Looking to build strength, improve posture, and feel more energised – and without leaving your front door? Sounds good to us; especially now it’s getting chillier by the minute. Abby McLachlan, Pilates Instructor & Founder of East of Eden, explains just how effective it can be, as well as the best exercises to start with, and how to create a simple 20 minute routine you can fit into a busy day.

“If you commit to a regular practice – even 15 minutes a day – Pilates is really beneficial,” says Abby. “However, it’s important to have good form, so always practice with some classes first with a qualified Pilates teacher, to ensure you have the proper alignment as well as understanding my terminology below.” Know what a Cat-Cow means after those lessons – as well as getting the seal of approval from that qualified instructor? You’re ready to go for it at home.

Pilates roll down

“This is a great exercise to mobilise the spine, as well as engaging the core and the top layer of your stomach muscles, to control the movement. It also enables you to stretch out the hamstrings. Often Pilates sessions start with a roll down to set up the class.”

Pilates toe taps

“These are done laying face upwards. Here, your core muscles are engaged – your deep abdominal muscles in particular – especially, as you lower one bent leg at a time, from a tabletop start position, to tap your toe on the floor.”

The 100

“Again lying on your back, start by bringing your head, neck and shoulders down on each slow inhale of breath, having your feet flat on the floor before progressing to tabletop legs – your legs in the air above your hips, and knees bent at a 90-degree angle.”

A glute bridge

This is another spinal exercise like the roll down, but done from a supine position. It strengthens the whole posterior chain as well as the glutes and hamstrings, and can be progressed to single leg, staying up for longer, or you can use a ball or Pilates ring to add some extra work.”

“Using these four exercises as the basis for a full workout, I’d start with the roll down, maybe progressing it into a 3/4 or full plank, with the addition of some push-ups (your knees can be down).

Then come onto your front, and add an exercise like swimming, raising an arm and opposite leg then switching, repeating three to five times each side as a beginner, ensuring your hips stay stable and you can maintain a posterior tilted pelvis while keeping the head in line with the spine.

Next, roll onto your back, and move onto toe taps (10 each leg) before progressing to 100. Finish with a glute bridge, coming up five times, then raise and lower each leg three times each side, in time with an exhale, keeping hips stable.

You can then add a supine spinal twist, hugging your knees before coming up to seated, and doing some seated cat/cows, plus side bending to either side to ensure all spinal movements have been hit.”

Arthritis affects over 10 million people in the UK, and while you might think it only affects joints you’re mistaken: it impacts lives, pushing millions to seek relief. And, while there’s no cure, many find that lifestyle choices and natural remedies can make their symptoms more manageable.

Know someone suffering? We spoke to qualified pharmacist and co-founder of NutraTea, Anish Patel, on natural ways to help ease the pain.

Stay active

The NHS recommends gentle activities like swimming, yoga and walking to keep joints flexible and muscles strong without adding strain. Even short, regular sessions can reduce stiffness and improve mobility.

Eat anti-inflammatory

Studies suggest that diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids from oily fish, leafy greens, nuts and berries can help manage inflammation. Reducing processed foods and sugars may also ease flare-ups.

Watch your weight

Excess weight increases stress on weight-bearing joints. According to the Arthritis Foundation, even modest weight loss decreases pain and improves mobility in people with osteoarthritis.

Manage stress

Research shows that mindfulness practices, such as meditation and breathing exercises, can improve pain perception in arthritis patients. Prioritising quality sleep is equally important for recovery and overall health.

Turn to tea

NutraTea’s herbal teas provide a natural way to aid lifestyle changes, plus are designed to support joint and bone health. Research shows that turmeric and green tea may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress — two key drivers of arthritis pain. Each cup also improves circulation and warmth, and offers gentle relief that’s easy to integrate into everyday routines.

Whether slippers are good for your muscles and joints is a question that Christophe Champs of PODO Clinic and Workshop gets asked a lot. Many people love to mooch around the house in their comfy slippers, but what are they doing to muscles and joints?

Christophe speaks to Checklist of the benefits of wearing supportive footwear, rather than slippers around the house, especially for long periods of time.

Comfort and stability

Ideally, anything you have on your feet for a long period should offer proper support and protection.

The more support your shoes can give you, the less unbalanced and unstable you will be, and therefore the less likely you are to slip, trip or fall. And this applies to any age group. So, choose a pair of comfy shoes for indoor wearing that offer support and then use them as you would a comfy pair of slippers.

Think of slippers a bit like chocolate. Yes really. Lovely but not good for you if you have it every day. The same applies to wearing slippers – an occasional treat only.

Heel support

With every step you take in slip-on shoes, your toes are forced to grasp the slipper to lift it off the ground and carry it until your next step. This is because your heel is not being grabbed by the footwear. This has an effect on the muscles and joints of the foot.

When the heel is secured within the shoe it helps to lift the entire shoe and carry it forward even as you bend your foot. This in turn supports the foot, and the rest of the body while walking.

Instability all the way up

Your ankles are the most challenged and challenging joints of your body because they connect two small horizontal feet with a tall and vertical body. Any time one of your ankles is unstable, every joint above is impacted. Slippers lack in ankle support.

Overlooking your ankle stability is like neglecting the first impression you’ll make when entering a room. Both will leave you with no second chance and things could go wrong. An unstable ankle can drag knees and hips down, in or outwards depending on your body type.

Orthotics and slippers

Orthotics and shoes work together. The firmness of the shoe sole and the action of the laces or Velcro are both part of the foot support that provides you with a better alignment, balance, and overall posture.

A pair of slippers with no heel or ankle support does not strap your foot, and so the orthotics are not wrapped around your heels and arches. Therefore, if you tried to wear your orthotics in your slippers, you would miss out on this snug and pleasant feeling that reinforces the action of the orthotics and optimises their results. And of course, if the slipper has no back – the orthotics will simply fall out.

Photo by MART PRODUCTION from Pexels

Working from home

When travelling to the office and working with other people, most people wear shoes, not slippers, and this helps to support and cushion the feet. But take this away and swap it for spending the entire day barefoot or with slippers on a hard floor and it begins to have an effect on feet and posture.

Another change is the reduction in walking when working from home. When people walk, they swing their arms, and this helps to take some of the load off the feet. Walking puts around 80% of the load on your feet, whereas stepping in an enclosed space with no arm swing applies 120% of your body weight on your feet.

Slipper alternatives

Start by wearing supportive and lace-up shoes in the house. These should support, protect and cushion the foot. They should stay on the foot as you walk. Remember, shoes are like glasses, they help only if you wear them and only if they fit you well. Save walking barefoot for sandy beaches or your fresh-mowed lawn, and slippers for putting your feet up in front of the TV.

Slip-on shoes are not great if you spend most of your day standing or walking. Indoor slip-on shoes, like slippers, are soft and unsupportive and should be worn sparingly. If you want to wear slip-ons then it is possible to get a custom orthotic sealed to the shoe which will help, but still isn’t ideal as you won’t get the full lateral support you need.

Some shoe brands do offer more support than others, for example Birkenstock Milano or Kalahari, Fitflop and TOMS, so sandal versions of these are an option. Alternatively, look for shoes with outer soles that are firm, can’t be twisted and only bend under the ball of your foot.

And finally, keep your slippers for serious relaxing only, and don’t use them for general wear.

To see your company in any upcoming features we are arranging please email editorial@hurstmediacompany.co.uk

Maintaining an active lifestyle and a sense of independence is incredibly important and a motivating factor for individuals with mobility issues. It can help lessen their dependence on others where they have the capacity to undertake daily activities more easily and safely and continue to live as independently as possible.

Those with mobility issues often need and look for assistance to enjoy an active and independent life. Walking aids, such as a rollator, can help to increase one’s freedom and range of movement. Walking frames have long been the traditional go-to walking aid, but individuals often exert a great deal of time and energy in moving the frame. A rollator is a mobility aid possessing several features to help support a mobility-assisted lifestyle and is recommended for users requiring minimal support.

Typically modern, innovative, and easy to use, a rollator has numerous unique selling points. Tailored to the user a rollator is available in several sizes, and comes with wheels, instead of legs, allowing them to move along in front of a person with minimal fuss. Additionally, they are height adjustable, function very well outdoors, and are easily transportable.

A Rollz rollator is designed to help you to enjoy an active and independent life, and step out in confidence, comfort, and style. Designed by Dutch kinetics engineers, their modern rollators are built from the highest-quality materials, to last for as long as one needs to use them.

Rollz engineers are dedicated to crafting innovative, modern rollators to create the ultimate walking experience. Designed with the user in mind, the walking aids are geared towards making everyday tasks as straightforward as possible. Easy to push and manoeuvre, their rollators help users to enjoy their walk, holiday, or shopping trip.

Their rollators are a reliable shopping partner thanks to their large capacity bag. Even with a bag full of shopping, the modern rollator is easy to steer thanks to its smart gravity point. With the wheels set close to each other, it enables a tight turning circle which comes in handy in narrow spaces. Rollz have also placed an emphasis on stability, with their rollators designed to make walking feel safer by reducing the fear of falling. In doing so, it can provide physical stability and a boost of confidence you need to go out and move more.

Dance workouts are great for many different reasons. As an exercise, dancing is great for coordination, it helps to improve posture, releases endorphins, improves overall muscle strength, and best of all it’s a great confidence booster. So, if you want to get moving, dance is a great way to do so.

Checklists have partnered with Ballet Fusion to bring you 10 dance tips to improve your mobility.

1. Find your rhythm

Dancing is all about moving your body to a beat or rhythm, whether that’s the swing of the hips or the tap of the foot. Practice at home while listening to your favourite songs if you need to build up confidence before taking a class. Feel the music move through your body and let go of all inhibitions.

2. Don’t overthink it

Dancing is meant to help lower blood pressure, not raise it, so don’t stress. It’s normal to feel pre-class nerves, but don’t let that stop you. With dance fitness, it’s not about being the best – just focus on moving your body and feeling good.

3. Take a friend with you

You don’t necessarily need a friend, but it always helps to have power in numbers. Make a date out of it and enlist the support of a friend – maybe they’ll end up loving it just as much as you do!

4. Take advantage of online classes

If you’re still battling nerves, many dance studios have online classes available. At Ballet Fusion, they’ve gone from 100% of their clients being in the UK to up to 40% of them now coming from overseas – proving that this trend for at-home conditioning classes is a global phenomenon.

5. Try different classes

If you’re figuring out how to start dancing, any class with a ‘beginner’ prefix is a great starting point. Try out different styles of dance and focus on how your body feels and how you connect to the music. The best part is – many studios offer free trials so you can try before you decide.

6. Wear comfortable clothes

No matter what kind of exercise you’re doing, being comfortable in your clothing is paramount. To participate in most dance fitness classes, all you need is a comfortable pair of athletic clothes and shoes. But studios can differ so it’s best to check studio-specific rules and regulations.

7. Give yourself time

It’s not unusual for new exercises to feel awkward. Rather than throw in the towel, position yourself to the side or back of the classroom and focus on having fun. After a few classes, you’ll start feeling more comfortable with the moves, enabling you to enjoy yourself and the benefits the workout provides.

8. Get a smartwatch

Many people head to exercise classes with their smartwatches now. This way, you can clock your step counts, calories burned and energy levels after class. This bite-sized way to see progress can be really motivating.

9. Set goals for yourself

Having goals, even as simple as making new friends, can help alleviate some hesitations you may have about starting dance fitness – because you’re going into class with a purpose. Start small with something like having fun, completing one full class or trying a new dance move and build up from there.

10. Treat dance as a sport

With dance, you’ll be using muscles that probably haven’t been activated for a while so it’s important you take the right steps before, during and after the class to condition your body and keep you feeling your best. Make sure you eat a light healthy meal before class to give you energy, drink lots of water during the class and warm up your body with some light exercises before class.

Mobility challenges can be a thing of the past, with a little help and support from some innovative products and services. There are ways, means and aids aplenty that mean you can enjoy life without compromising on comfort, safety or accessibility. Wherever you are and whatever you want to do, from enjoying your home and garden to getting out and about shopping or visiting family and friends, there are ways to ease everyday mobility battles that can hinder you – and they could be life-enhancing or even life-changing.

Here are some ideas to get you not only sitting comfortably but walking, driving or however else you want to get around.

1. TriLift

The UK has over 350,000 mobility scooter users who rely on their mobility device as part of their everyday life – and though their units are great for zipping round shopping malls and town centres, getting them there in the first place can be challenging and demand a degree of physical might and ability. Scooter and power chair transportation must be simple, affordable and easy to operate by one person – and TriLift UK has a remarkable and innovative product that neatly ticks all three boxes.

Fitted onto the back of a vehicle, the TriLift engages with a coupling bracket that is permanently fixed to the mobility scooter or power chair. By the flick of a switch, the mobility device is raised off the road and locked in place on the vehicle’s rear.

Launched in the UK early in 2018, the TriLift has proved extremely popular and the company now has consultants covering the whole UK.

Sometimes it’s easy to let your fitness lapse, whether through lack of time, opportunity or motivation. But there are so many different ways of getting and staying active, whether you’ve lost motivation, have never been a fitness fan or become bored with your usual fitness regime. If you’re stuck at home or want a gym-quality workout in the privacy of your own home; if you want to get on your bike and take to the open road or change your routine there are plenty of options. And there are numerous ways to stay fit from the inside out and keep your diet and nutrition on track too.

Here are some ideas to get and stay on the move

1. Fitness Superstore

It’s been easy to overindulge during the Covid lockdowns, but now, hopefully, they are set to become just a memory and it’s time to get fit with the award-winning Max Trainer from Bowflex. It’s your answer to maximum calorie burn in less time!

There are four models to choose from – the M3, M6, M8 and the Max Total – all featuring the innovative 14-minute MAX Interval™ Workout. Combining intense intervals of hard work with short recovery times, this world-renowned programme is proven to burn more calories than steady-state exercise, delivering the results you want in under a quarter of an hour.

At a fraction of the size of most ellipticals and treadmills, the Max Trainer is the epitome of form meeting function. Its small footprint means you can get a gym-quality workout anywhere in the home, with the average cross trainer requiring more than twice the space.

Nutracheck also shows you photos of food, making it so simple to spot exactly what you ate. Simply scan the barcode on a food to add it to your diary.

As well as calories, Nutracheck tracks fat, saturated fat, salt, sugar, carbs, protein and fibre. It’s easy to see how well your diet measures up to daily nutrition goals.
6. Neo G

Suffering from aches and pains in the knees and joints is a common issue for many people in the UK. It’s important not to neglect your muscles and joints as the smallest of injuries can sometimes lead to sprains, strains and instability, hindering the simplest of everyday tasks and movements.

By using a support such as the Neo G Stabilized Open Knee Support while walking or exercising, you can help to prevent injuries, as well as reduce the possibility of worsening existing ones.

People of all ages across the UK suffer from aches and pains, such as a stiff neck or arthritic hands – which often start in bones and joints. Neo G is tackling this growing problem with the new Daily Defence Joint Health Glucosamine Liquid Supplement, which helps to support and maintain healthy bones and joints from the inside out.

In an uncertain world it’s probably prudent to rely more on premise than promise. Naturya can’t guarantee their superfoods are endowed with curative health properties, but they can say with confidence that their products are nutritionally dense, minimally processed, rigorously tested and have an integrity that may both support and facilitate the possibilities of an improved general wellbeing.

With regard to some aspects of nutrition there is a broad consensus of agreement but, inevitably, given the idiosyncrasies of individual dietary choice, what we eat increasingly reflects our personally-constructed set of beliefs about what is good for us. And with so much conflicting information, the decisions about what is right to eat can be bewildering. Naturya’s belief is that it makes sense to give your body the best nutrients available. And premium quality superfoods as supplied by Naturya, a fully vegan company, offer a simple way to fulfil this need.

Proven to help reduce pain and injury

INTRODUCING, THE NEW ENERTOR Walking and Running Insoles with PX1 shock absorption technology. Enertor, manufactured in Britain, has been helping people stay pain and injury free for over 20 years. Their new PX1 technology is double the shock absorption per millimetre than standard insoles which means more protection from pain and injury*.

Most people don’t think about the impact that ground forces from running or walking have on your body and the injuries that they can cause.

The unique PX1 technology spreads ground forces out across the insole, like a crash helmet for your feet. They also provide support to try to keep your foot in its natural position while walking, this is also important to help reduce the risk of pain and injuries.

They are tested and used by the British Army and are endorsed by England Athletics and they are even worn and endorsed by the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt.

They are a class 1 medical device designed to help painful feet, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, knee pain, shin splints, bunions, metatarsalgia, arthritis and lower back pain. The insoles are light and extremely comfortable and fit into almost any shoe.

Get reliable relief from cold sores this winter

IF YOU SUFFER FROM REGULAR cold sore outbreaks in the colder months, then look no further than lipivir®. The revolutionary lip gel is proven to prevent cold sores from appearing; reduce regular outbreaks; and ensure normal, good-looking lips.

Don’t wait for cold sores to appear – get protected with lipivir® by applying it up to twice a day (once in the morning and once in the evening) to keep you covered at all times. lipivir® is neat and small, easily fitting into any bag or pocket, so it’s handy and ready to use whenever you need it. The transparent gel makes application discreet and you can still use lipstick, lip gloss and make-up when applied shortly after lipivir®.

Over 85% of the UK population carry the cold sore virus. Here are some useful tips for keeping them at bay, this winter:

De-Stress – Going for a walk or even just turning your phone off for a few hours or making a nice hot, calming drink are some of the many ways to relieve some tension quickly

Superfoods – Introduce nuts, seeds and fruits into your diet as they have nutrients which can boost your immune system, which builds resistance to the cold sore virus

Lip-care – Keep your lip care routine on top form. Apply lipivir® twice a day but also invest in a good lip balm to keep your lips hydrated.

Suitable for vegans and vegetarians, lipivir® is cruelty-free, skin-friendly and contains no preservatives or cortisone.

An advanced device for glaucoma therapy

ISTENT INJECT® W is one of the smallest medical implants known to be put in the human body. Today, the original iStent® and iStent inject have been implanted in more than 600,000 eyes around the world.

iStent inject

iStent inject W devices are microscopic 0.36mm stents, which are implanted into the eye. When in place, they aren’t visible to the human eye. The stents are designed to restore the eye’s natural fluid outflow, thus reducing ocular pressure [1].

The surgery can be carried out at the same time as cataract surgery, or during a separate procedure, usually under local anaesthetic by an ophthalmologist. iStent inject has an excellent safety profile and is performed by ophthalmologists while you’re awake. An international study has shown 72% of patients who were treated with iStent inject no longer need to take glaucoma medication after 12 months [2].

Glaucoma

Once diagnosed, the most common treatment is prescription eye drops, which will help to either reduce the fluid production or increase the drainage of fluid from the eye. These eyedrops need to be applied up to three times a day, every day for the rest of your life, so compliance can become an issue, thus reducing the efficacy of the treatment. Trabecular micro-bypass surgery can be an alternative treatment.
