Plus, with the highest density of record shops in the world and thousands of local gigs per year, the birthplace of Fatboy Slim, Royal Blood, and Rizzle Kicks is a haven for fans of all genres.

Food: London

London remains the top location for foodies, with the largest variety of cuisines and the highest density of Michelin-starred restaurants in the country. For those looking for casual dining, the capital boasts over 100 food markets and a host of food and drink events, including foodie favourites Taste of London, and Pub in the Park.

Wine: Kent

Home to over 50 vineyards, Kent is a wine-lover’s dream. Alongside a host of acclaimed producers, the local wine scene is supported by over 25 wine bars, with venues popping up regularly. And, with plenty of local varieties to taste, it’s no surprise the county hosts a packed calendar of tasters and festivals, with over 50 dedicated wine events a year, including the Wine Garden of England Summer Celebration.

Sport: Manchester

Manchester is the ideal place for sports enthusiasts to live. With almost 60 community sports facilities, including 11 public pools and 28 health and fitness centres, the city has some of the best sporting infrastructure in the country. For those who prefer to spectate, Manchester has no shortage of professional sports teams, including Premier League football giants Manchester United and Manchester City.

The arts: Edinburgh

The world’s first UNESCO City of Literature, Edinburgh boasts a vibrant arts scene for lovers of theatre, music, comedy, literature, and art. In addition to the iconic Edinburgh Fringe festival, the city rivals other major UK centres for live performance with 26 dedicated theatre venues. The visual arts are well supported too, as the hometown of the National Museums Scotland and over 50 galleries.

There’s no shortage of beach destinations across mainland Europe, and recently, flights are inexpensive enough to allow many UK residents to get to them easily. Whether you’re considering Greece, Monaco, or even a seemingly under-the-radar destination like Montenegro, beach destinations are just a few hours away.

But perhaps, it’s time Brits discovered their own backyard. Why not take a trip to one of the UK’s beach destinations?

Caernarfon and Beaumaris, Wales

Caernarfon and Beaumaris are two small towns on the north-west coast of Wales, separated by the Menai Strait and about a 20-minute drive. Each brings its own charm; Caernarfon was occupied by the Romans until 383 AD, while Beaumaris was originally a Viking settlement and has since been revered for its beautiful castle.

Beaches

Sandy beaches aren’t common in the area, but there are still many beautiful seaside spots.

Near Caernarfon, there are a pair of pebbled and sandy beaches, which are probably the most beautiful ones in the area. Penmaenmawr Beach is 25 minutes away, and so is Llanfairfechan Beach. They both feature some lovely mountain backdrops and areas nearby for snacks and drinks.

Just 15 minutes away, is Dinas Dinlle Beach. It has lovely views towards the island of Anglesey and is big enough to still give you a private corner of your own, no matter how nice the weather is.

Closer still to Caernarfon is Felinheli Waterfront, which can’t quite be classed as a beach, but it could be a good spot if you’re not intent on swimming, and are happy hanging by the water.

There are a few more options on the Beaumaris side of the Menai Strait. Beaumaris Beach is right in town, composed of mostly sand and shingle, and has some of the best views towards Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park.

Within five minutes of town is Lleiniog Beach, another beach with stunning views towards the national park. While not sandy, it offers lovely walks and good seating areas for picnics.

Further along the coast of Anglesey, Traeth Penmon is around the corner from Penmon Point, and has some views out to Puffin Island. If you want to spot any birds, you should probably bring your binoculars.

Photo by Courtney Corlew on Unsplash.

One of the more beautiful beaches in the area is Traeth Gwyn, also known as White Beach, due to its colour. The crescent-shaped cove is mostly pebbles, but it is quite secluded so you could end up with your own private view.

Further west, you can find an even more secluded spot for the adventurous ones in your crew. Tan Dinas Beach is close to the formerly operational Tan Dinas Quarry.

If you’re craving some sand, Llanddona Beach is probably your best option. It has free parking and is big enough that even when the carpark seems crowded, you’re sure to find a little slice of paradise.

Sights and activities

Castles are always on tap in the older UK towns, and both Caernarfon and Beaumaris have lovely castles.

Caernarfon Castle has plenty to explore. The castle blends heritage and modernism well, with exhibits and one of the best views of town from the top of the turrets.

Photo by Lee Beel on VisitBritain.

There is also an old Roman fort in Caernarfon, called Segontium. Back in the day, it was one of the most important military bases in Wales. While it might not look like much today, the history it possesses is quite interesting.

Caernarfon is one of the best towns to use as a base to explore Eryri National Park. The park has numerous mountains to climb and lakes to explore, including the tallest mountain in Wales, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), and Llyn Tegid, the largest natural lake in Wales. The edge of the national park is just 10 minutes from town, so it’s definitely worth the trip.

There are a number of slate and copper mines in the area as well, which are interesting options for more adventurous families. Most of them include some kind of cave excursion, so prepare yourself for the dark and wet.

Near Beaumaris sits the iconic Beaumaris castle, complete with a moat and drawbridge. With plenty of nooks and crannies to explore, and tall towers to climb, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Beaumaris Gaol is another fascinating sight for those with an interest in history, and that don’t mind hearing some gruesome stories from the past. The guides there are very knowledgeable and bring a light-hearted attitude to the venue.

If you’re in the mood for a walk or hike, there’s a coastal path that follows the entire coast of the Isle of Anglesey. The stretch from Beaumaris to Penmon will take you to the lovely Penmon Point Lighthouse, and if you go the other direction, you could check out the incomparable Traeth Llanddwyn, although it could take you all day if you start from Beaumaris.

For kids

Near Caernarfon, there are a few awesome spots to keep your kids busy. Beacon Climbing Centre might not be specifically designed for kids, but they have fun climbs for kids over the age of five. If you’re new to climbing, they have a welcoming atmosphere and friendly instructors.

While it’s on the pricier side, Welsh Highland Railway offers a fun steam train ride for the whole family, and dogs are allowed on board too. You will see sights inaccessible by car if you choose the right route.

Photo by Ben Selway on VisitBritain.

Just outside the edge of the national park, you can take your kids for a pleasant horse ride at Snowdonia Riding Stables. They cater to beginners and the views of the park are wonderful. The horses are always in great shape and are clearly well taken care of.

In Beaumaris, take your little ones to Beaumaris Pier. The views from the pier are lovely, and it’s a good spot to teach your kids about crabbing. You can also get a boat to Puffin Island from the pier, which is a great way to get your kids interested in wildlife.

Drinks

South of Caernarfon sits Pant Du Vineyard and Cafe. From June to September, you can indulge in a guided tour and tasting. They also have a wide variety of red, white and rosé wine available in their shop, as well as cider, gin, juice and honey. All of these can also be ordered online at pantdu.co.uk if you run out at home.

In Beaumaris, The Spirit of Anglesey is the spot for gin making and tasting. Choose from over 50 flavours to add to your special customised gin, and try a few others along the way.

Eats

There’s no shortage of places to eat in these two coastal towns. In Caernarfon, you can treat yourself to fine dining at Sheeps and Leeks, Italian at Osteria, Greek classics at Ouzo & Olive and if you’re in the mood for Chinese, head to Fu’s.

Photo by Amie Johnson on Unsplash.

Across the Menai Strait, in Beaumaris, you can find a few local gems. Just outside of Beaumaris Castle is Happy Valley Pavilion Cafe, which has your tea and quick bites covered. There’s a lovely butcher called Mercado, while Sarisa Indian Kitchen is great for those craving a curry, and The Midland Tapas and Wine Bar is a sweet spot for sharing plates.

Stays

Caernarfon is well situated on the coast and central to many good spots to visit. In town, Black Boy Inn is a great spot and has a killer restaurant as well. Victoria House B&B is another stay with great reviews. If you feel like staying out of town, Plas Dinas Country House is a marvellous spot, and Coed Helen Holiday Park is a sweet holiday park with a swimming pool and a great little restaurant, Molly’s, around the corner.

In Beaumaris, which is slightly farther from some of the main attractions in this article, there are a few highly rated places to rest your head. Bishopsgate House Hotel is one of the top-rated hotels in the area, and The Bulkeley Hotel, The Bull’s Head Inn, and Castle Court are all good backup choices. Outside of town, you can venture to Wonderfully Wild for glamping lodges and more.

Tobermory, Isle of Mull

While the general area of Tobermory has been inhabited for over 3,000 years, Tobermory itself was established in 1788, created by the British Fisheries Society. Tobermory was built by cutting away slope and rock to make room for the town. Tourism was a key factor in keeping the town alive during lean years, and the deep water pier constructed in 1864 assured larger vessels could dock, which cemented it as a trade and tourism hub which now supports over 1,000 residents.

Photo by Jess Snoek on Unsplash.

Beaches

Sadly, there are no ‘real’ beaches directly in town. However, there is a small ‘beach’ right on the harbourfront called Tobermory Beach with nice views of the colourful buildings, and technically, you can swim. However, when you see the other beaches within a half hour drive, you will want to check them out.

Calgary Bay is the largest beach in the area, and it has pristine blue water. North from there, and a bit farther from Tobermory, is Langamull Beach. While it’s smaller, it still has big, beautiful rocks and clear blue water. There’s a smaller beach to the east of it as well. Port na Ba is another bright blue option, and it’s quite secluded. You might be the only people there, but don’t be surprised if you have some sheep for company.

Keep in mind, the water here is cold all year long, so save the swimming for the bravest in your squad, or for those who want to enjoy the wellbeing benefits of cold-water immersion.

Sights and activities

Tobermory is a quaint little town that packs many sights and activities. A 30-minute walk towards Tobermory Lighthouse offers a beautiful view of mainland Scotland. In the opposite direction, Aros Waterfall is a lovely cascading waterfall for the whole family to enjoy. If the Easter Island statues don’t fit in your itinerary, why not check out the Standing Stone Glengorm? These standing stones are just 15 minutes away and are interesting little structures.

If you have some energy left after the sightseeing, Tobermory Golf Club is an undulating and challenging course the offers views of the sea and windy, links golf. If a more gentle stroll is more interesting to you, walking by the colourful buildings on Main Street is great, and you can pop-in to The Picture Gallery while you’re there.

Photo by Matt Seymour on Unsplash.

For the most adventurous in your group, and the highly qualified, there are opportunities to scuba dive near Tobermory. There are a number of companies that can accommodate divers, however, most of them do not provide training, support or equipment, they are mainly just charter companies that can get you out to sea. The nearest is Lochaline Boat Charters, although there are a couple of companies listed on Google Maps with phone numbers, but no website.

For kids

If you’re hoping to entertain the little ones for a couple hours, check out Mull Aquarium. The aquarium is Europe’s first catch and release aquarium, so the animals are brought in from local fishermen, divers and farmers. This guarantees that no two visits are the same.

On a warm summer day, there’s nothing better than an ice cream cone. Isle of Mull Ice Cream has a diverse and crowd-pleasing range of flavours to suit every taste. Their flavours change every few days, so you’re sure to discover a new taste if you visit more than once.

Drinks

There are a couple places to get quality bevvies in and around Tobermory. Tobermory Distillery is an award-winning distillery with scotch whiskies and gins. They’ve been creating amazing spirits since 1798, so exploring and tasting at their distillery tour is worth your while.

Photo by john mcmillan on Unsplash.

If you’re not interested in whiskey or gin, head to Mishnish for your standard pub. On cold Scottish evenings they have the fireplace roaring and a pool table to keep you entertained.

Eats

Main Street in Tobermory is your best option to find good eats. If you’d like some fish and chips, Fisherman’s Pier and Hook’d are the best spots in town. For high-end, locally sourced dishes, The Galleon is the best Tobermory has to offer. Cafe Fish serves fresh fish and seafood and offers lovely views of the bay and Calve Island.

Isle of Mull Cheese is a bit outside of town, but it has some of the best cheese on the island. All of their milk and cheese comes from their singular herd of cows, and they have some other picky bits if you fancy a quick meal.

There’s also a mobile vendor, The Foodie Shack, which serves up pizza that’s cooked in a wood-burning oven. Online reviews confirm that their pizza is outstanding, so check out their socials to locate them on the day.

Stays

Tobermory has a number of charming little bed and breakfasts. The Tobermory Hotel is a four-star hotel that sits right on the water and a few doors down is the Harbour Guest House, another four-star stay with great reviews. If you’d rather stay a bit off the water, the Park Lodge Hotel and the Western Isles Hotel are both reasonably priced and still very close to Main Street.

Tobermory Campsite is a good choice for those interested in staying off the beaten path. If you want to get real fancy with it, Glengorm Castle could be the start of your next fairytale, and it’s just 15 minutes from Tobermory.

Morecambe, Lancashire

Morecambe is located by Morecambe Bay, part of the Irish Sea, and on the west coast of England. With stunning views of Lake District National Park and a boatload of activities, it’s definitely worth the trip.

Beaches

With many beaches within half an hour, Morecambe is a great choice for beachgoers. In town, Morecambe Beach has beautiful views, and is best enjoyed when the tide is in. Blackstone Point is also within driving distance.

Sights and activities

Any trip to Morecambe needs to start with a walk or bike along the promenade or bay cycleway. They stretch from Heysham (which has ferries to Isle of Man) to Morecambe, with plenty of stops and views along the way. Near the middle of the journey, take a stop at the Stone Jetty and the Eric Morecambe Statue. The sunset views from the Stone Jetty are also breath-taking. If shopping is on your list, stroll through the various independent shops in town to get your fix.

Photo by BenMoses M on Unsplash.

If that doesn’t tire them out, make your way to The Platform for a number of different live events. The Platform is an entertainment venue located in a restored Edwardian railway station.
Stays

If you’re looking for somewhere in town to rest up, The Midland, the Broadwater Guest House, and the Berkeley Guest House are all good options. There are also plenty of Airbnbs in the area and Sunnyside Camping & Caravan Site is just on the outskirts of town.

Portrush, Northern Ireland

Portrush is a naturally beautiful town built on the one-mile-long Ramore Head peninsula on the north coast of Northern Ireland. Its main attractions are the cliff-lined beaches and spectacular links-style golf courses.

Beaches

Portrush definitely has some of the best beaches in the UK. West Strand Beach is right in town and hugs the peninsula. It features beautiful views of Inishowen and reliable surfing. On the other side of the peninsula sits East Strand Beach, with views of the Skerries Islands, and of course, more surfing.

If you want to venture out of town, head east towards Salmon Rock Beach, Runkerry Beach, and Bushfoot Beach, all within 15 minutes of Portrush. You can also head west from town to Portstewart Strand, just 10 minutes away. If you’re willing to drive up to 30 minutes, there are a couple more stunning beaches on the other side of River Bann, Castlerock Beach and Benone Beach, which might be the nicest beaches in the area.

Sights and activities

There are some great natural and manmade sights in and around the Portrush area. On the way to Salmon Rock Beach, there is Dunluce Castle. While the castle is mostly ruins, it’s still worth the visit, even if just for the coastal views.

Past Salmon Rock Beach, the Giant’s Causeway is a group of stunning cliffside formations. From the ‘Organ Pipes’ to the hexagonal basalt columns, it’s almost unfathomable that this area wasn’t man made.

About 30 minutes from Portrush, you’ll find the Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge. If you’re afraid of heights or bridges, make sure to bring a spare set of underwear!

Photo by James Relf Dyer on VisitBritain.

For those of you that are Game of Thrones fans, and perhaps those who aren’t as well, a trip to the Dark Hedges would be an interesting change of scenery. This moody stretch of road was an iconic film spot for the series, and features spindly, finger-like branches that imprison the road.

If you’re into golf, or just want to give it a try, you’re in luck in Portrush. There are several world-class courses in the area, including 2019 British Open course Royal Portrush, which is situated on the edge of town and overlooks the ocean. Other options include Ballyreagh Golf Course, Portstewart Golf Club, Castlerock Golf Club and Bushfoot Golf Club.

For kids

If you don’t want to bring your kids to the course, there’s a little mini golf spot in town called Mini Golf Portrush. While it’s only nine holes, it’s reasonably priced and will keep the kids busy for a bit.

Around the corner from there is Curry’s Fun Park. With a water ride, a Ferris wheel, and much more, this is a great option for the little ones. Sportsland Amusement Arcade is another good option in town, and Portrush Coastal Zone is a small educational experience for kids as well.

Drinks

After all of those activities, you’ll need a drink. Head to Bushmill’s Distillery for some great tours, and great whiskey. Their guides are equally knowledgeable and funny. Definitely pick up some whiskey from the gift shop on the way out.

Photo by Dylan de Jonge on Unsplash.

Kiwi’s Brew Bar is an easy choice for the beer lover in your life. They have an immense selection of craft brews. The Harbour Bar is another popular venue, as is The Harbour Gin Bar. If you’re itching for some live music, head to The Station Bar, where you can dance the night away.

Eats

There are plenty of great restaurants in Portrush. Shanty is right on the tip of the peninsula. Kellys Kitchen is away from the peninsula and serves some of the best pizza in Portrush; and another good pizza joint is Igloo Pizza Co. Urban Restaurant is in town and serves down-to-earth meals. The Tides Restaurant is tucked just outside of town and has comfort food and ocean views. Indigo Cafe has great breakfast, with huge portions and a lot of vegan options as well.

Stays

There are a number of great places to lay down in Portrush, including an innumerable amount of quaint bed and breakfasts. Portrush also has a bunch of hotels, including the Inn on the Coast, the Royal Court Hotel, and Adelphi Portrush. A few holiday parks are also dotted around the town.

With so many options for UK residents to get to beautiful beaches across Europe, Brits might not know about all the possible choices. Whether you’re considering Portugal, Croatia, or even a seemingly under-the-radar destination like Morocco, beach destinations are just a few hours away.

Perhaps, it’s time Brits discovered their own backyard. This summer, take a trip to one of the UK’s beach destinations, and find out why it’s worth staying closer to home.

Deal, Kent

Deal is an old town, possibly settled around the first Roman invasion in 55 BC. It was simply a small fishing village for a long time, yet became an important port by the end of the 13th century. It was a ‘limb port’ of the Cinque Ports, and eventually became the popular seaside resort town it is today.

Beaches

One of the best things about Deal is the size of its beach. Deal Castle Beach is the name of the section near town, but the entire complex stretches all the way from Cliffsend to Kingsdown, so you can walk in either direction to find yourself a nice spot and feel like you’re the only one there. The only ‘problem’ is that the beach is covered in pebbles rather than sand, so it’s not the best place to play, especially for little ones. However, it’s really not a big deal, and with a nice blanket, it’s quite a pleasant place to hang out.

Sights and activities

Some of the best things to see in and around Deal are the castles. Deal Castle is right in town, and has iconic circular bastions topped with cannons. It’s worth taking a tour and doing the rounds, there are many tunnels to explore and lots of history to learn, complete with beautiful views out to sea.

There are two other castles in the general area. Walmer Castle and Gardens is exquisite and certainly worth a visit. Many believe the gardens are more fun than the castle itself!

If you make your way south towards Dover, there are two must-see spots. Dover Castle sits pristinely on a hill overlooking town and the sea. Just east of town are the famous White Cliffs of Dover, and they can be spotted in certain parts of town as well.

There’s also some great links golf in the Deal area, including The Royal St George’s Golf Club – home to 15 instalments of The Open Championship. A bit closer to town, you can find Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club, a beautiful course in its own right. South of town is Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club, another links course.

If you’re in Deal on a weekend, Deal Saturday Market is open from 9am to 2pm and has everything from cakes and cheese to flowers and art.

Another nice hidden gem is Smugglers Records. It’s an independent record label and record shop, and it’s worth a stop.

For kids

While there are many options for adults to enjoy Deal, there are really only two solid options for kids in Deal.

Boonies is an outdoor activity area that pushes everyone, from kids to adults, to challenge themselves in the muddy assault course. Mini Boonies is designed for children aged three to nine, so kids can have a splash in the mud too.

If you’d like a bit of cleaner fun, head over to Pier View Amusements. The traditional arcade has modern machines and most games are under 50p, with some as low as 2p.

Drinks

As is with most UK seaside towns, there are plenty of choices for places to get your liquor on. For wine and cocktail lovers, Le Pinadier is the premier wine bar in town and Bloody Mary’s has a great selection. For beer people, Taphouse Beer Café has a sizeable selection. The Kings Head has your authentic pub feels. Landmark Bar is a great hidden gem, with an open mic night for the braver souls in your squad.

Eats

Deal has some of the most highly rated restaurants amongst British seaside towns. There are numerous options for those looking for pub grub, including Deal Pier Kitchen, with some of the best views out of their massive windows.

For other international cuisines, there are a few good places to eat as well. Bangkok Pavillion serves up traditional Thai food and The Sicilian has you covered for Italian food, including a bakery and groceries. Star of India has all of the classic Indian you’re looking for and Aspendos has your traditional Turkish options.

Stays

There are a number of lovely stays right in town. Number One Bed and Breakfast is a highly rated, five-star bed and breakfast close to Deal Castle. Waterfront Hotel has amazing reviews and is right by Deal Pier.

Outside of town, there are two great camping spots for the more adventurous groups. Lillyroo’s has a stunning mix of bell tents to make you feel like you’re living in a movie. Kingsdown camping has your more traditional camping options, as well as kitchens and cabins.

Bamburgh, Northumberland

Bamburgh is a beautiful beach town with a tiny population of just over 400 people. It is located within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and has been an important English settlement for centuries.

Beaches

Bamburgh and the surrounding area have a plethora of beaches to choose from. While you won’t find as many cliffs as some of the other seaside towns in the UK, the area of Bamburgh has nice sand and the beaches aren’t too crowded, which is good for kids and adults alike.

Bamburgh Beach is the crown jewel of Bamburgh. Located near the iconic Bamburgh Castle, it has views out to sea and towards the castle, and due to the location and lack of crowds, you may sometimes feel as if you’ve gone back in time while enjoying a sunny break.

Photo by Chris Ceasar on VisitBritain.

Further north, you can find Ross Sands, a picturesque stretch of sand and dunes with views back towards Bamburgh Castle and across the estuary to Lindisfarne Castle. The beach is a bit of a walk from the carpark, but once you reach it, you will likely be one of the only people there. Look out for seals if you venture northwards.

Towards the south, there are a few choices for beaches. Beadnell Bay Beach is an easy-to-access beach with views of the bay and towards the neighbouring Dustanburgh Castle. A bit further, but still within a 20-minute drive is Link House Beach, a wide open, 3km-long beach with free parking after 6pm.

Sights and activities

The top thing to do in Bamburgh, is, of course, visit the iconic Bamburgh Castle. The views of the castle from the outside are stunning on their own. But a visit inside is sure to be a treat as well. From the aviation museum and artefacts to the battlements and tea room, there’s enough to keep you busy for a few hours.

If you want some more castle time, Lindisfarne Castle rests on Holy Island (which isn’t exactly an island) and is a stunning residence with an art exhibition. While there isn’t as much to do there compared to Bamburgh Castle, it’s still a beautiful area worth the walk or drive. Just make sure to check safe crossing times to confirm that you won’t get stuck when the tide comes in.

In addition to these two castles, there are a bunch of others in the general vicinity of Bamburgh, including Chillingham Castle, Dustanburgh Castle, Alnwick Castle and Ford Castle.

There’s one golf course around Bamburgh, called Bamburgh Castle Golf Club. The course is always in good condition, but there are a few blind shots, so it would be worthwhile to go with someone who has been there before.

If you feel like giving surfing a try, NE Surf is the best surf school in Bamburgh. They have amazing reviews and the breaks around Bamburgh are surprisingly consistent.

Photo by Georgie Sowman on VisitBritain.

If you fancy a walk in the evening, head south along the beach to Seahouses, where you’ll find the Schooner Inn. They have live music on Fridays and Saturdays and good value pints.

For kids

Bamburgh is truly a small town. As such, there aren’t many attractions for kids. However, there are a couple of options to keep the kids busy and excited.

Bamburgh Castle holds open-air cinema nights. They start after sunset, so depending on when you visit, it can start quite late. You can check the Bamburgh Castle website to see what’s coming up.

If you’re looking to get your kids excited about animals, a cruise to the Farne Islands is sure to pique their interest. On one of the many tour options, you can see puffins, seals, dolphins and much more.

Drinks

Again, due to the size of Bamburgh, the drinking options are limited. Two of your best options in town are The Lord Crewe and The Castle Inn. Both have a good selection of beers and cocktails.

If you’ve ventured to Seahouses, they have a few more options for watering holes, including Black Swan Inn and the aforementioned Schooner Inn.

Eats

In town, your best two options are to check out The Potted Lobster for the best in-house dining or Creel & Reel Seafood Trailer for a quick bite.

Again, nearby Seahouses has a larger selection of restaurants. For your classic fish and chips, Neptune Fish Restaurant. For Indian cuisine, there are two restaurants pretty much side by side, Indian Brasserie and Spice House. Insieme has your Italian needs covered, and Élan Pizzeria is the pizza spot.

Stays

The most obvious and elegant stays are at one of the various accommodations curated by Bamburgh Castle. From self-catering stays to beachfront cottages, they have you covered if you’re willing to shell out a bit of money.

Other options include The Victoria Hotel, Sunningdale Hotel and Hillcrest House Bed and Breakfast. If you fancy a camping trip, Bamburgh Under Canvas is just outside of town and offers the best camping experience in the area.

Southwold, Suffolk

Southwold is a great destination for the entire family. Located on the eastern English shores of Suffolk, this old fishing town has a bit of everything to keep you busy or help you relax.

Beaches

In terms of beaches, Southwold has a few very nice, sandy options. Just south of the pier is the main beach in town, and it is covered colourful in beach huts. These can be rented through beachhutsouthwold.co.uk, and each one contains two chairs, two bench seats, a table, hooks, and shelves. They’re also quite close to the main lifeguards’ station.

Photo by Gemma Hardiman on VisitBritain.

A bit outside of town is The Denes Beach, which can be quieter than the main beach in town. Parking is easy to find and the sand is beautifully fine. This beach has lovely dunes and some colourful beach huts as well.

Walberswick Beach is slightly further south, across River Blyth, and is situated close to the town of Walberswick. You can take a ferry to get to the town to experience great swimming spots, especially in low tide, and if you’re lucky, you might see a seal or two! Walberswick is known for crabbing, and you can buy crabbing equipment right near the beach. There are nearby paths if you fancy a stroll as well.

Sights and activities

If you’re looking for attractions and things to do, Southwold has a plethora of possibilities.

Some of the signature sights include exploring the pier, checking out the lighthouse or visiting the museums in town, Southwold Museum and the Southwold Sailors’ Reading Room. If you don’t mind a bit of a drive, you could head to one of the two castles in the area, Orford Castle and Framlingham Castle, which are within 40 minutes of Southwold.

For the more active members of your family, Southwold Golf Club offers a quick nine-hole excursion with 18 different tees. There is also a set of tennis courts nearby. One of the best water-based activities in Southwold is taking a surf lesson from Southwold Surf & Bike Hire. You can also canoe the River Alde with a rental nearby.

If you time your trip just right, you could also head to nearby Henham Park for Latitude Festival. There will be live music and live comedy, as well as great food and clay model making for the kids.

For kids

Speaking of kids, no guide to Southwold is complete without some great tips for parents.

Two attractions stand out, the Southwold Maize Maze and the Under the Pier Show. The Maize Maze is just outside of town, and features two mazes, three jumping pillows, ziplining, and go-karts. While you’re waiting for the kids to tire out, grab a bite at the Old Hall Café & Walks.

The Under the Pier Show is like being transported to a different dimension. With odd arcade-style games that are sure to grab your attention, it’s worth visiting.

Photo by Ollie Kilvert on VisitBritain.

Drinks

If you’re looking to wet your whistle, there are a number of great pubs to check out in Southwold or nearby Walberswick. For a more local twist, head over to Adnams Brewery and Distillery, where you can find locally brewed beers, distil your own custom gin, and take tours through the premises.

Just 20 minutes outside of town, you’ll find Valley Farm Vineyards, a small and passionate wine producer. Take a tour, have a picnic or just stroll through their vineyard and take a bottle home with you!

Eats

What’s a coastal trip without some good grub? There are a ton of restaurants in Southwold and the surrounding area.

Beginning at the end of the pier, visit The Boardwalk for great value seafood and a welcoming atmosphere. For a long list of gins and beautifully presented English seafood and pub fare, Coasters is a good option. Sole Bay Fish Company is one of the best places for fish and chips, and The Little Fish & Chip Shop is equally marvellous. For something a bit different, head to Black Dog Pizza Co for great pizza right off the beach.

Stays

There is a diverse range of stays in and around the Southwold area. In town, the Swan Southwold and the Crown are two great choices. The Fishermans Cottage is right near the beach for those who want to be right in the action.

For others who enjoy being out of town, Pigs in Blankets and Little Wren Glamping are great for an outdoor experience.

Whitby, Yorkshire

Whitby is an old whaling town on the western shores of England, facing northwards towards the North Sea. The town was famous for its sturdy vessels, known as Whitby Whalers. Now the town is better known for its beautiful beaches and castles.

Beaches

On the edge of town sits a long stretch of beach that begins with Whitby Beach. The beach features breathtaking views of Whitby Abbey, and the orange roofs nearby. The Captain Cook Memorial and the Whalebone Arch are just behind the beach as well.

Further along is Upgang Beach, and a bit further than that is Sandsend Beach, both with beautiful cliffs caressing the shore. If you fancy a trip further out of town, Kettleness Beach is a smaller cove with a nice waterfall behind it.

In the opposite direction is Saltwick Bay, which is normally quieter than the main beach in town, and Robin Hood’s Bay Beach is a 15-minute drive away, and is quite picturesque.

Sights and activities

Your first stop in Whitby should be to take the 199 steps up to Whitby Abbey. The stone ruins are worth the climb, and there’s also the Caedmon Memorial and the Church of St Mary (and a brewery to mention later).

If you’re done there but still craving castles, you can visit Sneaton Castle just outside of town. Mulgrave Castle is a bit further, and can be slightly tricky to find, but it’s worth the trip. If you head that way, be sure to stop at Falling Foss Tea Garden.

Make your way down one of the piers in town to find the twin lighthouses of Whitby. The east and west lighthouses are unique and make for a great view into town or towards the sea.

The Whitby Jet Heritage Centre is a great place to get your hands on some unique jewellery. Whitby Jet can only be found along a short stretch of coastline surrounding Whitby, and each piece they make is handcrafted.

There are also two interesting museums in town, Captain Cook Memorial Museum and Whitby Museum. Both have interesting artefacts and are easy to spend a few hours in. If you’re up for a scare, check out Dracula Experience, an interactive museum with live actors.

If you’re in town in October, get ready for a completely different experience in Whitby, when the Whitby Goth Weekend begins. It features over 100 indoor stalls and has grown to become one of the world’s premiere Goth events.

For kids

There are a few choices in and around Whitby for those with kids. Mini Monsterz is an amusement centre with slides, games, laser tag, a climbing wall, and a sensory room for kids with special needs.

Near the seafront, there is a pitch-n-putt golf course, a footgolf course, a skatepark, and an outdoor swimming pool all within a few metres of each other.

If your kids are on the adventurous side, take them out on the water with the Captain Cook Experience. The short boat ride takes you on a journey around Whitby’s waters, while you hear the story of Captain Cook. Dogs and ferrets ride free!

Drinks

Why not take a tour around Whitby Brewery? The 45-minute tour explains the brewing process, the ingredients, the tools, and the technology they use, as well as their history. At the end, you’ll get a short three-glass flight to sample their ales. Children are welcome to join as part of a family group with free entry.

It doesn’t end there, head over to Whitby Distillery for a tour of their facilities as well. Their one-hour tours include a Whitby Gin and tonic, a history lesson on the distillery, a botanical masterclass, three different tasters and a free Whitby Gin glass to take home with you.

There are also numerous pubs and bars in the area, with favourites including The Moon & Sixpence, Arch & Abbey, and The Endeavour.

Eats

There’s no shortage of food options in Whitby, and fish and chips are definitely on the menu. Magpie Café serves some of the best, while Trenchers and Hadley’s Fish & Chips are comparable. Al Taco serves up, you guessed it, tacos. The Garden Room Bar & Restaurant at Sneaton Castle has a great atmosphere and amazing cocktails and food. Koko Korean Food is great if you’re craving some Korean.

If you’re looking for smoked kippers, there probably isn’t a better place to get them than Fortune’s Kippers. It’s well hidden, but worth the walk.

Stays

If you have the opportunity, stay at Sneaton Castle. The magical grounds will lull you to sleep easily. If you’d rather stay in town, the Dolphin Hotel and The Old Boatman’s Shelter are both located in great spots, and La Rosa Hotel and The Dracula Rooms are quirky options for those looking for something different. There are also a bunch of bed and breakfasts, as well as a few camping areas outside of town.

Lately, it’s been pretty easy for the majority of UK residents to get to beautiful beaches across Europe. Whether in France, Spain, Italy, or even a seemingly under-the-radar destination, beach destinations are just a few hours away.

But perhaps, it’s time Brits explored their own backyard. This summer, take a trip to one of the UK’s most underrated beach destinations, and find out why paradise is not always a flight away. There are plenty of charming towns in the South West.

Newquay, Cornwall

Newquay is a small town that packs a big punch. While it might seem a bit far out of the way on a map, it has some great attractions. It’s Cornwall’s surf city, as well as its party capital, and it has a ton of family-friendly options. So, whether you’re coming for the waves, the clubs or the beaches, Newquay has you covered.

Beaches

Newquay has beaches in spades. Great Western Beach is right in town, below the rocky cliffs. Tolcarne Beach is right beside it, as is Towan Beach. Still in town is Newquay Beach, and around the corner is Porth Beach. All of these are great options for those who want to stay in town, and they’re all equally beautiful.

If you don’t mind heading a bit further out, Watergate Beach is the longest stretch of sand north of town. Mawgan Porth Beach is just past it, and a 15-minute drive away.

Towards the southwest, Fistral Beach hugs the coast just below Newquay Golf Club. On the other side of River Gannel, sits a beach with very calm waters – depending on the tides – called Crantock Beach. Just past there are the stunning Polly Joke and Holywell Bay, the latter has large boulders right on the sand. The furthest-to-the-south beaches that are worth the trip are Perran Sands Beach and Perranporth Beach, with the former offering probably the quietest beach atmosphere of the lot.

Sights and activities

You couldn’t talk about Newquay without mentioning the surfing. Fistral Beach Surf School is highly rated, and Fistral Beach gets very consistent waves. Escape Surf School is also a great option, as are Blue Wings Surf School and SSS Surf School. If you want to surf, every school in town can get you on a board and learning in no time.

If you’re not in it for the beaches and surfing, there’s still plenty to do in the area. As mentioned earlier, Newquay Golf Club sits at the edge of town, overlooking Fistral Beach. The links-style course can be a tough test in the wind, but has lovely, manicured grounds.

Newquay is good for a lads’ or girls’ night out. There are a number of distinct bars, pubs, and nightclubs, so if you’re looking to party, there’s definitely a spot in town that suits your style. Bertie’s Club has your classic nightclub vibes – dance floors, strobe lights, VIP booths and all that fun stuff. Other options include Whiskers, Belushi’s and The Dead Famous Late Night Liquor Lounge.

If you want to walk off a hangover, the South West Coast Path is a beautiful stretch of coastal hiking that takes you to all the hits. The 630 mile (1,014 km) trail surpasses the town’s limits, so you will need to turn back eventually. The coves, cliffs and beaches along this stretch of land are some of the most beautiful in England. If you’re looking for a shorter walk in town, why not stroll along Fore Street and the surrounding area. There, you’ll find trendy surf shops, eclectic cafés, and a host of other shops. Trerice Manor’s beautiful grounds are pretty close to town as well.

After all that walking, it’s time for some relaxation. The Headland Spa at Headland Cornwall has all your spa needs in one place. Whether you’re looking to use the pool, get mud treatments, a massage or a day-long package, they have a highly rated experience for you. Oceanflow Yoga is another relaxing option, and they hold yoga classes with an ocean view.

For kids

There are plenty of options for families in Newquay. Newquay Zoo and Blue Reef Aquarium are great for kids with an interest in animals. For more active kids, Newquay Trampoline and Play Park is right nearby, as is Jungle Jack’s soft play. There’s also Oasis Fun Pools for those that aren’t as interested in swimming in the ocean.

If you’re looking for somewhere to golf that is kid friendly, Holywell Bay Golf Club is nearby. They have a mini-golf course, a family-friendly pitch and putt course, and a par-three course at one convenient location. For something a bit different, check out Pirate’s Quest Adventure Golf.

Drinks

There are two lovely choices for those who enjoy a trip to a winery or cidery. Trevibban Mill Cornish Vineyard is around 20 minutes away and has tours and tastings. Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm is a bit closer, and there you can ride vintage tractors, tour their cydery, tour their distillery, and taste some fresh cyder.

For some of the most creative cocktails around, Tom Thumb is the place to go. With over 120 bottles of hand-chosen spirits and innumerable combinations, you’re sure to find something delicious to sip on.

Eats

It wouldn’t be right to visit Cornwall without a visit to a Cornish bakery. A few of the best bakeries are located in a singular area of town, so you can sample a few of them and pick your favourite. But of course, you must try a Cornish Pasty.

If you want a sit-down meal, there are tons of possibilities. Bush Pepper does everything well from breakfast to dinner, Little Italy is popular, The Mussel Shoal is the mussel spot, and Sea Spray Fistral has amazing cliffside views. For takeout, Newquay Food Cartel is nice and Sushea has the best sushi.

Stays

As mentioned earlier, Headland Cornwall is one of the most picturesque and comfortable stays in Newquay. Other great stays include Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa, The Harbour Hotel, Oceanside Hotel, The Quies Hotel, Lennick Lodge, and many more.

For camping, Treago Farm Caravan and Camping Site and Gwinear Camping are two areas amongst many.

Weymouth, Dorset

Weymouth is a popular seaside resort town with a beautiful harbour and great location, approximately halfway along the Jurassic Coast. Just a two-and-a-half-hour train and a four-hour bus from London, it’s accessible and has many yearly events that are worth visiting. Nevertheless, Weymouth is still not as highly rated as some of Europe’s big destinations.

Beaches

The main attraction in town is Weymouth Beach, a long stretch of water that reaches from Nothe Fort to River Jordan. One of the benefits of this area is that due to the shape of the land and the offshore island, the tides are half as strong here, which creates a more consistent beach size. The beach can sometimes be busy, but it is so long that you are sure to find your own little slice of paradise.

At the north-western end of the beach, there is Bowleaze Cove, with beautiful views of the Riviera Hotel and a short pier.

The real stunners can be found outside of town. Man O’War Beach has gorgeous blue waters and is surrounded by cliffs, including the striking Durdle Door, which is just around the corner. The beach is just 30 minutes from Weymouth, and certainly worth checking out. If you want to check out all of the spots along the way, the South West Coast Path leads you on a three-hour walk to Durdle Door and Man O’War Beach.

Photo by Pawel Libera on VisitBritain.

On the other side of town sits the long, pebbly Chesil Beach. The beach is a great fishing spot if you have your rod and is probably suited to confident swimmers only. Come during the evening for a lovely expansive sunset.

Sights and activities

This town is a fisher’s dream, with many opportunities to fish by the shore, or take a charter and learn from the professionals. With them, you’ll have the opportunity to follow dolphins, see massive cruise ships, and catch some fish, whether deep-sea fishing or something a little different.

Just outside of town, on the Isle of Portland, there are a few attractions to check out. At the very southern tip of the isle, the colourful Portland Bill Lighthouse is a sight to behold. On the way to the northern side of the isle, you can walk the South West Coast Path to see stunning cliffs, such as Jess’s Cliff, and Rufus Castle. When you reach the northern side, you can visit Portland Castle, complete with cannons and all.

Back towards town, stumble into Nothe Fort and Nothe Gardens for a leisurely experience. The three floors of history and exhibits are interesting, and the grounds throughout the gardens are filled with splendour.

Nearby, you can find The Official Test Centre for all sorts of board-sports and water-sports lessons. From windsurfing to stand-up paddleboarding, this is one of the best places to learn.

Outside of town, towards the northeast, the Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens area is a unique experience for those who haven’t experienced the sub-tropics before. Filled with gorgeous flowers, delicate sculptures, a rope bridge, and a café, it’s sure to calm the senses.

Weymouth Golf Club is a storied golf venue, with golf played there as early as 1876. With views of town and beautifully manicured greens, it’s a great spot for seasoned golfers.

For kids

If your kids are into fishing, or you want to show them the ropes, head over to Weymouth Camping and fish in Wally’s Lake and Meadow Lake. These lakes make it easy to catch your first fish, and up to 30lb carp.

Another great water-based activity for kids is Moonfleet Adventure Sailing. On it, you can escape to the past aboard the almost 100-year-old vessel. Your kids can also help raise the sails or take control of the ship themselves.

For a newer experience, head over to Weymouth Player Ready, where they have virtual-reality gaming rooms, escape rooms, and laser tag.

Just north of the main part of town, you’ll find a collection of activities and attractions for kids. The SEA LIFE Centre has an aquarium with seals, otters, sharks, and a host of fish. Weymouth Bay Miniature Railway is around the corner. Leisureranch is a small amusement park with go-karts, bumper boats, and giant slides. Weymouth Pirate Adventure Mini Golf is your standard mini golf experience, and finally, Sandworld is a stunning collection of sand sculptures, with themes including Disney and many other popular television shows and movies.

Drinks

For an intimate visit to a vineyard, check out Little Waddon Vineyard, just north of town. They have wine and cheeseboards, and aren’t too crowded.

The Doghouse Micro Pub source most of their ales from England’s southwest, so you’re sure to get a taste of the area at their pub.

For live music and a great atmosphere, House of Sounds is a popular option. The décor is all music-themed, and they have live shows often.

Eats

For the best eats in town, just north of Nothe Fort has plenty of options. Seafood is obviously a popular choice, and a few of the best are: Catch at The Old Fish Market, Sea Beats, Rockfish, and Crustacean. For seafood with a view, The Lobster Pot and Crab House Café are the spots.

The Crab House Cafe. Photo by Rod Edwards on VisitBritain.

If you’re interested in something other than seafood, The Dorset Burger Company, Mona’s Thai and Asian Cuisines, and Littlemoor Spice are great choices. For something quick, head over to Fresh Bites for delicious sandwiches.

Stays

With an uncountable number of stays in Weymouth, you will have no problem finding something to fit your needs.

Gloucester House is a good upscale option. Beach View has exactly that, a beach view. Moonfleet Manor is slightly outside of town and has beautiful pools, gardens, and rooms.

For camping, Higher Moor Farm Campsite has a good glamping atmosphere. For a more standard option, try Sea Barn Farm.

Mumbles, Wales

While Mumbles might not have the same diversity of activities of some of the other areas on this list, it has some of the most beautiful beaches in Wales, and it’s close to Swansea if you’re looking for some nightlife. The proximity to Swansea might make it a bit busier, but it’s still worth a visit, and you’re bound to find your own little piece of paradise in one of the many coves.

Beaches

Beaches and coves are aplenty near Mumbles. Start with Mumbles Beach, with amazing views towards Swansea Beach. For views of Mumbles Lighthouse and the rocky cliffs, head to Bracelet Bay. But, be aware that swimming isn’t as easy from this side of town.

Further east is Langland Bay, and the accompanying Rotherslade Bay and Lambs Well Beach. These are definitely popular spots that are still easy to reach.

On the other side of Newton, but still just a five-minute drive away, is Caswell Bay Beach. This cliffy bay has beautiful sand and plenty of space, or if you’re feeling adventurous, take the path to Brandy Cove for a more secluded spot.

Pwll Du Bay Beach is a lovely secluded public area, but takes some adventuring compared to some of the other beaches on this list. It’s accessible via car and public transport at nearby Bishopston or Southgate. You can also access the beach along the coast path or through Bishopston Valley. The distance between the car park and the beach is over 400m, though.

Photo by Andrew Pickett on VisitBritain.

Another beach with a 400m walk is Three Cliffs Bay. The picturesque beach is lined by three limestone cliffs. The beauty is surreal, but watch out for strong tides and currents at all times. From here, you can also trek to Tor Beach and Oxwich Bay Beach. This entire area is special.

Sights and activities

There are a few nice castles in the general area. Oystermouth Castle is the first and most obvious choice to visit, as it’s large and right in town. There is a one-hour parking limit, so get in and get out.

The ruins of Pennard Castle are close to Three Cliffs Bay, and are really beautiful. The view towards the bay is one of a kind. If you want to go even farther for a castle, Castell Oxwich is a good choice, but it’s temporarily closed at the time of publication.

There are three lovely golf courses in the general vicinity. Langland Bay Golf Club is right on the coast, Pennard Golf Club is a bit further but also has great views of the water, and Clyne Golf Club is a bit further inland, but still a good choice.

For kids

Mumbles doesn’t have the most options for families, probably because nearby Swansea has it all. Nevertheless, there are a couple places to check out.

Swansea Footgolf is halfway between Mumbles and Swansea for the football-loving families.

The Gamez Room at Mumbles Pier is a family friendly spot with a host of games and activities. Activities include table tennis, shuffleboard, karaoke, and much more. You can rent out the space for your family and enjoy food and beer as well.

Photo by Vanessa Ferreira on Unsplash.

Underhill Park has expansive space to explore and a play area for children.

Drinks

There are a few interesting places to grab some brews. MumbAles is an amazing little craft beer shop and bar. The Taproom by Gower Brewery is the spot to get a taste of your local Gower beers. For a good dog-friendly option, Mumbles Ale House is your traditional option.

Eats

There are a lot of food choices along the promenade, and a few out of the limelight. The Lighthouse Brasserie, Bar & Kitchen and Lounge has a lovely view of the sea. Verdi’s also has a great view for those looking for some Italian, and La Dolce Vita is good as well if you want some more Italian.

For something more refined, head to Mor for the fanciest dinner in town. Gower Seafood Hut should be your quick pit stop for seafood. Pobbles Pizza is a great choice for those who venture out to Three Cliffs Bay.

Stays

There aren’t as many boarding options in Mumbles as there are in some of the other nearby towns, especially when compared to Swansea. But what they have in town is quite nice.

Among the best options is Coast House Bed and Breakfast, Langland Road Bed and Breakfast, Tides Reach Guest House, and Langland Cove Guesthouse.

Salcombe, Devon

Located in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Salcombe is a town that looks like it’s out of a postcard. From the estuary, there are hints of Italy and Spain, as the town sits on a hill and the water is dotted with sailboats. Besides the natural beauty, there are also many things to do in the area.

Beaches

There are seven beaches that are within reach of the city’s limits. Two are located on the Salcombe side of the Kingsbridge Estuary, while five are located on the east side of the estuary.

The two nearest to town are Salcombe North Sands and South Sands Beach. Both are covered in lovely fine sand and the crystal-clear blue waters are usually calm due to their location on the banks of the estuary. They are about a 10-minute walk from each other, so you could reasonably visit both in a day.

To get to the other five beaches, you have to take the Salcombe Ferry, which runs continuously until 6:30pm every day. While it might look swimmable, it is not recommended to swim across the estuary, due to boat traffic.

On the other side you have many options, including East Portlemouth Beach, Small’s Cove, Mill Bay, Sunny Cove Beach, and Salcombe Outer Beach. Each beach has a different view and a different level of popularity. To get the iconic Salcombe harbour view, East Portlemouth Beach is your best option.

Photo by Charlie Firth on Unsplash.

Outside of town, there are two more beautiful beaches to discover. On the Salcombe side, Soar Mill Cove is a lovely sandy cove with large cliffs and boulders and an island view. Gara Rock Beach, on the East Portlemouth side, is a striking open beach area with unlimited views out to the ocean.

Sights and activities

Get your walking shoes on, because once you’re done basking in the sun, there are a few good spots to check out.

Salcombe Castle sits at the edge of the water near Salcombe North Sands. The ruins are slightly overgrown at this point, and there isn’t really access to walk them, but on a nice day, the ruins on the rocky outcrop are cool.

Another spot to check out in the south-western part of town is Overbeck’s Garden at Sharpitor. The hidden paradise of subtropical gardens is bursting with colour and filled with exotic plants. There’s also a Gastrobus where you can find snacks and drinks.

Back in town, Fore street is the best place to shop. One store that stands out is Quba & Co, with their iconic sailing jackets.

Once you’ve had your fill on land and are ready to head back to the water, there are plenty of choices for boat, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard rentals. Salcombe sailing does boat hires from Island Street, and there are many options for kayak and stand-up paddleboard hires and lessons.

For kids

Salcombe doesn’t have tons of activities for kids, but there are a few things around to keep the kids busy.

Why not hire a bike from Salcombe Bike Hire? Salcombe is a very bikeable town, even though it is hilly, and you could even make your way to one of the beaches by bike. Or ride over to Victoria Quay, the best spot for crabbing in town. It would be a great way to teach the kids about crabs and end up with a cherished memory.

Or bike over to Cranch’s Sweet Shop for an old-fashioned twist on the candy store. If it’s hot out, you could also stop at Salcombe Dairy on your way back for some ice cream.

Drinks

Locally made drinks are always worth a try. Salcombe Distilling Co have many ways to experience gin and rum. They do distillery tours, tasting experiences, a gin school, and a rum school. Their award-winning gin school allows you to learn the art of distillation and make your own custom gin. If you fancy rum, you can make your own rum instead!

Devon Rum Co offer similar experiences, with a tasting and tour experience, and a cocktail masterclass. At the end of your visit, be sure to grab a bottle to bring home with you.

Eats

If you’re in Salcombe, it’s already crab o’clock. Head to Crab Shed for some of the freshest crab in England. The Winking Prawn is on the other side of town, but has a nice, chill vibe and a sweet patio. For a quick sandwich, The Salcombe Deli has you covered. For dessert, The Salcombe Crêperie has all the decadent goodness you’re looking for.

There are also some amazing restaurants in nearby Kingsbridge, just a 15-minute drive away. The selection in this area is very diverse as well. If you’re there on a Sunday morning, Mangetout Delicatessen has nice brunch.

For lunch, there’s Ceylon Cinnamon Restaurant, serving up Sri Lankan cuisine. Dream Turkish Kitchen serves up lunch as well.

For dinner, Restaurant Twenty Seven has a beautiful interior and menu to boot. La Ranchera has all of your Mexican cravings covered. Wild Artichokes is a good option as well.

If you just need some fresh fish, head to Catch of The Day.

Stays

Salcombe is a great place for camping or glamping. There are tons of sites outside of town within a reasonable distance. One of them is Higher Rew Camping Park.

Photo by Kindel Media on Pexels.

For more traditional, indoor accommodations, there are plenty of hotels in town. Near the South Sands, your two best choices are Harbour Beach Club Hotel and Spa, and South Sands Hotel and Restaurant.

Right in town, you have The Marine Quay, Harbour Hotel, Victoria Inn, and The Fortescue Inn, all with nice views out to the water.

With so many beautiful beaches and charming towns in the South West, this summer is the perfect time to go on a weekend break for some sun and sand. Check back soon for more features about beaches in other parts of the UK and around the world.

From strawberries and cream flavoured tipples to corgi-shaped biscuits and artisan cheeses, the UK is home to no shortage of delicious, quintessentially British treats to impress at your next party.

1. Tyrrells

Established in 2002, Tyrrells of Tyrrells Court Farm, Herefordshire have been making delicious hand-cooked crisps for a jolly long time – and they’re rather good at it. Their eclectic cast of eccentric characters and sublime flavours convey their proud British roots. They love entertaining, have a taste for the good life, and are a convivial, gastronomic bunch.

Tyrrells believe their crisps are the cream of the crop. Exquisitely dressed (their spuds keep their jackets on), hand-cooked and spun for freshness – you’ll find little grease here, not to mention their signature curl and crunch. All topped off with seasoning made with only the very finest ingredients – resulting in crisps that are Tyrrellbly Tyrrellbly Tasty.

2. Popcorn Shed

This iconic British duo of smooth creamy caramel infused with sweet, dried strawberries is as luscious and luxurious as it is timeless. They’ve really knocked this flavour out of the court.

Popcorn Shed are delighted to have launched this flavour in time for the Queen’s Jubilee. Nothing says British summer quite like strawberries and cream.

This is the perfect summertime treat for picnics in the park or an afternoon watching the tennis – it’s also the perfect treat to serve with a spot of afternoon tea.

What’s more, with VE Day approaching along with The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, there couldn’t be a better time to stock up on this superb British treat.

Popcorn Shed hope you enjoy this little taste of summer – come rain or shine!

3. Blushing Cook

With the Queen’s jubilee fast approaching, Brits nationwide are looking forward to celebrating this momentous historical occasion in style. In fact, over 12 million Brits are expected to attend a street party in Her Majesty’s honour over the four-day bank holiday weekend.

But if you don’t know where to start with your party planning, fear not as help is at hand. From fashion to food, or drinks to dancing, popular culture specialist Nick Ede knows a thing or two about how to pull off the perfect party.

The entertainment and royalty PR expert speaks to Checklist to give you the top tips on how to have a picture-perfect Platinum Jubilee Party fit for a Queen.

1. Pick a date to celebrate

It would be a tremendous faux-pas to celebrate 70 years of the Queen’s reign on the wrong date.

The Platinum Jubilee celebrations will be from Thursday, 2 June to Sunday, 5 June so there are a few options to pick a day to host your party.

2. Know your history

If you’re organising your street’s Platinum Jubilee party then the street’s kids will most likely expect you to be clued-up about royal matters. So you should know your basics, including that:

The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952

Her coronation took place on 2 June 1953; making Saturday, 2 June a very good day to hold your street party on.

Photo by Lina Kivaka from Pexels

3. Learn from history

If there are people on your street old enough to remember the Queen’s 1953 coronation, 1977 Jubilee and 2012 Diamond celebration then pick their brains about how these events were celebrated. Find out what food was laid on at street parties, what games were played and what music, if any, provided the soundtrack.

This is all useful inside information which could inform your street party plans. Bringing together the old and new is a fabulous way to fuse families and make your part that extra bit special.

4. Don’t delay in applying for permission

The government website has some very useful information about organising a royal street party. A street party is classified as being one which “takes place in one or two streets and is for neighbours only”.

You will need to inform your local council’s events or communities’ team four to 12 weeks ahead of your party. Expect to receive a small application form through the post.

If you find that it’s too late to get permission then why not consider holding a ‘street meet’ instead. These have less restrictions placed on them as they are just gatherings which take place in parks, driveways or cul-de-sacs.

5. The practicalities

Think up a checklist like the one below.

Appoint people to organise different parts of the party

Send out invitations early and don’t leave anyone on your street out – a party poster displayed prominently on a few windows should ensure this doesn’t happen

Make sure there is enough seating for everyone

You’ll need the most solid tables to put the food on and other tables to decorate and dot around the party

You will also need plenty of chairs, blankets and cushions, particularly if the party goes on into the evening

Arrange a kids’ area away from the food, so as to not end up with a football in your Coronation chicken

Organise a gazebo or two or extra parasols to help with the weather – be it a bit damp or very hot.

Photo by King’s Church International on Unsplash

7. Decorations

Suitable decorations should give a royal theme to your street party. Craft companies have a great selection of Jubilee party supplies to make sure your street party is a successful one. Bunting, balloons and flags with the red, white and blue of the Union Jack will ensure that you and the kids can party like it’s 1953.

8. Food

Think British when choosing what snacks and treats to prepare for your party. Red, white and blue icing can give your street party cakes a patriotic atmosphere while coronation chicken and Victoria sponge cake are both foods with a royal theme. British classics such as Beef Wellington, pork pies, trifle and Bakewell tarts are sure-fire crowd-pleasers.

Now more than ever its time to celebrity the diversity that makes Britain great so speak to your friends and neighbours and get them to bring some fabulous food too that brings out their cultural heritage for all to celebrate.

9. What to wear

From fancy dress and Union Jacks to glam dresses and tailored suits – people up and down the country will be dressing up for this big occasion. From re-wearing old frocks to styling up existing wardrobe pieces its all about the street party catwalk.

Everyone needs to look and feel fabulous and it’s the perfect time to get out your finest and restyle it to look festive and feel great.

Image by Rudy and Peter Skitterians from Pixabay

9. Activities

Keep the children active at Jubilee street parties by organising lots of activities. Setting up a face-painting stall on the street corner is a fabulous way of getting the party started – having a red, white and blue face is sure to be all the rage in early June.

You could also set up a table sale or a raffle stall to create some extra excitement or raise some money for good causes.

10. After the party

When you’re sending out the invitations, let your neighbours know the expected start and end times. Not all the neighbours will want to come to your party but they will want to know when the noise will begin and end.

Have lots of bin bags to hand when the party is in full swing so that you can clear away mess as you go along and don’t forget to have a team of little helpers to assist you with the clean-up operation after the party has ended.

And don’t forget to have fun; this Jubilee will go down in history and you are all a part of it.
