The lifting of lockdown limitations provides many of us with long-awaited chances, such as seeing friends, doing sports, resuming touch with family in ‘real space,’ or returning to employment that we like. 

Even the positive, much-anticipated transitions and readjustment may be tough for our mental health for many of us.

The latest Covid-19 news states more than 50,000 Covid cases have been recorded in the UK for the first time since 17 July. What does this mean for education, should schools offer more remote learning options?

As the Covid cases increase, schools have been forced to enforce mask-wearing, send whole year groups home to study online, and in some instances shut early for half-term.  Although the government’s claims of a return to normality in the classrooms, schools in high coronavirus regions say they’ve struggled to operate, with many teachers out ill and difficulty finding substitute teachers due to high demand.

Remote learning has posed several difficulties for both students and teachers ranging from the digital divide and lack of technological access to mental health issues and resources. The pandemic’s detrimental effects have been particularly severe for low-income families and pupils of colour. 

According to the office for national statistics (ONS) during the coronavirus pandemic, remote learning was only a partial replacement for in-class teaching, as students covered much less content while working from home than their counterparts in the classroom, according to teacher evaluations. 

Primary school students studying remotely covered a significantly lower proportion of the learning materials than their in-class classmates; secondary school students learning remotely covered a substantially bigger fraction of the learning materials than their in-class peers.

Learning at their own pace

Students that learn faster than others benefit from remote learning since they are not held back by peers who study at a slower pace. They can concentrate on the assignment and accomplish it so they can go on to other tasks since they have work set for them.

The kickstart scheme is a part of apprenticeships, T Levels, and traineeships which are all part of the government’s ‘Plan for Jobs’ skills and employment programmes. 

The Kickstart Scheme was introduced as part of the Chancellor’s Jobs Plan in July 2020. The scheme seeks to generate thousands of six-month work internships for young people. 

The government would fund 100 per cent of employment costs for 25 hours each week under the scheme. This amount includes the employee’s income at the minimum wage applicable to their age, as well as National Insurance and pension contributions.

Thousands of employers in the commercial, public, and non-profit sectors, including you, have already applied for financing, which will cover:

• For a total of six months, the connected employer will pay 100% of the National Minimum Wage (or the National Living Wage, depending on the participant’s age)

• Contributions to the National Insurance Fund

• Minimum payments to a pension plan under automatic enrolment a £1,500 subsidy per job to cover startup costs and provide employability assistance.

Who is eligible?

The Kickstart Scheme is open to people between the ages of 16 and 24 who are currently claiming Universal Credit. Also, those who are in danger of long-term unemployment and who meet the eligibility criteria.

How does it work?

Following the conclusion of the grant agreement, the DWP begins the process of hiring additional workers. Employers will be required to provide job descriptions, which will be shared with the DWP and used by work coaches at JobCentre plus. The work coaches will identify applicants for the job and then choose prospects for interviews. 

Employers will have the option of conducting interviews with all applicants identified during the initial identification phase. The company will select the chosen candidate following the interview procedure. 

The government will cover 100 percent of the minimum wage for these workers, up to a maximum of 25 hours a week. They’ll also cover your national insurance premiums and any pension contributions you make. If this is the case, your employer may be able to compensate you.

A-level results day on 10 August 2021 showed private schools experience a significant increase in A* marks. The inequality gap between private schools and public schools is widening, A-level results day showed. 

In England, 70% of A-level grades for independent school students were A* or A. Whilst compared to 39% for comprehensive school students. The attainment gap with non-selective state schools grew even as others saw their grades rise.

In comparison with comprehensive secondary schools, today’s A grades growth in private schools is 50% and doubles that of pupils in sixth form schools. Statistics show downgrades disproportionately affect students from disadvantaged backgrounds revealing a growing inequality in education.

JCQ has published A-level results for summer 2021. Overall A level outcomes are higher at the top grades (A* to B) compared to 2020, and relatively stable at the lower grades (C to E.)

An examination of Ofqual’s statistics shows a more alarming picture of persistent and growing inequity in the educational system. The rise in achievement is not consistent across all demographics or educational environments. A large increase in A grades was seen in independent schools. While grades improved in all types of schools, fee-paying institutions showed the greatest improvement.

In response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the government stated in January 2021 that students studying Ofqual-regulated GCSE, AS, and A-level will be graded based on teacher assed grades. The conclusion of joint consultation between Ofqual and the Department for Education on alternative arrangements to summer examinations was revealed in February. Teachers utilised a variety of data to decide the grade at which their pupils performed.

Institutional inequality

Is it right that your A-level grades may be influenced by where you live, your background, and the school you attend?

The achievement gap for some groups of pupils expanded. While the number of BAME students, those on free school meals, and those from low-income regions obtaining the top grades improved, it was outpaced by their peers’ performance. The attainment gap has increased. 

With regard to grades A or A*, in comparison with the relevant reference groups, there has been an increase of 1.43, 1,.2 and 1.39 percentage points amongst candidates from BAME comunities, free school meals candidates and those with an extremely high deprivation rate.

Many blame the government’s policies, a chaotic last-minute system and no ‘Plan B’ in place causing the gap between private schools and state schools to get bigger.

A level relative and absolute changes by centre type compared to 2020 

Results have increased from 2020 for all types of institutions. The distribution of grades for students attending independent schools are centred around the top grades in typical years. Students attending independent schools in the upper grades are most likely to gain from a consistent increase in grades granted across all types of schools and colleges. Increased grades may have a smaller impact on other centre types because most of their applicants are grouped at the lower end of the grade range.
