If you’re gasping for some fresh air and yearning for a change of scenery you can hit the road for a great – or even small – escape.

Whether your boots were made for walking; you fancy a green e-cycling trip; heading for the hills by car or a home-from-home campervan or exploring great restaurants, hotels and bars the possibilities for adventure and getting out and about are endless.

Here are some suggestions to help you on your way.

1. Twisper

Far from the world of al fresco dining and fresh harvests, the UK’s culinary tradition has revolved around roasting, stewing and battering meat or fish. But where its food culture really shines is in the social rituals behind every gathering, such as a hearty Sunday roast with friends and family, or a delicious, all-day, full English breakfast at your favourite pub.

TWISPER, the social travel app, advocates sharing positive experiences like these. Post a photo on the app of an amazing experience you had at your favourite restaurant or pub or, if some of your favourite places offer delivery, support them by posting about the amazing experience of eating their food at your own dining table.

With a fast-growing community of more than 100,000 users, TWISPER is a social travel app to discover and share great restaurants, hotels and bars. The app is ad-free, privacy-focused and socially driven.

The Wayfarers is a UK-based company with 35 years’ experience. Let them help you plan a week-long luxury vacation that fits your budget, with the right amount of walking, sightseeing and any other activities you wish to include.

Want to add fly-fishing, golfing, yoga or a spa visit to your stay? No problem!
Ways to cut CO2 emissions have never been more vital – and carbon-friendly transport is in vogue. Here are four of E-go bike’s fantastic foldable electric bikes for greener, cleaner travel.

Lite: A very successful top-selling portable folding bike that really packs a punch with its 36-volt 250W motor powered by a 6.4Ah LG battery to give a range of up to 50km. It weighs just 15kg, and can be folded in seconds to put in the car boot.

Lite+: similar to the “Lite” but with the addition of larger wheels, 7-speed Shimano gears and a 7Ah Samsung battery. Weighs 18kg in total.

Max: A bigger bike all round with a huge 14Ah Samsung battery, 7-speed Shimano gears. It has a range of up to 90km and weighs 20kg.

Max+: The same size and design as the Max but with huge, 4.25″ fat tyres. Great on sand and other loose surfaces, it weighs 25kg.

5. Ring Smart Tyre Inflator

Tyres are the most important safety feature of any car; they are what keep you connected to the road, and they need to work at optimum performance whatever the conditions. Having well-maintained tyres also reduces fuel consumption and improves the tyre’s lifespan, saving you money.

The NEW Ring Smart Tyre Inflator is the easy way to ensure your tyres are well maintained and safe. It works in conjunction with the Ring Connect App. Ring Connect is the expert you need in your pocket, ensuring your tyres are inflated properly and well maintained. All car tyres are different and require different maintenance, from optimum inflation levels to mileage before they need changing. Ring Connect ensures you’ve got everything right and regularly reminds you to undertake the checks you need.

In these days of smartphones with an app for everything – what’s the point of a dedicated GPS device? Well, despite advances in smartphone technology, dedicated GPS gadgets like the Satmap Active 20 Outdoor GPS have been designed to one job – and do it really well, namely, to enable you to explore more and stay safe at the same time.

This device boasts a whopping 25mm GPS antenna which stays locked on with 50cm accuracy when most smartphones have given up the ghost (after being disconnected from “assisting” 4G and Wi-Fi data). Then there’s the ruggedness thing – There are a lot of smashed up smartphone screens which really don’t like being dropped on rocks or being drenched for hours on end. And then there’s the dual-control. Touchscreens are just great – mostly – however there are environments (heavy rain, sweat, dust and mud) when switching to “all-button” control is a real bonus.

Now it’s available in 55 stock sizes that will fit any dog, from a Chihuahua to a Great Dane, and in 14 colours. Equafleece is proud to manufacture its products in Britain.

Its fleece dog garments are warm, lightweight, easy to wear and made from the same high performance polyester fleece you’ll find in advanced mountaineering wear.

Here are some suggestions that are far closer to home.

1. Under The Doormat

Have you been thinking of a low-risk staycation for when restrictions are eased? Under The Doormat can help you with that.

Under The Doormat is a luxury short-term rentals company, which means you can have the quality of a hotel in the comfort of a home. They offer the perfect home from home experience, including a 10-point hygiene promise and peace of mind pledge.

Homestays are an excellent option for those who want to have their own space and reduce contact with others on their trip. Under The Doormat has more than 300 homes across London and all have been personally selected and meet high standards to become a part of an exclusive portfolio.

10. Visit Faroe Islands

Jetsetters in search of breath-taking natural scenery can travel from London Gatwick to Vágar Airport, in the Faroe Islands with Atlantic Airways, the Faroese national carrier direct flight.

The weekly Tuesday route will offer a shorter journey time to the Faroe Islands with a flight time of just two hours 10 minutes. This is a greener alternative too, saving on the emissions of the additional take-off and landing in Copenhagen that is always involved with connecting flights.

The Faroe Islands, sandwiched between Nordic neighbours Iceland and Norway, offer vast, untamed, and spectacular landscapes that are immediately impressive and undeniably compelling.

Travellers are often made small by the grandiosity of the natural environment; the daunting sea cliffs, the unforgiving waves that ripple against the coastline, the lush green valleys surrounded by steep mountains.

The Faroe Islands will also see the opening of the islands’ first international hotel brand – a four-star Hilton Garden Inn.

Whether you want to go across the world or down the road, there are endless possibilities out there for the post-COVID traveller. Whatever your budget, these ideas will fulfil your travel dreams while giving you a bit of space

1. A slice of British history that’s always open

Credit: DeFacto / Wikimedia.
Castles are the most lasting symbol of British history and culture – so much that they’ve become somewhat unfashionable. If you live in England, there’s probably one not far from you, and you would probably drive past it without paying it the slightest attention.

But since the pandemic hit, they’ve undergone a revival. To many, they offer a local attraction that holds a bit more significance than just going for a walk – you may even be able to cram in a bit of historical education for the kids (or yourself).

English Heritage looks after more than 100 castles from the Scilly Isles to Berwick, so their online castle map is a good place to start. What’s particularly appealing about them right now is that, as outdoor locations, they are almost always accessible – in fact, English Heritage kept 19 of its sites open even during national lockdown. Be sure to book your visit in advance and comply with local guidelines.

2. Get out and about without leaving the car

This is the year of the drive-through attraction, given the safety factor that staying in your car provides. But it’s not all about drive-in movies – a lot more activities are now available to enjoy from behind the wheel.

Drive-in stand-up comedy, music concerts and even bingo are also taking place at sites nationwide. Companies such as @TheDriveIn and Drive & Dine Theatre led this trend during 2020 – it’s worth checking out their listings to see what they have planned next. Since most performers have been starved of opportunities, the calibre of comedian or musician they are able to attract has been excellent – and you may even be able to attend if you don’t have a car, thanks to the availability of private domes. Swanky!

If you want a totally different experience, opt for a drive-in safari to get close to wildlife without the need for a long-haul flight or a tour guide. Knowsley and Longleat are two well-known UK safari parks, but there are more than you think, so check online to see what’s near you.

3. Explore the urban environment

It might feel like it’s harder to safely get out and about in a city – but look beneath the surface and you’ll uncover hidden opportunities. There are free walking tours available in just about every major city in the world – some of them taking place daily.

If you’re in an unfamiliar place, these can be invaluable in giving you an insight into the city’s history, culture and key spots. But you’d be surprised how much you can discover about a city you’ve lived in for some time – it’s worth trying one and seeing. Plus, many walking tours have reworked themselves into a socially-distanced format.

Once thought of as the preserve of the backpacker or shoestring-budget tourist, free walking tours have grown in number and reputation as more and more people discover their appeal.

4. Upgrade your camping trip

Campsites are reporting record bookings for 2021 as British holidaymakers opt for a ‘staycation’ that meets a budget and allows them to avoid unnecessary contact or having to share facilities with other people, which you might get in a hotel or resort.

If your tastes are a little more upmarket, look for a glamping site where you can camp in style – in anything from a pod to a log cabin to a converted train carriage.

Alternatively, roam the country with a campervan holiday, which offers almost total freedom (in England you can only park overnight at a registered site, while in Scotland you can ‘wild camp’ on most unenclosed land, subject to local byelaws). You don’t have to spend a fortune on your own motorhome – van sharing sites allow you to rent other people’s campervans while they are unused.

5. Sail the British waterways

A boating holiday might conjure up images of a superyacht, but there are ways to spend time on the water without spending an extortionate amount – or even heading to the coast. Britain’s ample network of canals affords the opportunity for a narrowboat holiday – another experience that may have been out of favour for some time but is now undergoing a resurgence.

You don’t need a licence to operate a narrowboat, and if you rent one from one of the bigger waterway holiday companies, some steering tuition will come with the package. That said, a bit of planning will still go a long way – in terms of both your intended route and of waterway etiquette. Want a tip on where to go? Meander from Reading to Bristol along the Kennet and Avon Canal, or enjoy a peaceful, relatively lock-free cruise along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.

6. Go remote without leaving the country

Who says you have to travel to the end of the earth to get a sense of isolation? A number of companies now specialise in secluded holidays in the UK – even the National Trust is getting on board. And while there are certainly wilder destinations to be found in the world, you can still get an off-the-grid feeling with just a few hours’ domestic travel.

The Scottish Highlands are where you’ll find the greatest number of suitable locations – for the ultimate experience, head to one of the lesser-visited Scottish islands such as Eigg or Rùm. But you don’t even have to travel that far. Find yourself a lakeside cottage in Cumbria, a farmhouse in the Yorkshire Dales, explore the coastline in Pembrokeshire, or nestle in a hillside cottage in Devon.

7. Go overseas: The island holiday

What constitutes a ‘safe’ place in terms of COVID risk is down to debate, but islands have consistently rated as among the safest destinations since the pandemic began. That means there’s no better time for an island-hopping break – and the good news is you don’t need to travel too far to have one.

In Europe, Madeira is one location that’s been actively trying to attract the COVID-conscious tourist. Not far away in the Atlantic, the Canary Islands are a similarly appealing destination.

Of course, island holidays are always an option for those who really want to push the boat out too. Barbados, St Lucia, the Maldives and the Seychelles are all glamorous destinations that are open, welcoming tourists, and taking all necessary precautions.

8. Go overseas: The activity holiday

Activity or adventure holidays have always been popular among a subset of traveller. Now, their appeal is widening as their remote, outdoor nature takes on a universal appeal.

You don’t need to be a survival expert to enjoy an activity holiday – go walking in one of America’s many world-famous parks, or the Banff National Park in Canada, for a scenic challenge where you can still have a hot bath at the end of the day. If you have an affinity for water, head to South Africa for some world-class surf in the Eastern Cape, or diving in the Cape Town area. Closer to home, try skiing at Grenoble or Chamonix.

Most major holiday companies will offer specific packages catering to activity holidays, from the extreme to the family-friendly. The options are endless.

9. Go overseas: The off-the-beaten-track holiday

Take social distancing to the extreme – book a remote holiday in a destination that’s not found on most tourist lists, but nevertheless offers an ideal mix of adventure, culture and comfort. Throw a dart at a world atlas – or if that’s too random for your taste, take your pick from these three:

Costa Rica has a coastline on two oceans within a couple of hours’ journey of each other, but it’s the interior that will really amaze, with its breathtaking sights, long hikes and diverse wildlife.

Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls region is an alternative to the more obvious South African getaway that offers wildlife-spotting and river-cruising opportunities galore.

And while a south-east Asian trip may be a backpacking standard, Laos is still relatively untouched in this region. It’s got all the history and sights, but with fewer tourists.

10. Do it the right way: Sustainable travel

As reducing our impact and preserving the world’s resources becomes more important, more and more prospective travellers are looking for ways to ensure their trip doesn’t harm either the environment or the destination.

The most obvious way to do this is to reduce the carbon footprint of the trip, since travel accounted for an estimated 8% of global emissions before 2020. Sustainable choices, such as choosing short- over long-haul destinations, can mitigate this, but ultimately you’ll want to look into a carbon offsetting scheme. These have grown enormously in the last decade – have a look at Gold Standard or Climate Action Reserve to see what kinds of initiative you can fund.

Contrary to expectation, travelling in the post-COVID world might become more common, not less. But that doesn’t mean it’ll be exactly the same as before…

After a year of lockdowns and social distancing – in which travel opportunities have largely been limited to enviously scrolling through Instagram photos of sunlit beaches – it’s almost a cliché to say that our travel preferences will never be the same again. Does that mean we’ll be reluctant to travel far beyond our front doors ever again? If anything, it could be the opposite.

We may end up thinking of travel in a totally new way. It could be more normalised – a necessity rather than a luxury. Our time spent cooped up at home has made us all realise the importance of self-care, and getting some space and a change of scenery is the ultimate example of that. It’s been termed ‘wandermust’ – a fresh appetite for travel, not simply because we’ve got itchy feet but because we have come to appreciate its value on an essential level.

But, while we’ve not had much to do since lockdown began, one thing we’ve had in abundance is time to think. When it comes to travel, that means thinking about every aspect of a trip (whether domestic, short- or long-haul), what bits we really look forward to, and what we suffer through but could really do without.

Travellers in 2021 will be keen to have it their way: to craft their own experience rather than sticking to the obvious destinations and activities, to have everything they want and nothing they don’t, and to make their trips meaningful on a human, experiential level (rather than just checking off a list of attractions and taking selfies to prove we were really there).

What does all this mean, in practice? Here are a few examples:

We’ll challenge the notion that the holiday of a lifetime requires a 12-hour flight. You can go long-haul if you want to, of course, but many people are discovering equally memorable delights on their own doorstep.

Along with staycations comes the rise of the ‘workcation’: with so many people now working from home, we have found that we can stick a laptop in the travel bag and work from, well, anywhere.

The ‘bucket list’ trip still exists, but the destination may have changed. One travel agent reported that their three most popular long-haul destinations were Peru, Ecuador and… Antarctica.

A ‘life-changing experience’ is something travel companies are used to peddling, but now we really expect it – and not just for ourselves. Responsible tourism is on the rise, aiming to make a positive impact on destinations through techniques such as carbon offsetting, volunteering, or simply pumping revenue into areas that have been affected by a crisis.

When it comes to money, everyone is looking for value. Travellers have learned to challenge everything, and don’t want to pay for something they don’t need. In the world of last-minute reservations and travel apps, everyone wants to feel like they are getting a personalised experience.

So when should you book that big trip? No one can say what our recovery from the pandemic will look like, or when travel opportunities will ‘open up’ again. We’ve been waiting long enough – we know better than to make predictions. But there is no reason not to start doing your research, planning, and just a little bit of dreaming. Nearly everyone admitted to spending time looking for travel inspiration during lockdown. And what’s wrong with that? Half of the fun of a trip is in looking forward to it.

MILLIES WOLFHEART IS a name you should know when it comes to dog food. They have established themselves as one of the leading brands for working and sporting dog food in the UK, and it is easy to see why when you take a moment to look at their extensive range of premium quality products.

Millies Wolfheart is not afraid to break the mould and to innovate when it comes to developing foods and their ethos is simple: no compromise on quality. The company’s motto – to provide nothing but the best quality nutrition for dogs – has seen them achieve multiple awards. Their products have now been voted ‘Britain’s best dog food’ for three consecutive years.

Designing their foods based on the activity levels and intolerances a dog may have means they are bucking the trend of simply marketing foods aimed at the age of the dog. Millies Wolfheart ensure that each recipe is suitable for all life-stages and with a team of highly-qualified nutritionists on site it’s easy for a customer to get advice and find which of the range is
best suited to the needs of their dog.

As a company they are focused on being open and honest about ingredients and they take pride in what they have to offer. Their passion for education, dispelling the common myths about dog food and for quality without compromise have helped this brand become simply the best a dog can get.

MY TRIP TO… THE BAHAMAS

Seeing the pigs was sad

‘When I visited the Bahamas we took a boat out to see the famous pigs, but that was pretty screwed up! My understanding is that the locals realised that they could make a business out of taking tourists to see pigs on an island. They took a load of pigs out on a boat and left them there, and then started to charge tourists to go and see them. The pigs were angry and aggressive!’

Our villa was insane

‘We were in the Bahamas for a fitness retreat, staying on a private villa on a private beach – it had the picturesque white sand and insane blue sea you see on postcards. There were about 15 or 20 of us in total. My mate Wayne Lineker and I were the bad influencers in the group, as we did sneak out for a night to go and drink wine in a local bar!’

It was nice not to party

‘The best thing about the trip was having that time to bond with one of my close friends. Wayne and I have both always been known for our partying, so it was great to actually spend that time together in a non-party situation.’

Go and explore

‘My top tip is to get off the beaten track. The locals are amazing and so happy to talk to you. They’ll want to show you their culture and the less-known areas of the Bahamas, so get to know them and this can lead to the most incredible experience.’

MY TRIP TO… BALI

Fitness in paradise

‘I went on an adventure holiday and fitness retreat with Fifth Element Escapes. The business was created by these two insane fitness fanatics – Gemma is a well-known yoga instructor, and Buddy used to be a Royal Marine Commando, so the trips they put together are pretty unique. I can honestly say that this was the best fitness retreat I have ever been on.’

I loved every minute

‘The whole week was so special and while you didn’t have to do anything you didn’t want to take part in, I didn’t want to miss out on anything! From the moment you stepped off the plane, every detail had been thought of, and we travelled to an area of Bali that I’d never been to before, so I was made up to be a part of it.’

The yoga was unreal

‘Gemma took the yoga classes to a new level. As a part of the YIN practise she does, we were taken through one yoga pose that basically cuts off your circulation for a few minutes, so that after you’ve held that pose, you get this crazy rush of energy. I’ve never experienced anything quite like that before.’

Climb Mount Batur

‘We set off at 3am and hiked through the night, reaching the summit in time to watch the sunrise over the mountains. It’s just the most incredible experience and worth every second of the early start.’

MY TRIP TO… IBIZA

I don’t go mad like I used to

‘When I was younger, I used to go to places like Ibiza to party hard, but I can’t keep up anymore – I like to go for three or four days and I’ll set aside one day to have a party, then I’ll go and relax and enjoy what the island has to offer for the rest of the time.’

I mix where I stay

‘I stay in two places when I visit Ibiza – the Wi-Ki-Woo when I want to party, and the 7Pines resort in Cala Tarida when I want to relax. The Wi-Ki-Woo is the place to be when you want to really be in the mix of things, but the 7Pines gives you that bit more luxury when you’re ready to get away from it all.’

I supported Wayne

‘I flew to Ibiza to celebrate Wayne’s birthday and to visit his club. The best thing about my trip was definitely being there to support my friend at an important time in his life.’

Take things easy

‘My number one tip for Celebrity Secrets readers when visiting Ibiza has got to be… pace yourself!’

MY TRIP TO… MARBELLA

Marbs was so glam

‘I’ve been going to Marbella for a long time – I moved to the UK when I was 20, and Marbella was the first place I went to on holiday from there. Back then, it was so glamorous. I was 19 years old, and there were all these amazing girls in their bikinis, and I was like, “wow, this is where it’s at!”’

I stayed for a month

‘When I first visited Marbella it was my first real experience of being a “celebrity” – at that age, I felt like I’d made it! I was meant to only be there for two days for a club appearance at Linekers, which is where I first met Wayne. I ended up missing 22 flights home, stayed for four weeks, and was given a set of keys to Wayne’s apartment – and for his Ferrari!’

I’m so grateful for Marbella

‘Without Marbs I’d never have met Wayne and built up what has become a great friendship. That first time I arrived at Linekers, Wayne told me that he’d previously arranged for my dad to come and do a book launch for him, so it was great that he was now getting to work with his son. That felt special to me, like it was somehow meant to be that I was there, meeting him.’

MY TRIP TO… CHAMONIX

I climbed Mont Blanc for charity

‘I did the climb to raise awareness for the charity I’m a patron of, The National Association for Children of Alcoholics (Nacoa). We had to start climbing this training mountain, Gran Paradiso, which I thought was going to be easy. I put my 30kg bag on my back and halfway up, I thought to myself, I can’t do this. We had a team of 15 people and three had already dropped out. The guides told me that this is that point when it’s really a test of your mind, and that was what spurred me on to get to the top.’

There was no luxury

‘We spent the nights in little lodges with minimal water and soup and bread for a meal, then we’d just carry on climbing. We had to pass over a ravine known as the death ravine, because people have died there many times, which was terrifying.’

I was so proud to finish

‘When we eventually reached the top, I felt so elated. I don’t pretend that I’m an inspiration to people, but if I can use my platform in any way to help a situation that is important to me, then I’ll do whatever I can. Nacoa is a small charity and this awareness, and the fact that I could talk about them, really helped their cause.’

Make sure you’re prepared

‘If you think you want to climb Montt Blanc, don’t go ill-prepared. Get on the Stairmaster with a 40kg bag on your bag, because you are definitely going to need that training!’
