Ljubljana, Slovenia – diverse wine culture and local delicacies

The entertainment and royalty PR expert speaks to Checklist to give you the top tips on how to have a picture-perfect Platinum Jubilee Party fit for a Queen.

1. Pick a date to celebrate

It would be a tremendous faux-pas to celebrate 70 years of the Queen’s reign on the wrong date.

The Platinum Jubilee celebrations will be from Thursday, 2 June to Sunday, 5 June so there are a few options to pick a day to host your party.

2. Know your history

If you’re organising your street’s Platinum Jubilee party then the street’s kids will most likely expect you to be clued-up about royal matters. So you should know your basics, including that:

• The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952
• Her coronation took place on 2 June 1953; making Saturday, 2 June a very good day to hold your street party on.

3. Learn from history

If there are people on your street old enough to remember the Queen’s 1953 coronation, 1977 Jubilee and 2012 Diamond celebration then pick their brains about how these events were celebrated. Find out what food was laid on at street parties, what games were played and what music, if any, provided the soundtrack.

This is all useful inside information which could inform your street party plans. Bringing together the old and new is a fabulous way to fuse families and make your part that extra bit special.

4. Don’t delay in applying for permission

The government website has some very useful information about organising a royal street party. A street party is classified as being one which “takes place in one or two streets and is for neighbours only”.

You will need to inform your local council’s events or communities’ team four to 12 weeks ahead of your party. Expect to receive a small application form through the post.

If you find that it’s too late to get permission then why not consider holding a ‘street meet’ instead. These have less restrictions placed on them as they are just gatherings which take place in parks, driveways or cul-de-sacs.

5. The practicalities 

Think up a checklist like the one below.

• Appoint people to organise different parts of the party
• Send out invitations early and don’t leave anyone on your street out – a party poster displayed prominently on a few windows should ensure this doesn’t happen
• Make sure there is enough seating for everyone
• You’ll need the most solid tables to put the food on and other tables to decorate and dot around the party
• You will also need plenty of chairs, blankets and cushions, particularly if the party goes on into the evening
• Arrange a kids’ area away from the food, so as to not end up with a football in your Coronation chicken
• Organise a gazebo or two or extra parasols to help with the weather – be it a bit damp or very hot.

7. Decorations

Suitable decorations should give a royal theme to your street party. Craft companies have a great selection of Jubilee party supplies to make sure your street party is a successful one. Bunting, balloons and flags with the red, white and blue of the Union Jack will ensure that you and the kids can party like it’s 1953.

8. Food

Think British when choosing what snacks and treats to prepare for your party. Red, white and blue icing can give your street party cakes a patriotic atmosphere while coronation chicken and Victoria sponge cake are both foods with a royal theme. British classics such as Beef Wellington, pork pies, trifle and Bakewell tarts are sure-fire crowd-pleasers.

Now more than ever its time to celebrity the diversity that makes Britain great so speak to your friends and neighbours and get them to bring some fabulous food too that brings out their cultural heritage for all to celebrate.

9. What to wear

From fancy dress and Union Jacks to glam dresses and tailored suits – people up and down the country will be dressing up for this big occasion. From re-wearing old frocks to styling up existing wardrobe pieces its all about the street party catwalk.

Everyone needs to look and feel fabulous and it’s the perfect time to get out your finest and restyle it to look festive and feel great.

9. Activities

Keep the children active at Jubilee street parties by organising lots of activities. Setting up a face-painting stall on the street corner is a fabulous way of getting the party started – having a red, white and blue face is sure to be all the rage in early June.

You could also set up a table sale or a raffle stall to create some extra excitement or raise some money for good causes.

10. After the party

When you’re sending out the invitations, let your neighbours know the expected start and end times. Not all the neighbours will want to come to your party but they will want to know when the noise will begin and end.

Have lots of bin bags to hand when the party is in full swing so that you can clear away mess as you go along and don’t forget to have a team of little helpers to assist you with the clean-up operation after the party has ended.

And don’t forget to have fun; this Jubilee will go down in history and you are all a part of it.

1. Penshurst Place

2. Groombridge Place

Discover a beautiful country estate resting on the border between East Sussex and Kent, on the edge of the historic village of Groombridge. Visitors can enjoy a walk through the estate including along the canal path where you can find children’s play areas at Crusoe’s World including a fantastic pirate ship. Further into the enchanted forest visitors will find a new large wooden fort and the popular raised boardwalk. Or why not play hide and seek in and out of the tepees?

3. Bedgebury Pinetum and Forest

This is a centre for international conservation and hosts the most complete collection of conifers on one site anywhere in the world. There are many different paths for visitors to follow and it’s a wonderful place for a family adventure in the great outdoors.

4. The High Rocks

Found down a quiet country lane, this just a few minutes drive from Tunbridge Wells town centre, with ample parking for those driving to the location. With so much to offer The High Rocks has become one of the most attractive venues in the southeast of England.

5. Dunorlan Park

Not far from the centre of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Dunorlan Park is spacious and elegant with wide grassy slopes and magnificent views to the Weald. It is renowned for its amazing water fountain, Grecian temple and huge boating lake. Boats can be hired until the end of October.

6. Calverley Grounds

A lovely landscaped park of gardens located in the centre of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Calverley Grounds boasts attractive lawns and ornamental gardens, including an Italianate garden. This beauty spot has played host to a number of much loved annual events including the Mela, The Royal Tunbridge Wells Food Festival and the hugely popular winter ice rick and venue SKATE.

7. The Chalybeate Spring

Discovered over 400 years ago, by Lord North who felt rejuvenated from drinking the cool water, The Chalybeate Spring is situated in heart of the historic Pantiles. The Chalybeate spring water was served by someone called a ‘Dipper’ for a small fee; not for the water, which has always been designated as belonging to the people, but for being served the medicinal solution in a genteel fashion.

8. Scotney Castle

An English country house with formal gardens south-east of Lamberhurst in the valley of the River Bewl in Kent, this is not one to be missed for a wonderful day out with the family.

9. Sissinghurst Castle Garden

This National Trust garden was created by Vita Sackville-West and husband Harold Nicolson. It is one of the most famous gardens in England and has designated Grade I status. A must for all gardeners (and anyone else!).

2. Nice, France

Looking for a party? Nice’s carnival is held every February, with an abundance of events – cold water swims, waiter races and ‘flower battles’ where up to 100,000 flowers are thrown. 3. Granada, Spain

The mythical Spanish city of Granada is steeped in a concoction of cultures and religions, with glorious monuments and architecture. Granada was settled since ancient times by Iberians, Romans, and Visigoths and became a major city of Al-Andalus in the 11th century.

A calming, picturesque city, a stroll through the narrow streets of the Albaicín neighbourhood will lead you to witness one of the most incredible sights in the world, The Alhambra. One of Europe’s finest examples of Moorish architecture, the palace is a testament to Islamic architecture and its lasting influence on the continent. Awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1984, perched high up over the city, visitors bask in the sun as they stroll through the countless palace gardens, bath houses, and more.

Granada is one of the few remaining cities to serve free tapas. Many bars in the city will still provide tapas free of charge with any drink purchased.

4. Sevilla, Spain

A city steeped in similar history to Granada, Sevilla has a rich, multicultural history. Visiting the capital city of the Andalusia region of Southern Spain means discovering a very rich architectural and historical legacy, and diving into Spanish culture, sampling tapas, bullfighting, and more.

Bask in the sun and take a stroll through central Sevilla by the distinctively green Guadalquivir River, spanned by several ornate bridges connecting the city’s two halves.  

Visiting Seville’s Royal Alcázar Palace is a must for fans of Mudéjar architecture. Illumuniated by glorious sunshine, the structure showcases a grand, intriguing mix of Moorish and Mudéjar architecture, with looming archways and elegant internal courtyards.

5. Madeira, Portugal

No list of sunniest places in Europe could be complete without mentioning Madeira. Portugal’s southernmost inhabited location is one of the most popular destinations for UK tourists.

Very few destinations offer such a myriad of activities and pursuits. For adventure junkies and those keen to explore, hit the vera hiking paths that weave into the wooded mountains of the main island, with breath-taking views and one will encounter incredible native wildlife like the Madeiran wall lizard. For those after a more relaxing time, one can stick to the coast, where ocean-view bars and black-sand beaches, and kickback and relax under the sun. 

6. Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is a pearl of the Adriatic, a town located in Southern Croatia, it is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea.

Dubrovnik is one of the last remaining walled towns in the world. A walk through this sun-kissed town is a walk-through centuries of history. The stone walls hide beautiful buildings such as baroque St. Blaise Church, Renaissance Sponza Palace and more. It’s little wonder then, that in 1979 Dubrovnik was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, in recognition of its outstanding medieval architecture and fortified old town.

The uniqueness and visual appeal of Dubrovnik has seen the town become a prominent filming location for several high-profile TV series and films. Dubrovnik’s enclosed and walled location was the inspiration for the fictional city of King’s Landing and Qarth, two major cities in HBO’s Game of Thrones; as well as the location for Roger Corman’s 1964 war thriller The Secret Invasion.

7. Messina, Italy

Heading back to Italy, we have Messina. The third largest city on the island of Sicily, this sun-filled, harbour-city is an extremely popular tourist cruise ship destination.

It’s uniquely positioned geographical location means it offers a wide array of beautiful coastlines to choose from as soon as you dock in the town. Venture into the city and you’ll soon be in awe of the stunning locations and monuments, including the Norman built Cathedral and the Piazza del Duomo, numerous bell and clock towers, and Messina’s regional museum. The museum houses three sections – the painting gallery, sculpture collection, and archaeological section – all contain a selection of significant historical pieces.

8. Marseille, France

Located between the Mediterranean and the Alps, the climate in Marseille is characterised by long, hot summers. A city that fuses the new with the old, Marseille is a city unlike many others.

Located on the coast of the Gulf of Lion, part of the Mediterranean Sea near the mouth of the Rhône, it is little surprise Marseille has wonderful beaches. Plage de Prado houses the main family beaches. Spacious and picturesque, it is a great option for kids with its playgrounds, climbing walls, and skate parks. 

Marseille is home to many historical monuments and maritime museums and art galleries, and a wide selection of vintage restaurants and bars in the Old Port of Marseille. 9. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is an ever present in terms of high popularity with tourists, with Potugal’s capital brimming with culture, delicious food, historical sites, and of course great weather. Lisbon is a rewarding destination that combines beautiful old neighbourhoods with a vibrancy that make it one of Europe’s most exciting cities.

6. Elektra (Marvel)

Elektra portrayed by Jennifer Garner follows the story of a female assassin who must protect a man and his prodigy daughter from another assassin who was hired by The Hand.

7. Emma Frost (Marvel)

Emma Frost, also known as the White Queen, began as a supervillain and adversary of the X-Men. A mutant with telepathic ability, Emma first encounters the X-Men while she is the ‘White Queen’ of the dangerous Hellfire Club. 

8. Mystique (DC)

Mystique has been a supervillain, founding her own Brotherhood of Mutants and assassinating several important people involved in mutant affairs. A shapeshifter, Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) can assume the identity of other humans, often avoiding detection and being able to manipulate others.

9. Black Cat (Marvel)

Felicia Harding is a sexy, femme fatale thief known as the Black Cat. Following in the footsteps of her father a renowned cat burglar, she assumes the cat persona in an attempt to attract Spider-Man. Eventually, they began a relationship but anyone who crosses her path is subject to bad luck. Black Cat is currently in production with Amber Heard to make her Marvel debut.

10. Enchantress (DC)

Cara Delevingne stars as June Moone, the Enchantress. Joining the Suicide Squad, Justice League Pact and Shadowpact. June has superpowers that turn her from being a superhero into a supervillain. The Enchantress uses magic and has limitless powers. She has the ability to conjure terrors, manipulate minds, teleport and fly.
