to book the two tests so close to each other as to take Mod 2 you have to you have to pass Mod 1 – but I did thank goodness! I had limited time on my side as I had to isolate before the Strictly show so I needed to pass the modules in that short space of time.

Did you learn any other hobbies during lockdown?

I always loved cooking, but I am really into graphic design and drawing and over the last lockdown – I learnt to tattoo! At first, I got myself a stick-and-poke kit and began practising on silicone.

I realised it was going to be a lot easier tattooing myself, so I went for it and now I’ve got three tattoos on one leg. For my birthday my family got me a proper tattoo machine; a few tattoo artist friends gave me some pointers, so I’ve now started on the other leg!

Which bike do you have now?

It’s funny, I was walking about in London after things started to open up again and I saw this bike on the side of the street.  I took a picture of it thinking to myself – what is this beautiful machine? I found out it was an Indian Bobber 60, which is the company I’m now an ambassador for. So, I made contact, we started talking and that’s how it all came about and how I have one at home.

It’s a big step up at 1000cc, but I’m selling the other one at the moment as I don’t want to go back to it. I love the Indian bobber so much and Crazy Horse kindly hooked me up again. I went to check out their new Chief model recently, it’s even more powerful – so that’s next on my list!

Which gives you the biggest buzz – dancing or riding?

Dancing I’ve done all my life, I enjoy it and it’s something that just comes naturally to me and I love learning new moves. But riding, especially when the streets are quiet you can just flow around. As I said, I’m not about speeding, it’s just so nice to just go for a calm ride – even if it’s not anywhere in particular – just literally a ride.

If you could go for a bike ride with anyone – who would it be?

I’m a big Liverpool fan, so if he could ride, I would love to drive with Liverpool’s James Milner, or even Klopp – just to know how his brain works! Even though I’m a dancer – I love sport, especially football.

What else is coming up for you?

We’ve got the new series of Strictly until December. Once a week I Wakesurf at Thorpe park on the lake. I don’t care if it’s a lake, a river, or the sea, or if it’s freezing; that’s where I need to live!

Then there is the Gingerland tour which I created celebrating everything about gingers! I always joke with friends about how suddenly ginger hair has become trendy – and it certainly wasn’t that way when I was at school! It’s been postponed so many times but is definitely happening in 2022 – and we’ll be travelling all around the UK.

The whole show is about, yes, you guessed it – being ginger. Featuring historical gingers, myths about gingers, things people might not know about gingers as a whole. It has singing and dancing and will hopefully educate people on the history of ginger hair. I might even sing one or two songs – we will hopefully have a few original soundtracks created especially for Gingerland.

Lastly, I have a podcast: Tall, Blonde, and Ginger, which is up to its third recording season. I do the podcast with my two friends and we have some really interesting guests coming up. We’re all retired competitors with completely different personalities, so it works well. We tackle everyday topics – it’s light-hearted and funny and about the way we all look at the world right now.

The ban is part of what Prime Minister Boris Johnson has described as a “green industrial revolution” to tackle climate change and create jobs in industries such as nuclear energy. The aim is to achieve net zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the UK by 2050. Transport is the largest source of such emissions, accounting for 34 per cent in 2019.

Changes over recent years to road tax, as Vehicle Excise Duty is commonly called, have encouraged the use of less polluting cars and now, according to the latest analysis from the leading online vehicle marketplace Auto Trader, the sale of new EVs could overtake petrol and diesel sales by as early as 2025. And a recent survey of nearly 2,000 drivers, commissioned by car benefits provider Tusker, revealed that 63 per cent of drivers were considering an EV for their next car. Out of this percentage, drivers cited environmental benefits, being able to charge at home and being taxed less on their salary as the top three main reasons.

Although all new conventional petrol and diesel cars and vans are to be banned from sale in 2030, hybrids, that is those that run on a combination and electric and petrol/ diesel power, will be given a stay of execution until 2035, on the condition they are capable of covering a “significant distance” in zero- emission mode.

To help facilitate the transition to EVs cars, £1.3 billion is being invested in charging points across England. Government grants are available through the Office for Low Emission Vehicles towards the cost of selected new electric vehicles. For qualifying models, the grant is for 35 per cent of the retail price, up to a maximum of £3,000. A similar grant scheme also operates for low-emission vans and motorcycles.

Also, electric cars are exempt from car tax, in both the first and subsequent years, as they emit zero CO2. Those cars costing more than £40,000 are also exempt from the ‘expensive car supplement’ until 31 March 2025.

This means that the clock is very much ticking for petrol and diesel cars, with only 10 years left for buyers to purchase these vehicles new. However the short term, you still shouldn’t expect too much to change, because most of us will change cars at least once more in that time.

But as we inch closer to the ban, it will become more common for drivers to see increasing discounts on any remaining new petrol and diesel cars and vans. Meanwhile, there will be more incentives created to get you driving around in an electric model instead. Similar to what is already happening today, consumers will see more fully electric models go on sale. This way, buyers have as much choice as possible and are able to get used to the idea of going electric.

The UK’s decision to bring forward the ban will put us ahead of France, which intends to ban non-electric cars from 2040. It also puts us on a par with Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands, all of which have already confirmed a 2030 ban.
