Benslow Music is a charitable organization that encourages musicians of all ages and abilities to explore and express their creativity through music. Regardless of your preferred music genre, be it classical, jazz, pop, or folk, they offer day, residential or online music courses tailored to your interests. Throughout the year, they organise a variety of concerts, talks, and events across multiple genres, including classical, early, folk, and jazz. Benslow Music’s facilities, which include designated rehearsal and practice rooms, including two halls suitable for larger ensembles, are available for private hire in part or in their entirety.
Their History
The first Rural Music School (RMS) was established in Hitchin in 1929 by Mary Ibberson to provide teaching for beginners and those wanting to continue musical involvement after their school years. The Benslow Music Trust was established in 1986 ‘to promote music education for social benefit through the study and practice of music, especially in its social and co-operative forms, amongst students of all ages’.
The Instrument Loan Scheme was brought to Benslow Music Trust and set up to provide quality musical instruments, mainly string, on loan to students up to the age of 25. Thanks to the donations of Members, participants and other well-wishers, Benslow Music is well-placed for resumption, continued evolution and diversification to reach new audiences in each area of activity.
Plans for the future include the development of new creative music activities for all ages, further collaboration/partnership working and development of their site facilities and accommodation as they look towards their centenary celebrations in 2029.
Member benefits include:
Early booking access to their courses, four weeks before they open for non-members
Free use of their extensive Music Library
The chance to book practice space for free before the course begins (subject to availability).
At their heart is a passion for sharing the love of music for all ages in a fun and supportive community environment. They invite you to be part of their community!
